Is the lifespan of SSDs improving?

I don't know if my situation is out of the ordinary, but I recently got an 840 Pro 256 GB drive to use as my C: drive (for Windows 7). I've managed to get the Write Amplification Factor down to 'only' 4.5 or so. Using your numbers above (a 120 GB drive for 1,000 PE Cycles and 100 GB a day)...

Samsung 840 Pro- Higher wear-out rate?

Just an update. I managed to get my WAF (for the last cycle) down to about 4.6 from about 6.6. I discovered that a hardware monitor program (Aquasuite) had been configured to record temperature info (etc.) every 10 seconds. Turning this off got me down to 4.6, but I was still hoping for...

Samsung 840 Pro- Higher wear-out rate?

My Oldest notes are from 71 hours use (and after loading the saved C: drive image). At that time it was wear level count=1 with 177 GB written.

Samsung 840 Pro- Higher wear-out rate?

I checked through "OS optimization" if that's what you mean. Indexing and prefetch are disabled. Write Cache buffer is enabled. > A 5 WA is definitely high, unless you're running mostly DB-powered software, though. Not doing any explicit DB stuff. Aside from the initial load, I'm...

Samsung 840 Pro- Higher wear-out rate?

    > turn off defrag Defrag is/was already off. > We found the 840 pro works best with our servers with 192GB out of 256GB usable. At the moment the drive in question is only 50% full. > But honestly are you going to still have that SSD by the time it wears out? Maybe. Maybe...

Samsung 840 Pro- Higher wear-out rate?

Hi; I recently replaced my old 160 GB Intel X-25M SSD with a new larger Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB drive. I'm using this as my C: drive for Windows 7. It's early days yet, but it seems like I'm seeing a higher Wear rate on the Samsung than I was seeing on the old Intel. After about...

    AHCI setting in bios

    > The scenario you described, you should be safe enabling AHCI. FWIW, I just added an Intel X25-M 160 GB SSD to my system (Asus Ramage Formula X48). Before I started I was set up as IDE. I found and followed a recommendation on how to switch to AHCI mode (for Vista). The claim was that...

    Using Acronis with SSDs....

    > If you wanted to preserve an alignment (other than 63 sectors), > you need to backup and restore the 'entire physical drive' in one > shot. For both TI 11 and Ti 2010 this seems to preserve my 1 MB > alignment. Just to clarify a bit more, this seems to be true when you backup and...

    Using Acronis with SSDs....

    > Will I run into any alignment problems if I decide to recover my SSD from the USB external HD? It seems that the answer is 'It depends'... I just got a 160 GB G2 X25-M SSD myself. It sounds like you want to make an actual image 'copy' to the external drive. I haven't done this...

    P35/X38- No ECC Memory?

Thanks. Too bad about the X38 power draw. After seeing the 680i power use I was hoping for something cooler from the Intel series...

    P35/X38- No ECC Memory?

    > They are both desktop chipsets. You usually only get official ECC support > on workstation/server chipsets. I was under the impression that the X38 was being billed as a replacement for the 975X, which does appear to support ECC. Crucial lists DDR2 ECC modules for an ASUS 975X P5W...

    P35/X38- No ECC Memory?

I haven't seen anywhere that states if the the X38 will/won't support ECC memory. All the P35 motherboards spec's I've looked at seem to be for non-ECC memory. So, should I assume that Intel (or the Motherboard manufacturers) have abandoned ECC memory for this generation of chipset...

WHAT DDR RAM for Asus A8N-SLI Premium?

For what it's worth, I'm currently running my A8N-SLI Premium with 2 GB (2 x 1GB) ECC DIMMS from Crucial at stock speeds. No problem so far.

    A8N-SLI premium lockup problems

My system conforms with at least items 2,3 and 5 above. Also, I use memtest86+ (Available at Memtest86+) since it seems to be a little more up to date then plain old memtest86 (last time I checked). For those who might not be familiar with these tools, I came across...

    A8N-SLI premium lockup problems

I don't know if you are still interested in finding what part of your current system is causing the problem or not, but you could try using Prime95 and 'underclocking' as a way to try and isolate the weak link. You could first try and run Prime95's 'torture test' for up to 12-24 hours the...

    GTO2 Back in Stock!

I recently got the Sapphire X800 GTO2 and modded it with a VF700-Cu. After converting to 16 pipes, the max 100% stable overclock (using ATITool and it's automatic artifact detection) is about 513 MHz core and 595 MHz memory (at about 68 degrees C core temp). When it was only 12 pipes...

    Question to A8N-SLI Premium owners

On the A8N-E I have I noticed that the Nforce Chipset fan was reported as 'power supply' fan speed in AsusProbe (and the Power supply speed was not being reported at all when plugged into the motherbaord header for it). When I went to the A8N-SLI Premium (V 2.00), I just plugged the S12 fan...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

I didn't see this before now, so appologies for the late update. In this case, I was upset because: A) The problem I wanted to report dealt with a BIOS setting being broken. It was equally broken for under-clocking as it was for over-clocking. I was asking for...

If you have an x2 please post

I'm trying to remember exactly what I loaded, but it's all a blur right now. I'm pretty sure the Asus CD does something just because you put it in. I'm think I then installed the Nforce 4 AMD 6.65 drivers, and installed the Ethernet drivers (definitely NOT the NAM/Firewall and IDE driver...

