Our University has a Formula SAE team where they basically build a 450lb car with a 600cc engine from the Honda CBR600 with a 6-spd sequential tranny. They design and fabricate the suspension, chassis, intake, exhaust, fuel timing and ignition...pretty much everything but the engine-internals and tranny. They even converted the engine to fuel injection.

Many universities around the world have this team and they compete in events. One event was in England, while most are in the US. I saw the car perform on a small auto-x course...and wow! You should see it go..its crazy!

I suggest all of you to join the team if your University has it...I'm sure most do. Its a great experience and I can't wait till I get to participate!

The link for our University is : Formula SAE at University of Toronto

I wanted to join SAE at UB (Buffalo) but I dropped out of Engineering altogether. I think my whole floor at my dorm back in '95 dropped out... it was a lot of work for incoming freshmen to handle. I dropped out for other reasons.

Our university has these too, Automobile magazine said that Western Washington University is the #1 school for automobile design. They always make these and the goverment constantly gives them several million dollar grants to make a certain car. Anyways I remeber asking a guy who was making these about the engine. They had a mini 8cyl engine that totaled a little more then .5 leter! The made it all themselves and everthing else (except tranny like the guy above said) I'll be help building and driving these soon enough!
