I replaced my board with a P5Q Deluxe a few months back. However, I passed the P5N-E SLI to my brother and it now runs a Q6600 quad at stock speed 24/7 quite happily. He'll run it until it dies, hopefully he'll get a few years out of it. I ran it 24/7 for over a year.
Ironically - one of the...
Well most of us with these boards have either sorted out their issues or abandoned the board. And hardly anyone buys these boards new now, so it's natural the thread has died.
As for Q9450 - no chance, the 45nm Quads are not compatible with this board, just the duals.
1001 BIOS worked perfectly for me, and I'd guess the 1002 is pretty similar. But I have now removed my board and replaced with an ASUS P5Q deluxe. Enables me to overclock my quad past 3GHz plus it enabled me to fit 8GB RAM which was pretty difficult with the P5N-E. Guess I'll fit a cheap dual...
Yes, I bought 8GB for another machine (P35 board) and it works fine there. I tried it in the P5N-E and same as you - 6GB is fine but 8GB won't boot. You don't get the normal "beep" to say all is well, and there is no output on the monitor. I suspect that 8GB is not possible with most memory...
Has anyone tried 8GB on this board ? It is supposed to take up to 8GB, but of course history tells us this is no guarantee it actually will. With earlier BIOSs I think there would have been little chance, but the later ones seem to have improved memory compatibility a lot, so I reckon there is a...
ASUS tech support emailed it to me in response to the problem I reported with 0901 in terms of not being able to increase the multiplier. I guess you can contact them as well
The machine is running perfectly on 1001. My 4 x 1GB of RAM is running sweet at it's rated 800, tested 12 hrs on...
2.3 is way too high, you run the risk of killing the RAM
2.2v may be OK but ideally needs some cooling on the RAM
2.1v is my personal maximum for long term use.
2T is the key with 4 sticks - did you set that ?
It may just be that your RAM is not that compatible with the board.
I don't know about those modules - but conservative settings would be 5-5-5-18 2T and 2.085v. If they don't work at those setting, then they just won't work. I assume you have stock 266FSB with memory 800 ?
My faith in ASUS is restored ! The 1001 BIOS ASUS support in China sent me now gives me full multiplier control back, and the 4 x 1GB memory hole is still fixed. Perfect, I'm very happy. I should never need to flash the BIOS again on this board.
Hmm.. it certainly solved my 4 x 1GB issue. Did you clear the CMOS after the flash ?
Is your Northbridge voltgae set to auto ? I've always used auto for that, and it still works at that setting for 800
How I did it: downloaded the 0901 BIOS onto a memory stick. Booted the machine and entered the BIOS, and went into EZFlash and followed the instructions. After the flash, it was necessary to clear the CMOS using the jumper on the motherboard. Instructions for that in the manual. Just moved the...
Thanks, yes I saw that. I'll wait a while for a new BIOS to fix the multiplier issue. ASUS Tech support have responded, saying they have passed it on to the appropriate department and for me to be patient..
I googled 0901 and the P5N-E SLI and founds lots of information. Including a 600 page thread on overclock.net forums, where the recommendation is that 0608 BIOS is usually the best for quads, although lots of positive comments on 0901 generally. Found one post on another forum where someone has...
I'll probably just leave it for a while. I see ASUS UK have a contact phone number so I'm going to phone them Monday and get an email address where I can email a support person directly. They need to fix it and issue a new BIOS. I'm not surprised in a way, because others have reported that some...
Well I updated to the 0901 BIOS, because I wanted to see if the 4 x 1GB memory hole was fixed. And indeed, on my machine it is !! I can now run my RAM at it's rated 800 speed. BUT and it's a big BUT, I can no longer increase the multiplier on my unlocked QX6700 Extreme CPU. ASUS how totally...
That certainly seems to be the case. I've seen lots of people hitting a wall at 3.0 with Quads. Never seen anyone get above that. It doesn't really suck, it's a budget SLI board so it has its limitations. The cheap 3-phase power is to blame I think, it can't provide enough stable power
Here is a graphic illustration of the problem this board has with quad core CPUs. Graphs from a 1 hour run of OCCT MIX test:
Firstly the 12v line - totally stable

And now the vcore - a disaster

To fix the 4 x 1GB memory hole, no other reason
At the moment I'm running 1:1 at 667. Although it should be 800, that's what the memory is capable of, but that's the "hole"and the machine won't boot at 800. I bet there is negligible speed difference though. I agree, linked speeds seem more...
I've been tossing up whether or not to do the BIOS upgrade. I think I might
As for quads - I would be inclined to wait and get a new board. I'm pretty sure quads will do 3.0GHz on this board and no more. Although that's pretty decent. Mine is rock solid at 3.0GHz. But it won't go any further...
This board is not great for overclocking quad core CPUs, that is a fact though. I've seen a lot of posts where people can get 3GHz max out of a quad core on this board. I think it is the 3-phase power which just runs out of steam.
1:1 on this board sets the memory to 1333, sorry for the confusion. 667 is what I meant.
I have a feeling I have it linked but I'm not sure. Temps are very low since I fitted the Ultra 120 Extreme
I run my quad at 333 x 9 = 3.0Ghz and I do that with the memory 1:1 at 667. I suggest that you give that a go. And despite some people managing high clocks at low volts, I need a manual setting of 1.375v to be Prime stable 24+hrs. NB voltage on auto, and memory set at 2.1v and manual timings...
No doubt there are Vista x64 650i drivers on NVidia's site, but I haven't bothered to install any. I've just installed whatever came via Windows Update, that's it. Works perfectly fine
Yes I've had problems in the past when moving a system to a new case, highly annoying. In theory it should be fine, but now it's not something I do lightly.
As for the CMOS - remove ATX power plug, take out battery, and move the jumper and leave it for a few mins or even longer. I presume...
Indeed, I've been running 24/7 for one year now with 4 x 1GB sticks with 100% stability, and that's all 4 cores fully loaded. So it's not a POS motherboard, but it isn't perfect either
I sympathise. But there are dozens of boards out there that have trouble with 4 x 1GB, not just this board. And it is not all ASUS's fault either, NVIDIA must take most of the blame for a buggy chipset (the 650i) that they released too early.
There is nothing really wrong with underclocking...
Interesting, I should upgrade to 0803. The memory hole is an irritation that is for sure. At the moment I'm running my 800 memory 1:1 at 667, being 333x9 = 3Ghz. I guess I could run it at 800 with this BIOS, although this board seem to overclock better with 1:1 from what I read here.
On...
Speedfan is know to be out by 15C on quad core CPU's, I've seen this observed by many different people. Everest is correct. Although they may have corrected speefan in later versions
