02 camry, 4cyl automatic. 230k miles. i got it about 12k miles ago and it runs great, but is slow to start now and again.

last week i went to work and back fine, come saturday it wouldnt start. tried to jump it, since i had left the key turned all night for some stupid reason, still no go. no clicking or any sound from the motor.

my dad suggested i put it into drive, then back into park and try again. voila, it started. never seen that before, but its been fine this week so i didnt think about it again.

try to start it at lunch today...no go. not so much as a click or a sound from the engine, again. i put it into gear for the hell of it, but that didnt help this time either

power is there, or so it seems. i hook up the charger we have and it says 70%, so i trickle charge it while i eat lunch, its reads 100% and 12.8 volts...i try to start, and nothing. no sound, no click, no anything.

im thinking the starter is probably the culprit here, but then when i put it into gear last week and it started up once it was back in drive im wondering if it might be something else.

a friend suggested changing the battery, but is that worth it if I have power but nothing is happening with the motor? no idea when the battery was last changed.

I'm by no means an expert on anything in the car world, but just because I had very similar sequences of events...

Check your fuses and your cables. Had a car once that just ceased to do anything after parking it for a few minutes. Couldn't figure it out, had it towed, turned out to be a fuse. Most expensive 50-cent fuse ever, including towing and inspection :/

yeah, i forgot to mention that i checked the fuses earlier. the ignition fuses were fine. i assume the cabling is ok since the accessories have power. windows, lights, wipers, radio...all work fine :-/

Neutral/park safety switch would explain the shifting thing.

Slow to start is weak battery.

Sounds like possibly a combination of things.
