¿Do I have to play the "firsts"?

Hi guys :)

In a couple of days I'll be getting a new graphic card. Looking at this generation games I was wondering if it's really worth it to play the "first ones".

I'm a casual gamer, nothing extreme. The ones I would really want to play are Borderlands, Dirt, FIFA. In a second place, this ones caught my attention: Assassins Creed, Batman, Crysis, Formula 1, Battlefield.

Borderlands: I asked around and I was told that I don't have to play the first one. The second is like the first but way better in every aspect (not to throw rubbish to the first one, it's a great game).

Assassins Creed: I've played half the campaign of the first one but I left it because it was geting pretty boring, same mission over and over again. Do I go straight to the 2?

Batman: No idea here. What do you guys say? Do I play arkham asylum or go directly to arkham city?

Crysis: Same as Batman.

Of course, there are a few that I'll go for the latest, like FIFA, Dirt or Formula 1. But about the other ones, What do you think?

I'm playing Borderlands 2 now. You don't have to play BL 1 first, but it's still a lot of fun as a solo game and the maps, powers and guns are different. Get a version with all of the DLC.

Also, you'll enjoy the story and humor a bit more if you play BL1 first, since it introduces many of the characters. If you jump straight into BL2 you won't get why you should care about some characters showing up since you'll be missing their history.

Yes, 2 is much better than 1.

Arkham Asylum is a very fun game, I recommend playing it first.

I had more fun with Battlefield 1942 than with Battlefield Vietnam or Battlefield 2.

I didn't purchase Battlefield 3 and I'm not planning on it.

Also, Call of Duty was better than any of the sequels I've played of it. (Still my favorite single player campaign of any FPS since perhaps Doom)

Don't bother. Nothing better in the first one that you aren't already getting in a better form in the 2nd.

Assassins Creed: I've played half the campaign of the first one but I left it because it was geting pretty boring, same mission over and over again. Do I go straight to the 2?

HELL no... first one was quite bad in comparison. Just look up a plot guide online to get the gist of what happened. Or view the gameplay vids.

Batman: No idea here. What do you guys say? Do I play arkham asylum or go directly to arkham city?

Yes, play AA first. It's still a good game and you get a better sense of progression between one game and the other.

Crysis: Same as Batman.

IMO, try both but not necessarily in order. Crysis 1 and 2 are pretty different and stand on their own. There's not much of a story continuation so there's not much of a reason to go 1 then 2.

Of course, there are a few that I'll go for the latest, like FIFA, Dirt or Formula 1. But about the other ones, What do you think?

Well if a game is heavily story-driven, yes. If not, then no.

So... Borderlands for example? Don't bother with the first one now that the second one is out, since Borderlands' "story" (if you really want to call it that) is irrelevant, and Borderlands 2 is better than the original from what I've read and seen so far. If you'd talk about... say... Mass Effect? Then yes, absolutely play the first one (in fact as far as Mass Effect goes the first one is necessary, since the two others are pretty much alternate universe material written by another author).

To reiterate:

Story-driven game? Yes play the first ones.
Action-driven game without much or nothing of an actual story? No.

But... I guess that's just me. Someone out there is bound to tell you that you should really play the first Call of Duty before playing Modern Warfare 3.

Assassin's Creed: Skip 1, play 2, if you like 2, play Brotherhood and Redemption in order. The story of 1 is meaningless to understanding 2; I played through half of number 1, gave up because it was repetitive and boring (great concept not withstanding), and absolutely loved #2. Brotherhood and Redemption feel more like expansions, but they're worth it if you like 2.

Crysis: Play Crysis 1 and Warhead. They're good, they still look incredible and they're pretty cheap now. I haven't actually played Crysis 2, but I've heard a lot of "love it or hate it" sentimentality.

Batman: I skipped Arkham Asylum and don't feel like I missed out storywise, but it might help you out. I haven't honestly gotten that far in Arkham City, but I like what I've played so far.

Borderlands: Haven't played 2 yet, but there was really just kind of a paper thin plot to the first one, and the ending sucked so incredibly bad... And based on the little bits of plot there was, not really sure how much 2 could really have in common with 1, though the Tannis recordings in 1 are definitely funny enough to play the game on their own. Where she talks about watching other people in her party die, and realizing she doesn't care, and then the deal she makes with some guy involving her underwear.

Assassin's Creed: Only played the first two, and while I'd say you don't HAVE to play the first one, it'd be a good idea.

Batman: You don't have to, but it wouldn't be a bad idea. Mostly because of Mark Hamill doing the voice of the Joker and the Joker being the main villain of the game. It'll be a sad day when that guy dies and can't do any more Batman games/cartoons. They also got the person who did the voice of Harley in the old Batman TAS with Hamill, so bonus points for that too. Makes it easy to overlook some of the weaker points. Arkham City was the better overall game IMO, but Arkham Asylum was still a very solid game.

Crysis: Only played part of 1, then got lost, bored, and gave up, but from what I understand Crysis 2 is kind of a parallel story taking place at the same time as 1. Sort of like the old Half-Life expansions Blue Shift and whatever the other one was.
