What are your thoughts on Windows 7 Beta? Any good?

I agree with the others that you don't actually want our opinions -- your mind is already made up. You hate Vista, we get it. Windows 7 has its roots in Vista, so what do you think it is more similar to -- Vista or the very old XP? That all said, I run a dual boot setup with Vista x64 and...

Gaming PC for use with Full-HD TV

Hi there, Ok, first you are confused due to Intel's marketing scheme. 1333MHz is a QDR rate. It actually does NOT run at 1333MHz. It runs at 1/4 of that -- 333MHz. It can simply transmit 4 bits whereas a mid-90s style bus could only transmit 1 bit. Thus, it appears to be clocked at...

I am so confused! Q6600 + what mobo + what ram!

I have a 965 mobo, from Gigabyte (965-DQ6), and based on that experience they make good overclocking boards. Took a 1.8GHz E4300 to 2.93GHz (367x8). That leaves my RAM at 980MHz 5-5-5-15. I've seen it post and boot windows up to 3.2GHz, but its just not 100% stable without increasing the...

Need a little help with my build

For the same money, a Wolfdale is a superior processor. I've had two successful builds with Gigabyte motherboards for Core 2 Duo. I took my E4300 (1.8GHz) all the way to 2.96GHz on a Gigabyte 965-DQ6, and that's running 6GB of RAM @ 980MHz. Anything more and I'd have to up the voltage past...

    Replacing linux on new system

That is a perfectly good idea. You shouldn't have any trouble installing Windows on a hard drive that used to have linux.

4 pin vs 8 pin +12v on NF570 SLI Board?

Yeah, that's no problem. The other 4 pins aren't for GFX, but for your CPU. I doubt this will affect your OC in any way, if you choose to do so.

    Help with 1st PC build

You should go with the 320MB GTS. The 640 doesn't provide anything really tangible over that. I've got the 8800GTS 320, an E4300 @ 2.93GHz (366x8), and can play BioShock in Vista at 2048x1536 with all the detail settings on High (DX10). Granted, AA & AF are off, but I'm still getting more...

Building my first computer ever Tips appreciated.

Hmm... old 120GB? Doesn't sound good. When I built mine, not sure how much it ended up costing, maybe $1500 US, I used all new Seagate 7200.10 SATA drives. I picked up 4 of them, all 320GBs. Configured them like this: 75GB RAID10 781GB RAID5 Obviously loaded the OS onto the...

Building my first computer ever Tips appreciated.

Nope, horrible cooler to OC a Q6600 with. You need atleast a Tuniq Tower 120 to OC that on air. I took my E4300 from 1.8GHz to 3GHz with that. I still have another 10-15C of headroom if I want to push it a little more. Where's your HARD DRIVES?

    E6300 idling at 60 - HELP!

I've never run that program before, and my LGA775 board is being RMA'd, so I can't run it at the moment, but is anyone else alarmed by the chipset temps? 60C on the Nortbridge and 83C on the South?! Southbridges usually are passive, because they don't get hot. Something seems really wrong...

    Upgrading to a s478 3.0ghz

Dude, he just said NO GAMES AT ALL. The 6200 is fine, leave it alone. Netburst architecture is basically pwned nowadays, so the logical upgrade would be a S939 X2. If you use AM2 you end up with useless RAM, same with the C2D boards. The X2 3800+ is right around $100 Retail, and if you...

    upgrading RAM query

Looks like if your board is that PCChips M810, you have 2 DIMM slots. From newegg.com, you could get a pqi 512MB PC133 stick for $53, add $5 for shipping, and get $5 back from a mail in rebate, if you wish. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141515 or for a couple...

Conroe build, not really on a tight budget

If you're open to RAID0, you could replace the 500GB drive with two 250GBs for the same price. The case seems to get good reviews, it should do well. With that sort of budget for pretty much just the core parts, it's hard to pick something bad. Going for DDR2-1066 wouldn't really...

    COUNTDOWN TO CORE DUO 2

looks like right now the fx-62 is $1060, and the approximate intel equivelant, the e6700 is msrp of $530. so amd should have a 50% price cut...and then their most expensive proc is $530. once amd cuts prices, it'd be interesting to see what the same money an e6600 can get from amd. im...

Hardocp Intel Core 2 Review up

wouldnt it have made more sense to do some benchmarks that depend on the cpu rather than running games at the limits of video cards? some divx encoding or something procesor intensive...sane stuff.

I Formatted My 200GB, Shows Up As 186GB

See, here's the trouble...metric uses 10^9 as "Giga" so 200GB would be 200*10^9 bytes. Now, Windows doesn't have a "PROBLEM" as some suggest in that it uses a silly, stupid, anti-metric, archaic definition of Gigabyte as 2^30. The trouble is that HD manufacturers exploit the difference between...

First time rig-builder in need of some help

The X2 4200+ isn't a bad choice. It differs from the 4400+ in that it has 1/2 the L2 cache. This doesn't make much of a difference, since it still has 512K per core. With 1GB DIMMs its hard not to end up with 3-3-3-8 for DDR timings. OCZ has a Platinum series ($135/1GB...$13 rebate if it...

    Wireless Router Question

all Windows computers have a hidden root share. It shares your entire C:\, as well as any other hard drive letters you have. they get called \\your_computer_name_here\c$ for C: for example...adding a $ makes it invisible to the "My Network Places" browser thingy.

whats the difference between cpu socket numbers?

Standard DDR and DDR2 is 64-bit wides at varying frequencies (MHz). When you multiply the width of the path (the connection from RAM to Northbridge, or in the AMD64 case, RAM to CPU) by the frequency of the path, you get the bandwidth of the path, and thus the actual theoretical bandwidth of...

    WTF is going on?

why doesn't DFI's site even list a Lanparty Ultra-D? http://www.dfi.com.tw/Product/product_s..._TYPE0B=LP&CATEGORY_NAME0B=%25&SITE=NA You did run memtest86 on it, for a few hours or so, right? BTW, I have that same OCZ RAM (actually, Rev 2, but whatever). It's rated 2-3-3-6@400. On my...

How often do you reformat your computer?

Haven't reinstalled Windows since April '04, and that was due to a new RAID chip on a new mobo (Athlon XP 3000+/400). Other Windows machine I did in June (Athlon 900), due to newly found hard drives (had 40GB, then added in a 20, 40, and 60, made it into a JBOD array with the onboard RAID and...
