0x0000007b errors - inacessable boot device

Hi,
This issue is killing me!!!
Everytime I use windows update, or sometimes when I just install regualr programs, I get a blue screen at my next boot up with the 0x0000007b - inacessable boot device error.

I've tried the Microsoft Knowledge base but they only have scenarios that involve upgrading or installing service packs.

I have Windows 2000 SP4. The only way I can fix this when it happens is to go to the recovery console, run chkdsk and then once windows is back up again run scandisk on the boot volume.

THIS SUCKS!

Any ideas? 😕

Are you using an External drive (i.e. Zip, USB, CDRom, etc)?
Any SCSI devices? RAID?

If so, all it make take is to install the latest driver(s) or reinstall
the old ones. (if prompted about older files, just overwrite the newer)

If the only problem you are having is Windows Update, then I would
leave well enough alone.

Welcome to the Nightmare World that is Win2k SP4.

Thanks for the reply,

No external drives SCSI devices. No RAID. Just a plain old sinlge IDE drive.

It's not only windows update that's causing me greif, but also some program installations.

Is this a known SP4 thing? I haven't heard anything about SP4 issues before, I'm probably out of the loop there.