If you have an x2 please post

I'm not exactly sure what they're supposed to buy you. I figured I'd stick with the native Microsoft ones until as such time as I had a compelling reason to change. (Especially after seeing how well the Nvidia ethernet Firewall stuff works on my system...)

If you have an x2 please post

I am running an X2 4400 in an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium. I got it mainly for the passive cooling (for the NForce 4) and the 7 slots. I'm generally happy with it. I use the Nforce 4 SATA, but didn't install the Nvidia IDE drivers. I haven't tried the built-in sound (I have the Audigy 2), the...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

Sure, now I find out :) ... If only ASUS had tried to help me (instead of telling me to 'go pound salt') we could have known this 7 weeks ago. As it is, I ended up with a different motherboard. Looking on the bright side, at least I now have a motherboard with a passively cooled chipset...

    a8n-sli "premium" edition

I've just set up an A8N-SLI Premium (with Heatpipe chipset cooler), and a Seasonic 'Super Silencer' 460 (SS-460AGX). It also has a blue/black fan connector. I connected this to the unused 'chipset cooler' fan header (since the fan isn't needed with the heatpipe). ASUS Probe 2.24.02 now...

    A8N-SLI, Standby, and Vcore

Hi; I'm just setting up a new ASUS A8N-SLI Premium (BIOS 1005). I've noticed that the Vcore set in BIOS doesn't seem to get preserved after restore from S3 standby. I have my system (BIOS) set to Vcore= 1.450 V, 'CPU Frequency' 234 MHz, CPU Mult x11 (using a 'San Diego' 3700+ (E4)...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

My theory is that they are locked, but the (undesired) HTT overclock is the 'weak link' and it was toasting the data after only 10-15% O.C.. Using the 1001 BIOS and a 3X HTF multiplier I could get up to about 247 MHz with no SATA corruption.

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

At 228/1140 Mhz my system was already corrupting my SATA drives. I also suspected that manually setting the HTF in Ntune didn't really work (despite the fact it appeared to by what Ntune reported), but I never followed through to confirm this.

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

At least as far as I can tell, setting the memory 'Max. Memclock' is really a divider setting. So, setting this to 400 MHz gives 1:1, 333 gives 1:1.2, 200 MHz gives 1:2, etc. It looks to me like the memory speed listed in BIOS/DRAM setting is the speed when the 'CPU Frequency' is at it's...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

O.k, after playing with this for a few days, I have a list of the 'bad' things I've found when running with the 1001 BIOS (at least with my setup). 1) As previously mentioned, I can't find 1T/2T Memory command rate setting in the 1001 version (at least with my memory). 2) The...

    Unstable overclock after BIOS update...

Once you get your system up again (presumably at closer to stock speeds) you could check that the HTF multiplier being used is actually following the BIOS setting. (You should be able to use Nvidia NTune or SiSoft Sandra for this). It may or may not be your problem, but it's one of the...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

On My system, with 1001, the first four options under Advanced/CPU/DRAM are: Max Memclock CAS # RAS# to CAS # Delay MIN RAS # Activation time I still don't see any 1T/2T setting. Perhaps it doesn't recognize my memory in that version and I get a...

    asus a8n sli deluxe temperature

If the A8N-SLI is anything like my A8N-E, the 'motherboard temp' is definitely not the Chipset temperature. I changed the fan speed of the chipset fan, and even (carefully) used 'Freeze Spray" on the chipset heatsink. None of these caused the 'Motherbaord' temp to change...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

So far, the only bad thing (with very limited testing) is that there appears to be no 1T/2T memory options in the BIOS. I called their tech. support again today (if only to report that I was right and they were wrong :-) ). I explained that this multiplier used to work in 1001, but has...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

O.k., I just tried the old 1001 BIOS, and surprise surprise, as I expected the stuck HTF multiplier problem is gone. With 1003, 1004, and 1005 the best "CPU Frequency" I could get (with the CPU and memory underclocked) was about 220 MHz without corrupting the SATA drives. With a quick test...

New A8N SLI DeLuxe Bios 1011 Final

Well, I would if I could find it. New A8N SLI DeLuxe Bios 1011 Final

To say that overclocking is generally "not promised" isn't exactly true in the case of the A8N-SLI and A8N-E. Take a look at the box (say at Newegg at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage...20ATX%20AMD%20Motherboard%20-%20Retail It says on the front "Advanced Overclocking features"...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

Well, things are looking pretty grim for the home team. I eventially talked to the tech. support people about this. Basically they said: 1) They don't believe that this ever used to work differently (in a prior BIOS). They think this must be a feature of the processor itself...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

It seems to me that to be fixed, they have to both realize there's a problem and then want to fix it (assuming it's fixable). Since they blew off my report, I'm thinking we haven't even made it to the 'realizing there's a problem' part...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

Well, it looks like we can't hold out much hope of getting this fixed. I tried to report this as a problem to ASUS, and the response I got was: "For Overclocking support please check with www.overclockers.com or www.tomshardware.com" I guess they don't even want to investigate if this...

Asus A8N-E HTF stuck at 5x?

I tried Sandra 2005.SR1. So far, it looks like changing the HTF multiplier in BIOS has no effect on the reported HTT speed, or the results from a few of the Sandra benchmarks I tried. Using Ntune changes the Sandra reported HTT frequency, but I still haven't seen this result in any change...
