So I've had my BB unit for 3 years and as a model it's probably closer to 5YO. So for the last 6 months or so I've been window shopping for a replacement.

For the love of god you idiots we don't need a fucking camera on every tom dick and harry thing you can put through the factory door.

I'm not in a NSA style job where your phone stays in the car, but I am, like millions of others, at a place where personal cameras are prohibited.

I now have a wifi spot in my house so I'm interested in seeing what you can do with wifi. You see, I wouldn't mind spending some money on a new device; it's just you retards think that tacking on some crappy PAS capability you will enthrall a legion of new users while I could get better results from a credit card sized sub $100 digicam.

The talk about the palm pre had me go check it out, and all was good till about the 5th line on the tech specs where I get to the "
Camera" portion. Do me a favor and shoot yourself.

You should talk to your provider. They may not advertise that some of these phones may be available without a camera. You can't be the first person to have this issue.

If you are a brave person and are willing to really open up your phone, many of these phones actually have modular cameras that you can simply detach and remove. Bad news is, this might not matter to security. You'll want to ask them first.

I agree with your general rant, though, that I would generally prefer it if business-oriented smartphones (eg, WinMo, BB, etc.) would leave off the cameras.

i use my camera more for work than i do for personal use on my omnia. same with the phone i had before this. i cant imagine having a job that was that restrictive, even tho i understand the need for it. i would just have to be one of the people with the clearance to carry one hehe.

most useless thing ever. macboys went nuts when iphone 3gs announced they had a video camera. ITS SHITE@

i have a panasonic lumix and your cell phone camera with a lens the size of a pinhole wont touch it

month back i was on macchu picchu in one of the most beautiful places in the world. an old lady was out there snapping pictures with a fucking motorola razr. first, she wasnt poor, because if youre south american and you can can afford a mobile phone, you sure as hell can afford a digicam. now, what happens to pictures taken on cell phones? NOTHING. because they look like shit, and more likely than not she wouldnt know how to extract them.

Yeah the 8830 has no camera but like DivideByZero said, it's OLD. It has barely any memory for apps. I'm sure whatever phone they replace the 8830 with will have a camera-less option.

I've got the 8830 because I can't have a camera at work. It actually kind of blows. It really sucks when you're phone shopping and you limit the list to phones without cameras and find two options... The shittiest phone ever conceived and the most expensive BB offered. Like I'm going to use the 'world edition' functionality. Argh.

It's a lot more common than you think. Hell many call centers prohibit them, not exactly a position that requires security clearance for a $10 an hour worker. But they places still have lots a proprietary software and major security issues.

Pretty much the two that really ever offered phones with and without cameras were RIM and HP. HP is pretty much out of the game and RIM has pretty much stopped the practice. Sucks.

I'm trying to work something out with HR to get clearance for a camera phone. I work at a manufacturing plant which is the primary reason they don't want us having cameras. Too much potential for people to 'steal' images of prototype 'items' the public should not see yet. I don't work in production though so it's not like I'm ever near the potential breach areas anyway.

Blackberry has quite a few of their models avalible without cameras, though you often have to have your provider order it that way. There are quite a few new BBs comming out in the comming months, including the Tour 9630, the replacement for the 8830. Much better screen, alot more memory, and quad band GSM/Edge, UTMS on 2100mhz, and dual band CDMA EVDO Rev A.

Really? I've not heard of them and I know people in RIM. The only devices I know of are the old ones, which are still made, such as the 8700 series. Anything from the original 8100 (bar 88xx) and on are all cam'd up.

The minority lose out and you are unfortunately in the minority so as a consequence most manufacturers don't give a sh!t :(

I'd gladly pay an extra £100 for a remote stick on the iphone for music like I did have on my Sony MiniDiscs but sadly no one seems to want to use one so I can't buy one.

it's not exactly small numbers. my company has an employee total somewhere north of 100,000. no camera phones for us. on any military installation, no cameras; that would be north of 7 digits. many government agencies, no cameras. many tech companies, similar to mine, no cameras.

and it is affecting where corporate $$$ go to. for those in mine with company phones the main provider was switched last year and I beleieve in part because the previous vendor had a lack of non-camera models available.
