I can't believe there are 0 topics about the new AMD architecture. Me I am super stoked about this. I am a huge fan of AMD and can not wait to see the day when AMD can finally have a superior CPU to intel. Come on guys WTF where is the love.

    advice on socket 754 overclock

Ok I have a socket 754 Athlon 64 3000+ @ stock 2 ghz with stock cooler. Since I can?t afford a proper upgrade (mobo, cpu, ram) I am considering overclocking my current cpu. I have an epox nforce4 socket 754 8NPAJ motherboard and one gig of budget corsair ddr400 memory. I want to overclock as...

    Help Installing OS

Get a 98 boot floppy (aka rescue disk) from someone that has a working 98 system. I forget the process (I havent ran windows 98 in over 5 years) but I do know it will create a bootable floppy disk with CD ROM drivers to reinstall with. The reason you cant boot off the CD is probably that...

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

UPDATE: Ok, I got the arctic silver and alcohol and decided to reseat the heatsink one more time with the new thermal grease. I removed the heatsink/fan, cleaned off all of the stock thermal grease from the chip & heatsink (remember I did this already about 3 weeks ago but used stock...

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

Well here's the thing. Tonight I was playing Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion (great game btw) and the system shut down. I set in the BIOS to shutdown @ 70C and apparently it did just that. Upon rboot I see my CPU temp @ 67 so I think I'm gonna need to get that replacement heatsink/fan...

What is a *reliable* SATA drive

I?m building a web server for a non profit organization that will be running mostly dynamic database driven content on apache 2 w/ php4. I?m pretty confident in my choice of hardware so far except for the hard drives. I will be utilizing RAID 5 for reliability reasons and since SCSI is out of...

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

I think the poster is saying the BIOS doesn't have an elegent way to idle, i.e. it doesn't HLT the processor, just spins in a thight loop (while polling hardware, sleeping for en event etc.), which is the same as running under 100% load.

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

Ok well the temps seem to have dropped a bit. I switched the power connectors on my intake fans and routed the internal cables a bit better which should help airflow. I still idle around 40C, and go up to 52C at load but this seems to be OK since I have 0 stability issues.

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

This machine has been rock solid stabiloty wise since I've had it. I changed mobo once from a VIA chipset MSI board to the nforce4 epox board I have now to get PCIe. I've never had any lockups or reboots ever. But, I thought 70C was WAY to high a temp for such a humble processor. EDIT: The...

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

Like I said earlier, I have an epox nforce4 754 motherboard, I forget the model but I dont think epox made more than a few nf4 754 boards.

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

Ok let me restate this. On my case there are a total of 5 fans, 2 x 120mm exaust on the rear, 2 x 120mm intake on the front and 1 x 80mm blowhole on top. And thanks for the thermal paste tip, I didnt know one should have the heatsink actually spread out the paste.

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

This is what I assume would be more normal. Well thanks to everyone who replied. I'll be getting a new heatsnink/fan asap and clean my CPU off before installing it.

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

The case has good airflow and is located on the floor with nothing around it. I forgot to mention my case also has 2 x 120mm intake fans in the front. I applied a very thin layer of thermal paste and used a credit card to wipe off excess (like I said my brother helped me do it the correct...

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

I have a CoolerMaster aluminum case, forget the model, with one 80mm fan on top and 2 120mm fans on the rear. My major conern is if those temps are too high for my processor.

Athlon 64 3000+ temps too high?

I?m sure this question is asked tons of times, but I tried searching and couldn?t find a topic specific to my cpu, so here goes? I have an Athlon 64 3000+ on socket 754 that seems to be overheating. I idle at around 45 C and it goes up to 60 C at full load. This is after I removed the...

    2U rack case

I should have been more specific. It needs to be 2U since its going in a datacenter. Noise in not a concern. Power supply does not need to be hot swapable. edit: hooflung, thanks for the advice now my question is do regular power supplies even fit in a 2U case? I know know to...

    programming and multi-core cpu's

Algorithims have many different formulations. There are parts that are serial in nature (meaning things need to happen in order) and parts that lend themselves to parallel programming. Programmers need to find ways to vectorize their algorithims, but, as this example will show, there are...

    2U rack case

I'm in the market for a server case. 2U is what I'm looking at. I'm a total noob when it comes to server building though I consider myself an expert on regular PC construction. I'm looking for a solid yet inexpensive case with at least: 2 internal 3.5" bays 1 external 5.25" bay Any...

Is there a way to create a DVD-R or two from a 11-CD Recovery Disc set? Also, driver issues. Yay.

The quick answer: no When dealing with "recovery disks" from a computer manufacturer, usually you're talking about all the applications, settings, and operating system all scrambled together. I'm sure it could be done, but I wouldn't know how to go about making the DVD bootable using the...

    Installing new video drivers...

This came up in a recent thread. I always uninstall my vid card before I swap it out for another. It takes a few minutes and saves a big headache if you don't and there's a problem. Sometimes when swapping vid cards (without uninstalling), I've heard of windows getting really confussed and...

"HIGH SPEED USB DEVICE connected to NON HIGH SPEED USB HUB"

No you're not missing anything, High Speed USB is MS speak for USB 2.0. I'm assuming you have at least sevrice pack 1 installed, which is required for USB2.0 support. If you have SP1 installed and the newest drivers for your motherboard, USB2.0 should be enabled. Since you said you had...

6800gt pci-e with no signal to monitor

Could be anything really. Did you uninstall your old vid card prior to removing it and physically installing the new one? I find that not uninstalling video cards sometimes confusses the hell out of windows. If you can put the old vid card in and get into windows, uninstall the video card...

    Mixed Ram problem?

Everything I've read seems to indicate mixing RAM modules is a bad idea. I'm not sure of the technical reasons, but my guess would be timing concerns. I'd suggest emailing OCZ first, explain the situation and see what they say. Maybe you can get a replacement module. Also, try memtest86...

Help on building a 2U server

Hello all. I'm new to the forums, but not to Anandtech. I have years of experience building PCs, but none building any type of server. I need to build a server for an nonprofit organization and would like any suggestions from the community. This server would mainly be running apache, hosting...
