i test drove the elantra today. on a flat rode, acceleration seemed nonexistant for a 2.0 liter engine with 138 hp.

anyone have a link to 0-60 specs of both elantra and the mazda3i? (the mazda is the other car i'm thinking of buying.)

thx

edit: Automatic tranny

It's a fwd car, having something quick and fun is irrelevant if the wrong wheels are powering it.

Most SRT4 owners would disagree...it's not completely irrelevant. :p

i dunno if its above your budget, but you should check out a base mazda3s... The 148hp to 160hp difference was very noticable when i test drove them....

mazda 3s from C&D, 7.4 sec

2002 elentra, 8.5sec

i say they are pretty close, even if the mazda3i comes out to be faster (the 3s is 110lbs heavier than a toyota matrix XRS)

for this sector the main concern is usually the reliability, price, egronomics, and the resale values of the cars, and not performance. if bought new, i say the mazda will hold its value better than the elentra and probably have better interiors as well. i'd save the money and shop for a used elentra.

oh btw they are both faster than lots of econo-box already.

he's asking about the mazda 3i. it has a totally different, weaker engine. look at the speeds posted off of msn autos in my post. they are both around the same speed.

where did you get that info from?

also, the elantra has a I4 2.0 138 hp engine. why does the mazda3i's 2.0 148hp engine not have a better 0-60 speed?

he said msn auto. even with the 10 extra horses, you won't notice much of a difference, especially i think the mazda3 is heavier.

Different weights
Different gearing
Different transmission behavior
Different drivers
Different tracks (probably)
Different weather conditions

Either way, more HP != faster all the time.

the elantra (after rebates) will be $5k less than the mazda3i. (11k vs 16k)

the elantra will have to depreciate twice as fast as the mazda3i to make up that $5k difference.

reliability: mazda has a 4yr/50k mile warrenty, elantra has 5yr/60k. as long as repairs are free, it doesnt matter, right?

you'd be surprised that a lot of repairs aren't covered under the warranty.

if you have to buy the mazda at full MSRP, i'd get the elentra. test drive both cars and see which one you like better. spec-wise they are mostly identical. i love the elantra GT tho!
