    Silent terrabyte storage/server - how?

You're very right, and that is sort of bothering me, especially seeing as my budget is tight since I'll be buying a new and pretty high-end laptop at the same time. But then the argument could also be made that for maybe "just" $200-300 extra over the NAS will buy me a much more flexible rig...

    Silent terrabyte storage/server - how?

Since I am in the luxurious position to postone this build a few weeks, I think I'll wait for the 45W CPU's - didn't know those were coming as I have been way out of the loop for a long time. Matthias99, I too think that I'd have heard more about on-board RAID corruption if it was a common...

    Silent terrabyte storage/server - how?

This unit has come up a few times in my "research". But "can barely hear mine" might mean something else for you than it does for me. At what distance? In what environment? I'm really, really picky on noise for this build =) BTW, what I want HTTP for is to use a PHP-based interface for...

    Silent terrabyte storage/server - how?

Blain: I haven't had any proper look at what RAID card I'd choose if I were to go the VIA ITX route, but the seller I'm looking to buy through has the HighPoint RocketRAID 1740 at an OK price. (Note on the seller thing: I'm in Sweden, which is why I won't be using newegg etc.) EDIT: I'll use...

    Silent terrabyte storage/server - how?

jpeyton: Good advice about the AMD processors, thanks. I have already decided on the 500GB Samsung drives (since I already have one and I like it) and the same thing goes for optical - I'll move over my existing samsung drive from the current tower. The Corsair 520 PSU was also my top...

    Silent terrabyte storage/server - how?

I've had a look around among previous threads, but can't find anything that covers my specific needs, so I'll start a new thread. If I've missed some old posting that covers this, feel free to point me to it. PURPOSE: I'm going to switch to a laptop as my main computer, and thus need a new...

    Socket A silent cooler?

The search didn't give me any threads about this, so my apologies if this has been discussed recently. I have an Athlon 2500+ (Barton core) on an Asus A7N8X with a Spire heatsink (this one). I intend to use this box as a server running 24/7, but for that it needs to be silenced. The...

    Need RAM & graphics recommendations

Todays software synthesizers are eating my current Athlon 2500+ (Barton) to death, so I need something faster. The Opteron 144 seems to be a stellar overclocker, so the plan for now is to pair it off with a DFI Lanparty (non-SLI) NF4 mobo to get at least 2.6 GHz - No need to push for the 3 GHz...

man my 2500+ barton is hella disappointing...

From reading all the threads on the 2500+ here, it seems to me that people who are dissapointed run very high FSB's (200 and above) and have week 7 or earlier chips. Anyone with a week 7 who could try 12.5x och 13x (if you have access to that multiplier) with a lower FSB and see if its more...

    Yet another Random Reboot Thread

I can run a program that uses sound just fine, it doesn't crash as soon as I use such an app; thus it took a while to spot the common denominator that theere was always sound playing when it booted. Do you have any PCI cards in your box?

man my 2500+ barton is hella disappointing...

I've said it before, but here it goes again for reference: I want to run RAM synchrous and I've only got PC2700 so I'm limited to about 180 with the FSB, but I can do 180x12.5 at 1.700 vcore rock steady, giving me 2250MHz. Ran Prime95 for 7 hours during normal use and no errors. CPU temp was...

Corrupt or Missing hal.dll Computer Want Boot

Please excuse me for this not-the-least-bit-helpful post, but I just can't resist: Anything going wrong with a computer involving the word HAL calls for a quote from 2001 - A Space Odyssey: "I'm completely operational, and all my circuits are functioning perfectly."

    Yet another Random Reboot Thread

I get the exact same thing, but only when I'm using an application that uses the sound card (could be anything from watching a movie clip in windows media player to producing music in Cubase SX). My memory reports no errors in MemTest86. I got it a few times under Win2K as well, but it's more...

why system properties report 1022.0MB instead of 1024mb ?

I've got 2x512 on an A7N8X Deluxe too, but running XP. It tells me I've got 1,00GB, so ligically that should mean it sees it as 1024. 1022 would be 0,99GB or something.

    problem on WinXP boot

I get the exact same thing as in scenario #3, but only after the computer has been turned off for about 10 hours or more. I hit the reset switch and then it powers up just fine. Best software for monitoring temps

Speedfan gives me about 5 degrees (celcius) higher readings for CPU and mobo, for some reason. Compared to MBM5 and Asus Probe, that is. But I use speedfan since I don't want to run the CPU fan at full speed, and it seems to work very well.

