Is the name Hero-U definitive? Because it sounds pretty bad, impersonal, dull...

The whole idea of bringing back the good ol' rpg/adventure mix is great. I have longed to play another Quest for Glory-like game for a long time. QfG is one of my favourite series that I used to play dozen of times (especially the first and fourth game).

Hmm, looking back, they both have similar European settings. I wonder if that's the case of the new game. I read the kickstarter article, where they wrote that the new game takes place near Silmaria (land from QfG5) which is based on ancient Greece., but the concept art looks more like QFG1.

Yeah I think so. the full name is Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption , so I like that better.

Hope you ended up supporting the project. The new game is set on this island Marete, which is where Silmaria is but the place does look a bit different than the other games of the QFG series.

By the way if you check out the main page now they have updated the video with new art and there is more info on the main KS site. Looks much better now IMO!

Already backed, upped my contribution, and preordered the next game. I loved the QFG series and have high hopes for this one.

The entire series is available at GOG for $9.99.

I'm fairly certain I still have the original CDs (1 CD for QFG 1-4, and 2 for 5) around here somewhere from the anthology, but I may very well buy this just to have a nice tight digital package. Will I ever replay it? I don't know, but there's just something I enjoy about archiving these gems.

I have all the original games as well but i got the collection from GOG as well because they are optimized to run on modern systems. (DOSbox is included and automatically configured)

Not sure if the originals will work on Win7..

I've been convinced.

I was a big adventure game fan in the 90s. Kings Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Gabriel Knight, Blade Runner... those were good times. In recent years I tried to play some old school adventure games, both classic ones and newer 3D ones, but I just couldn't get into them anymore. I wonder what direction this genre need to go in order to be relevant again.

One thing's for sure - adventures won't be mainstream anymore. It seems that the only way to sell adventure to mainstream players is to take out the adventuring/puzzle parts and make it more dynamic - like Quantic Dream do with their games Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) or Heavy Rain. I think that the main problem lies in the slow pace of adventure games in contrast with the "needs" of modern "audience" who like more dynamic, movie-like experiences.

What I don't like about this trend is the fact that all genres are moving in this direction, killing off the diversity and impairing basic genre characteristics.

Anyway there is still some new good stuff among classic adventures like Jane Jensen's latest game Gray Matter or retrolooking indie adventures like Gemini Rue.

Getting down to the wire now! I hope everyone who is interested doesn't miss this and hopefully donates!!!

mooncancook - Interesting perspective of adventure games.. I too am not into them as much as I used to be. Hell, I don't have a chance to do that much gaming these days either but I think that a great story and a feeling that what you're doing "matters" and entertaining gameplay and characters would do it for me. I love the Monkey Island series also for example.

Joethelion -
Yes I agree with you about adventures not being mainstream anymore. With everything that's come out in the last decade, people have grown to like different things and the slow pace is definitely a part of it. One reason I really hope this project is successful because it is pretty unique and these days that is getting more and more difficult to find.

Wow! Glad I ran across this before it ended. Here's to hoping that the next 63 hours brings in the needed dough.

that's great brownstone!
Yes it is nearing the final countdown.. last full day! Everyone who is on the fence should jump on this, even if it's for a small amount because they still have not reached their goal.

The game has a completely revamped website now with new artwork, and much more!

Good News Everyone!

They have decided to change the engine and make the look of the game more isometric, which will be an improvement!

Also, they set up their official forum so those interested can discuss things in more detail

Good news is that the game is progressing well with the new engine and they have a new website and demos to check out! I think it is a lot better than what they started out with.

Unfortunately they still need to raise more $ so they're doing an additional campaign.
They had some devs. leave the project, completely changed their engine and switched to 3D which definitely affected the budget. It is all explained in this post if anyone is interested -

IMO, this is bad, very bad.
These people aren't new to the game, they have done many games.
There is no excuse for basically flushing their first successful kickstarter of $409,150, down the tubes, and now, begging for more $$$ because of some really bad decisions.
It gives other kickstarter projects a bad rep as well.

It's been a few months now that this game has been released after many delays and I think it was a good thing that they didn't rush and release something that was not ready. I've played about 1/4 of it so far I believe. I think it is very fun and it has many of the elements of the Quest for Glory series, without feeling like it is just another sequel. The combat is turn based, different than any of the older games but it works well. I like the graphics and animation a lot, and all of the little details and descriptions and humor are certainly highlights.

They've had 4 patches so far and a 5th one is coming up from what I just read.
If anyone is on the fence, I think that it's well worth checking out for $20. I agree that the way the project was managed financially was not ideal, but it is good that they ended up with a finished product that is better than I expected.
As I have time here and there I plan on finishing the game. They are currently working on early stages of the sequel.

If anyone is interested here are some more in depth reviews:

Hm, I might check this one out further down the road, my backlog is too stacked to even consider it right now.

Yes it was almost 7 years, pretty crazy - the release date was July 2018!!
Also, the game kickstarted by the Space Quest creators is not finished yet, I think it has been even longer than 7 years!!

@nakedfrog - I hear you - my backlog is pretty big as well but I just decided to start that one first since I had been looking forward to it so much. I really hope that more people pick it up so they have enough resources to make the sequel. They are planning to make 5 games with different characters/classes as the main character if all goes well...
