Ok... big question:
,
What the heck is going on. Error code indicates lack of resources (ram issue)

STOP:0x0000008E (0xc000005, 0x8062BFBF, 0xf85d499c, 0x00000000)

System works fine in safe mode. I ran a number of antiv-virus and caught a "few"
(This is a brother in laws system who doesn't bother with the anti-virus/windows updates... kids run limewire and download everything in sight). Ran spybotS&D... caught some except for a DSO Exploit, which it seems to catch, but never can remove the registry keys.

Anyway,

I've swapped ram and am not overclocking or anything. Hardware seems fine from the fact that safe mode works great... But I can't stay in windows more than 5 seconds before it all crashes. Am I right? Am I looking for the virus/spyware/etc that's the problem... or could it be hardware too?

Edit: Ok... I tried to do a repair install and that totally bombed. The system gives a lsass.exe not found error and crashes OR if that is ignored the install crashes anyway due to insufficent resources (ie. /386.exe crashes).

So... I'm starting to think this entire system is fuxored. I'm currently trying ANOTHER windxp install on a fresh hard-drive... which since it couldn't be infected will "prove" it is a hardware issue.

Edit2: The second hard-drive is going fine. So... this is DEFINITELY not hardware related. Prob the SASSER worm?!? I ran Anti-Vir and it did not catch it. But, now that I have the new hard-drive, I can slave the infected one and run all sorts of evil patchs/anti-virus/etc.

Edit3: They system was set up for auto-updates... but it does not seem to have ever been updated (otherwise it wouldn't be crashing like this). So go figure.

The STOP part of the error code does not help diagnose the problem very well. There was a few-word description that came with the STOP code that would better describe what the problem is. See if you can remember this error description or make note of it should it happen again. Then search for "support microsoft <errorcode>" to find the support.microsoft help page for that error.

Here is what is needed:
  1. Remove the viruses and spyware.
  2. Determine the cause of the blue screen error.
  3. setup Automatic Updates to occur automatically.

To remove the viruses and spyware you will need to install or update a virus scanner. There are two people very knowledgeable in this area who can help you, mechBgon and FlyingPenguin. Read through the following short thread to see mechBgon's advice for removing viruses from a contaminated system.
help me!!!

It is important to scan for both viruses and spyware in Safe Mode to remove the possibility of a running process from locking an infected file.

Once the viruses are removed, read through the following two threads.
Microsoft's Anti-Spyware will also be useful.