Why is the Barton more popular than the 2100+ to OC?

With an ASUS A7N8X rev 1.04 running the 1003 BIOS and a week 8 Barton (2500+) I got 180x12.5 (2250MHz). This is with a Vantec Aeroflow C7040 cooler, the thermal compound that came with it and no fancy case cooling. Serious clockers with SLK900's and such should get over 2300. People who complain...

    XP2500 Overclocking results?

yours is from the week before mine. chizow has one just like yours, and I saw you had been in his thread too. make suer you have the proper drivers and directX for BF1942. if it still won't run, try other apps/games too. if you're getting any more crashes and odd behaviour, I'd RMA.

    XP2500 Overclocking results?

There's a high probability that that's a driver issue, but with prime95 erroring out, there is a pattern starting to emerge... make sure you've got directX of the required version, up-to-date video drivers and all that. If it still won't run, then RMA the thing... I feel sorry for you man...

    XP2500 Overclocking results?

yeah, if it can't pass prime95 at the stock clocking something is wrong for sure. find out what the RMA policy is for your retailer (I'm from sweden and our laws are probably quiet different from yours) and if possible, wait until the new mobo arrives. at least that's what I'd do.

Jeff, that's not good at all... if you're running multiple sticks of RAM, try removing all but one. If it still errors, try using the other stick. If it still gives you errors, wait for the new board... What heatsink are you using? 114F when idle seems a little high.

Why do case doors open to the left?

That ain't a problem for me as I'm ambidextrous ;-) But it IS stupid, especially if you have a windowed case; You'd want that sitting to your right so that you see the window, but then the door would open the wrong way. A design flaw for sure.

    Are UV CCFL dangerous?

The reason eyes hurt from looking directly into a blacklight for extended periods of time is that the frequencies emitted are just on the border of what the human eye can see. Since the eyes will struggle to focus, they are strained and will eventually hurt and water. Theer is no dangerous...

Barton 2500+ Results vs. the Grand Daddy of 2100+ T-bred B's

as I posted in another thread: with non-hardcore cooling (vantec aeroflow c7040, and the thermal compound that came with it) and the voltage at 1.700 I got 180x12.5 to be very stable. core temp was 47-48 under load (prime95) and everything felt rock solid. this is with A7N8X rev 1.04 and the...

help with some basic case fan placement!

Warm air is lighter than cool air, so exhausts should be at the top of your case and intakes in the lower regions. Not having room for a proper 80mm (or larger) rear exhaust fan could be a problem. What kind of PSU do you have? Does it have one or two fans? A two-fan PSU (intake at bottom...

I just got a 120MB Maxtor with 8MB cache. Speed is excellent and it's surprisingly quiet. I had never cared about harddrive noise before, but now I realize how sweet it is to have a quiet drive. Jeff: I'm using TwinMOS PC2700 (333MHz) rated at CAS2.5 but I'm currently running it at 360MHz CAS2, so there is hope :-) I can do this with a 12.5 multiplier to get 2250MHz, but then I need to up the vcore and since I'm mainly going for a quiet rig I'll settle for slightly less. I did some...

    XP2500 Overclocking results?

I got my 2500+ yesterday so I haven't had time to do much testing yet, but the main bottleneck in my system is the memory. I'm running 2x512MB TwinMOS PC2700 CAS2.5, but they report no errors in Memtest86 when clocked at 2-2-3-7 at 360MHz. This was faster than 2-2-3-6, which also worked fine...

    Helvetica Font: Anyone have it?

Helvetica isn't freeware, so if you don't want to pay I suggest sticking with Arial if possible, as it's a pretty close copy of Helvetica. The really good looking one (IMO) is Helvetica Neue though. Oh, and if you have a mac I think Apple still includes Helvetica with their OS'es. edit: spelling

Best Silent Cooler for socket A

I read the big CPU cooling review at Tom's Hardware and decided to go with a Vantec Aeroflow 7040 for its excellent noise/performance ratio. Not recommended for any serious overclocking perhaps, but should easily handle a stock clocked 3000+.

    Dual Monitor setup question

It depends on what you want to use your computer for. I personally still run a Matrox G400MAX with dual head, and it's all I need since I don't care about gaming (I produce music rather than play games). The Matrox cards have very, very crisp graphics and support good refresh rates and...
