‘digital hoarding’ as a new type of hoarding disorder.

I did this for a long time, not wanting to delete movies and music I had downloaded and buying more hard drives. These days I don't download though so my hoarding has dropped significantly.

I'm not that bad, but content I might want to access again doesn't get deleted. Most is small potatoes, but some movies and lots of photos. I also video edit so some projects and source content stay around. That's why in this build I went for 9TB capacity in my RAID 5 and I backup at least weekly.

Downloading (or re-downloading) is also a lot less work, and companies like GoG didn't exist before, so it was hard(er) to "go legit."

If I want it, I keep it. Downloading over and over is a waste of resources. Also, if you don't control the server, there's no guarantee the file you want will be there(and accessible) tomorrow.

True. And I have storage space for that.

But I don't keep around things I don't like "just in case" because I don't want to have to download them again. Anymore.

My main file server.
Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md0 5.4T 4.7T 447G 92% /volumes/raid1
/dev/md1 6.3T 4.8T 1.3T 80% /volumes/raid2
/dev/md3 7.2T 994G 5.9T 15% /volumes/raid3

I'm not sure if I qualify as a hoarder though but I do have tendency of downloading stuff I might not even look at. I just like having stuff local as you can't trust it will always be on the internet.

I find disk space is cheap, so I usually prefer to just add more hard drive and grow raid arrays instead of deleting stuff. Though every now and then I do go through and do a cleanup. Like when I retire a VM or something I tend to keep the old one around for a while just in case or if I take a backup of a project or other data I keep that backup around longer than I need etc. I typically rename stuff to .del and months later I go through and look for any .del folders and delete them.

My weakness is desktop wallpapers. I have more than I could ever use. I sometimes go through them and delete a couple, but I still have tons. Sometimes it's just so I have access to a portion of the picture, to crop, and use it for something else.

Edit:
Oh, and fonts. I have tons. Most aren't that great for general use, but for the right application, I like to have choice.

I don't have nearly as much as I used to but I do have a lot of computer related parts sitting around. Digital hoarding IMO is MUCH better than hoarding physical items. A lot less space taken up when the kids have to come and clean out the house.

I'm not as much of a hoarder, but I still do a bit. Just filling up my first 1TB drive right now, and recently bought a new computer with a 3TB drive. I don't watch movies so I think that's the main reason why mine fills up slower. No interest in lossless music either (unless I'm making archival rips of rare stuff I own).

I've been guilty of this to some extent. Hard drives are relatively cheap, but I have no desire to fill the garage with them or have a dozen 42U racks worth of storage servers in my basement. I know that gives many geeks the biggest hard-on imaginable, but I'll pass.

I have a single tower server that has a capacity of 15 drives. Recently I decided that I will not buy any more hard drives or upgrade the capacity of the existing drives. One day last week I took a couple of hours and deleted 600GB worth of files, then 200GB the next two days. Now have it on my daily to-do checklist to delete 100GB per day until until I've either created enough free space to last a couple of years, or else until I run out of crap to throw away.
