I'm trying to go with a smart practical car now after my Explorer has been spent way too long in the shop..and wanted something I can buy with just cash.

There are '06-'07 Civics (first year of the current gen) with 100k+ miles that are going for good prices..and as a former Integra owner that had 190k miles on it I know they can last a while, but is there much danger in getting a Civic with that many miles? Anything to look for at that point?

Or anything else I can look for that I can pick up and have it last over the next 10 years?

At what price? Just giving a name and milage tells me nothing. Its like asking should I buy a 2009 Corvette with 30k or a 1987 VW Scirocco with 40k.

Look to see if the car has had its timing chain checked/replaced, and its engine tuned up w/ new spark plugs. That service is due at 100K miles. Also check the clutch if it's a manual; it will probably need to be replaced as well.

As per the usual, inspect tires, brakes, and battery.

Exactly. If you can get one at a reasonable price it will be fine, but often people push up the price because it's a Honda.

given the amount of miles, it will likely be highway driven and therefore be in pretty solid shape if maintenance was up to par

watch the hood for lots of chips due to mass highway use

Agree with Bass
Typical commuter with lots of gentle HW miles with price adjusted accordingly means good value if cared for

I'd drive it a good half-hour to hour to try it out. My daily driver is an 09 Civic, about a year and a half old, but only has 10k Km on it (we live downtown).

However, I have driven a company Civic Hybrid that was an 07-ish with about 80k Km. It was driving fine, but the engine definately sounded stressed even at low speeds. Probably got abused as a shared vehicle, so it could depend on how well it was taken care of.

I purchased my 07 Civic 5 months ago for $9,500. It had 83,000 miles on it and is now up to 97,000. It has some brake issues -- had to get the pads replaced and rotors turned shortly after purchasing it. It then needed an alignment and now I've been told the tires are cupping and should be replaced, which is a real bummer since they're Michelin Hydroedge tires with less than 20,000 miles on them. I'm thinking the rotors need to be replaced since when I brake from high speeds the steering wheel vibrates and the brakes are noisy despite the new pads.

The engine runs great and I consistently get 34-35 mpg during my 1 hour commute to work but the previous owner must have abused the shit out of the brakes.

My wife's '04 Civic still drove like new when she totalled it with 110K miles on it. Of course I thought it drove like crap since new...but it was reliable, cheap, and stood up over time (due to being unbelievably simple). I wouldn't hesitate at the miles as long as the price was reasonable. $7K doesn't seem that reasonable given that you can get a similarly reliable '07 Fusion for about the same price. I'd take Fusion everytime.
