Be sure to buy he same motherboard as your current one or you may have to do a outright reinstall of windows. If you can't get the same one then buy one with the same chipset.
I think the more important question here is why is windows doing this? It is possible that your HDD is starting to fail; you should use you HDD manufactures utility to check the drive
You will have to do a clean/Repair install of windows. When you make a dramatic change like this windows may accept the changes if they are not to dramatic or it may stop working.
clean the card of any dust and check that the fan is spinning well. If the fan is making any odd noses or not spinning well then buy a replacement cooling kit for your card their like $30.
Use a live CD like BartPE or ultimate boot CD for windows to backup your files to a removable device or another HDD then do a clean install of windows.
got to your HDD manufactures website and download a copy of their diagnostic software for your drive then run it and it should tell you if anything is wrong with the drive.
I had this happen to one of the older creative zen micros I had to disassemble the thing and manually reset the heads as they were stuck in the read position but I think creative fixed that on one of the latter versions of the micro?
Check who the manufacture of the drive is and run their diagnostic program you can get it from the manufactures web site. In my experience when chkdsk hangs like that it's usually that the HDD is failing.
Are there any errors in device manager? Try updating drivers for your IDE controllers. try using another drive and see if you get similar errors. it could be that that IDE connection on your mobo does not work.
I did a fixboot from recovery console and it worked. Still I want to get rid of any left over ME files though I suppose a clean install is the only real option? Thanks for your suggestions.

I installed RC1 about a month ago on a friends PC and it did the same thing. It turned out that I had to install the third party raid drivers for it to work even though his PC had only one drive and was therefore not using raid.
Well 64 bit will be able to run 64 bit apps when they come out so I wont have to buy a new version in the future. But I want to be sure that I wont suffer from driver issues like the issues win xp 64 had before I decide which to buy.
