My experiment with uBlock 0.8.8.2 is over. While I am impressed with the ad blocking performance, I've had system problems. I noticed at times that my fan would be running, while only reading an online newspaper. Then I started getting pop-ups from Nortons informing me of high cpu usage. One of the cpu's hit 100%. The laptop has been running hotter since I enabled uBlock.

After the laptop was on for 4 hours today, it started all over. So I have disabled uBlock. I'm back with ABP. Maybe in the future I'll try again, but for now I don't need the "heat". If the problem continues, then the timing of installing uBlock was a coincidence.

update: I noticed the firefox is using 60% less memory, than when I had uBlock enabled. Firefox is running at over 200k with ABP, compared to over 500K using uBlock. Logged only into this website, cpu usage is at 0-2%.

I lost faith in uBlock as it doesn't block all ads. I`ll take ABP with high memory usage thank you.

Weird. I haven't seen anything like that at all. All my machines are running as expected, and slightly faster with µBlock. I only notice the speed increase on some sites; reddit in particular, but definitely no slowdowns, and not a single ad anywhere.

Can you post a website it doesn't block? Wouldn't it just be a matter of adding it to the blocklist? I haven't noticed this yet, but I normally don't visit sketchy websites.

This has been my experience as well. I'm still on 0.8.8.0 though.

I guess different strokes for different folks. I did notice a reduction of ads with uBlocker. I didn't even look to see if there were any. My reason for trying uBlock wasn't that I was dissatisfied with ABP, but I read the glowing reports of lower memory usage.

I don't mind if I see plain vanilla unobtrusive ads. It's the distracting ones with some moving video and/or audibles that annoy me. How anyone can read text while video is playing adjacent to the text is beyond me. Maybe I'm OCD or ADD or ADHD or something. But no ads is not really a criteria for me. Sorry I don't mean to be ranting. Just kind of surprised at some of the comments I am reading. If not for the high cpu and memory usage problems I experienced, unlike what others reported, I would have continued with uBlock.

Those are definitely the kind of ads that made me want to check out an ad-blocker as well. Not only are they intrusive, but they also tax my CPU and take up unnecessary bandwidth. I'm not sure if an adblock solves the bandwidth problem with these video/animated ads or not though. I don't mind the "static" picture ones either, unless they mess up the webpage layout somehow.

Hmm, I've tested uBlock under Windows 7, 8.1 and Linux Mint, on FF and Chrome. I've not run into anything like what you described. This isn't about different strokes for different folks. Its not like I'm stroking myself the right way to not have the same experience you are having, nor you stroking yourself to have the kind of experience you are having.

But you are the first to relate this (AFAIK) so I will be happy at having similar experiences with those stroking like me. Throbbing along ...

That is totally unacceptable.

I didn't have ANY ads with Adblock Plus and I don't have ANY ads with uBlock. I'm using uBlock because it's lighter and I might as well. But doesn't really make much of a difference to me, to be honest.

The best feature about ABE (or ABP for that matter) is the Element Hiding Helper which allows me to select custom site elements to block.

It is my understanding this doesn't work as great with uBlock?

Imo, µBlock's element hider is more cumbersome than ABPs. It works though. It isn't something I use heavily, so it hasn't bothered me.

If they both use the same filter lists they should behave exactly the same. If you can provide an example where this is not the case then it should be reported as a bug.

My experience has been that Ublock blocks more; I was using APB and some adds remained on sites I frequent, but did not bother me. However Ublock removes most everything on those same sites.

I kind of feel guilty using it.

It seems like 2 of the main contributor just left the project :(

Gorhill the main developer seems like he just got tired of it
The more you give, the more many act as if you owed them even more. This is what ground me down in the long run. If the project has any intrinsic value, it will survive. The move was a huge relief for me. I have been postponing this for long now, thinking things might improve. They did not, from my point of view.

The main github page for uBlock should now be considered this one[1]. Ownership was transferred from the gorhill one to here. I would expect it to still be maintained so I don't think there's anything to worry about. I don't know how this affects the AMO stuff.

What was shocking was that last night I opened Chrome in Incognito mode (only mode of Chrome I use) and found uBlock missing. Went into the Extensions screen and sure enough it was no longer there. Chrome somehow removed it without warning or notification. I went out to Github and got it anew but the intial use still was finding ads to pop through on videos on YouTube. After a couple of minutes, though, they went away. Haven't tried this morning, yet.

ublock prompted me to update today because it required additional permissions. haven't done so yet as i'm waiting for feedback from those that updated.

Note: Chrome users will notice that an extra permission is now asked for by uBlock (modifying privacy-related settings). The reason uBlock has that new permission is that it needs to modify the "Network Prediction" settings (which Chrome has enabled by default) in order to ensure more reliable blocking (there was an issue with Chrome "sneaking" certain requests so uBlock couldn't process them).

While uBlock modifies the network prediction setting (without reading its previous value) to ensure all requests are filtered correctly, uBlock never reads or modifies any of your other settings. Your uBlock preferences never leave your computer. We never see any of your data.

A previous version I had was signed but ublock origin 0.9.8.2 is not for some reason. I think they will fix that in the next few versions though.

After updating uBlock about a week or so ago, it started blocking my messages here at AnandTech.

I don't like ads, but uBlock might be too much. If there is an ad before a video, which is pretty much all of them; not only the ad is blocked, but the entire video. Not sure how to customize all those third party filters other than to not use them, but at this point, disabling uBlock is becoming a regular thing on many websites.
