Would like to buy a high-end @ 19" to 21" flat screen monitor.

Has anyone here seen new reviews on the best flat-screens available now? Let me know which flat screen monitor you would purchase with a grand or so available...

Appreciate any input... thx

ps... wife has turned me loose with the $ because we just decided NOT to get the High-Def CRT Sony TV w/ HD receiver ( $3,400. )

The best monitor around $1000 is probably Samsung 213T with 21.3" screen. 1600x1200. resolution. It's simply beautiful and about $1200. Dell's 2001FP is also very nice with 20" and 16ms reponse time, best price around $750. If you go for 19", try Dell's 1901FP, deals can be found around $500 or less with dell coupon.

I personally has the 1901FP and is very happy with it, some ppl insist on 16ms response time, but the 25ms for 1901 is fine for casual 3D gaming.

Thx /

What kind of response time would we need for fast-action gaming in order to avoid any bad screen effects?

I've heard mixed answers from reading of long debates, but I'm sure some of the more technically savvy ppl here will give you a more comprehensive response. Personally I haven't notice any ghost effect playing Jedi Academy on my 1901FP, although I'm not a hardcore FPS gamer.

If you want a no brainer, just go for Dell 2001FP, it has 16ms response time and a 1600x1200 resolution. For alternatives, check out the top of the line Samsung 213T or bargain shopping for Dell 1901FP.

the biggest problem for gameing with lcd monitors today is the fact that it looks like crap on anything but its native resolution, and even with the fastest cards not all games will run at a respectable rate at 1600x1200.

In some cases this is true, but not always. My 192t has a native of 1280x1024. Some games don't support that and I have to run them in 1280x960 or something similiar. They all looked fine. The one game that has looked not so great is Hearts of Iron. Its ony res is 800x600. But other then that one I have not had any trouble running non native resolution games. I have also had no trouble with ghosting on it.

If you want CRT, I would recommend Sony G520P or NEC/Mitsubishi FP2141SB. I own the Sony but have heard good things about Nec/Mitsu.

If you want LCD, I would recommend Dell 2001FP or Samsung 213T. Get the Dell if you game as it has 16ms response time. If you're not a big gamer, then Samsung might be slightly better as it doesn't have the graininess of Dell LCD.

Just remember, if you want to play games with your LCD, you better have the video card to drive it at it's native resolution. I have a 9700 Pro driving my 18" Dell LCD, which works fine for now. If you get one of those that is native at 1600x1200, get ready to shell out more a lot more bling.

Just trying to put the whole thing in perspective since you mentioned gaming and did not mention what video card you currently have.

Food for thought....

Dell 2001FP scales pretty decently at its non native resolution like 1024x768 for games. You don't need 9800 Pro or card like that since even those card can't really run games at 1600 x 1200 all that well.

Games do look fantastic at its native 1600 x 1200. But like I said games at its non native resolution doesn't look all that bad. When you factor in how much superior its text clarity and sharpness is when used for web surfing and general use, it's a minor tradeoff. Hopefully next gen cards will be powerful enough to run games at 1600 x 1200. That's what I'm hoping for.

I play my games on my Sony CRT and do most of the web browsing and work on the Dell LCD. This way I get the best of both. Dual monitors rock!

If you decide to go with the Dell, then you should know it is a crap shoot right now with those panels. There have been numerous reports of quality control problems and things that I would not want to deal with for $900. If I'm spending that, or more it had better be perfect no question about it.

I bought the 213T and it is fantastic. I have been gaming with it all vacation. Most games show no ghosting at all, and only some slight ghosting on some games. For text clarity, a flat panel simply cannot be beat. I've owned the G520P, the E540, the FP2141-SB and numerous high end Viewsonics. I am used to high end CRTs and NONE of those can compare to this 213T. It is simply the best monitor I've ever owned. I bought mine for $1199.00 at Best Buy and right now they have a $100 rebate on it. I got mine back in 6 weeks.

Thx for all the replies guys...

Think it will be the Dell 2001FP, but I'm concerned with the quality control problem one of you mentioned...more so an issue w/ the Dell than the Samsung?

Looking at the ATI Radeon Pro AIW 128mb(with DVI connector) to replace my current GeForce 4-4400 to get some TV in while computing...what about that idea?

Brian

9600 or 9800 AIW? I assume it's 9800 PRO AIW since you are upgrading from GeForce 4 4400. The only concern for a top of the line card is the price, if you can affort the card, there is no problem with the idea.

Or, should I just get a tv tuner card?

I have the 9800Pro AIW hooked up to my 192t. Its great. Though I haven't really messed around with the TV stuff on it yet. But its an easy all in one way to go. There is some merit going seperate, such as being able to upgrade your video card independantly of your TV tuner. But that doesn't really bother me. When I feel the need to upgrade I'll just get another AIW type card or if the vid card I want at the time doesn't have that option then I would get that plus a stand alone tuner. For some the ability to upgrade one and leave the other alone is a big deal. Its not for me.

How is the card getting the tv signal? Need an antenna...or...?

Yes. At least as far as the AIW goes. It has a number of different input types. You can hook up a VCR or pretty much whatever you want to it.
