Has anyone else had the issue described in TSB #0654?

PARKING BRAKE:CONVENTIONAL:MECHANICAL:LINKAGE AND CABLE
TSB #0654 -- PARK BRAKE CABLE FREEZING/REAR BRAKES DRAGGING. *AK (NHTSA ID #10019962, JANUARY 01 2006)

I've been experiencing this issue and now it's eaten away most of my rear brake pads (especially the passenger side) and is starting to gouge the rotor. Do any of you know if the dealer will pay to fix this if it's under warranty?

You would hope that if they issued a TSB for the issue it would be a warranty repair or a recall either way it should cost you nothing.

Unhook the cables from the parking brake where they connect at the caliper or drum inside the rotor (can't remem which that year had).....

Have you ever used the e-brake?

If its a TSB, it should all be warrantied, they will warranty the damage if they find it directly related to the TSB.

Yeah it is a common problem, the dealer will fix it. Another common one is a problem with the gas tank where you cant pump gas due to the fact that it come back up the spout.

How did you know when you started having the problem?

I started noticing that my car wouldn't drift down my driveway after releasing the parking brake, so it drags and greatly increases the wear on the pads.

Mine's a manual and I park on a 30 degree angle, so I don't have much choice.

That's what a warranty is. If something fails, it's fixed for free. Of course the dealer will fix it under warranty.

And the dealer doesn't pay. The dealer bills Ford Corporate and Ford Corporate pays. Dealers actually love to do warranty repairs. They are guaranteed to get paid full book price for them.

Now, there's a big question of why you let it go for long enough to start gouging the rotors. You should have fixed the problem immediately. It's possible that the pads and rotors will not be covered because that damage was avoidable if you had acted as soon as you noticed a problem instead of waiting, but you'll need to figure that part out with your dealer. They absolutely will fix the parking brake though.

Why wouldn't you use the parking brake? Hell, I use the parking brake everytime I park my car, even on flat surfaces, and it's an automatic.

Why use the parking brake on an auto?

A stick I can see why, but on an auto that has a parking sprag (sp)?

Also with all e brake cables they begin to swell as they age so they won't release properly, another reason not to use them.

That's ridiculous. I've owned many manual transmission cars, put hundreds of thousands of miles on them, and never had to replace an emergency brake cable. How does a cable swell over time anyway? If anything the cable would bind from lack of use...not from regular usage.

Why not use it? That's what it's there for. I use mine 100% of the time...guess I just got into the habit of using it from all the years I drove a stick. It's not like it is causing any wear to use it. You just have to adjust it every 40-50k miles...no big deal. Hell, most places will do that when you have the brakes done.

i dunno about his auto, but on my old taurus using the parking brake was needed at least every once in a while to keep up the rear drums.

Because the park pin or pawl was not meant to replace the parking brake and not designed to hold the car on a hill.

This is why people who don't use the parking brake sometimes notice that it's a little more difficult to move the shifter out of park. They didn't use the park brake, and the weight of the car is putting pressure on the pin or pawl, making it harder than normal to move it out of park.

I have a 10 year old Z24 with rear drums and a 12 year old Taurus with rear discs. The parking brakes work fine and the cables have yet to "swell" and fail to release.

They fixed it under warranty. They had to replace both rear brake pads/shoes, one caliper, and one rotor. Does anyone know about how much this would cost without a warranty?

From a dealer - well upwards of $500. I wouldn't be surprised to see something close to $1K for all that work.

I'm pretty happy with the service I received. It almost makes me want to buy an extended warranty now, since I've only got about 8000 miles left.

lol

They didn't learn did they? Similar problem in the mid-90's mustangs, parking brake cable would get stuck and either seize up the parking brake or would brake the cable when trying to set it.

Actually funny enough the same thing happened last winter on my 03 Hyundai Elantra, in very cold weather the parking brake never released fully, causing my rear brakes to wear out completely. On a particularly icy day it was completely frozen in the morning rendering my car immobile with the rear brakes locked in the parking lot. I knew I needed to get it replaced, but one day it just broke, junk piece of cable. I won't be surprised if both the cables came from the same parts supplier.
