$0.65 holding $20.00 hostage

I went to Sports Authority last week to buy some items my son needed for Little League "Fall Ball". I had some gift cards (from the parents of the basketball teams I recently coached), so I used those. I was exactly $20 short on gift cards, so I paid the rest in cash.

Today, I returned an item from that purchase. I was to receive $20.65. She said she was going to put it on a gift card. I asked for the cash. She said she could not do that because I did not pay that much in cash the 1st time around. I asked for $20 is cash and $0.65 on a gift card - No go. So I asked for $20 in cash and to forgo the $0.65. She says, "Not if I don't want to get fired today."

So I ended up with a gift card for $20.65. There has got to be a better way.

Store policies since there is so much theft involving gift cards and merchandise. It's safer for the store to have the money at least locked back to them if they were scammed.

Them are the rules stores drum into their clerks' heads. Amusing, in a way.

Some years ago I was at Sears to buy luggage; while I was completing the purchase I was told that they were giving a $20 discount for every $100+ of purchase. I saw that my purchase was $201, and she had given me only $20 off. I asked for $20 more, and she was confused. She says the discount was $20 off for every $100+, and $200 is still only $100+, so...

I returned all the 4 pieces of luggage, and then divvied them up into two parts each of around $100, and made her ring them up separately, and got my $40 off. She had only made up more work for herself.

When we were in college, my now-wife had bought a sweatshirt from the Bookstore. The next day, the sweatshirt went on sale. We returned later that day and asked a clerk for a refund of the difference. He refused.

Without hesitation, my wife said, "Fine, I would like to return this sweatshirt and buy it back at the lower price."

The defeated clerk gave up the refund.

I worked retail for many years . . . had to deal with all the stuff you guys were talking about . . some of the computer systems just aren't designed to do it gracefully . . . it's a PITA

go back and ask to speak w/a manager what she did is illegal. They have to return the money in the way it was purchased. I worked retain for 15 years. The manager will swap your $ out. If he refuses tell him you will report to corporate.

Blame it on the people who buy shit on credit and return it for cash and then default on the credit.

It's their fault.

You cant really do that. If you return with receipt, they return it using whatever method of payment you used. i.e. Cash for cash, credit for credit, etc.

If you return without receipt, either they wont take it back or they will give you store credit, but they wont give you cash.

Sears should have had the discount programmed properly in their computer.

Also sometimes the discount is only applied once like $20 off any purchase of $100 or more. In those cases as stupid as it sounds, dividing up your purchase can make for a better discount and the cost of extra time.

Some merchants do refunds in anyway you want except refund to a credit card that wasn't used in the transaction.

However, the other poster was right of the reason's why they don't do this mostly. Asshat would buy a bunch of stuff via credit and then return it for cash and then do a chargeback and claim they never got any cash back.

ya know...MM is my favorite slimeball lawyer but I'm going to have to agree with you on this one. If this is the worst thing he has to complain about, he needs to pet some stray dogs.

Oh, this is nowhere the worst thing I have to complain about - just the most immediate.
