Basically, whenever Windows Update starts up, the svchost it's running on will spike to 100% cpu until it either shuts off itself or I kill the process via Process Explorer.
I can't update my Windows XP. I don't recall when this started, but it's a problem spanning multiple hard drives. At...
Huh. And I just realized I can't use Microsoft Update at all. Whenever I do, svchost goes to 100% and the update stops.
Also, the problematic svchost just so happens to be whatever one automatic updates is under. Because I ended svchost that it was in originally just for the hell of it and...
Odd... I have an unknown account with access to that svchost... Wonder what that means.
"account unknown (S-1-5-32-547)"
Right above Administrators, Authenticated Users and SYSTEM. It's only on this and one other instance of svchost, as far as I can tell.
What is this?
I wish I didn't have it on here at all. It's not even my damn printer; it's my parents' printer and I use it over the home network. I still had to install the damn software because it has the drivers...
I hate HP. Dammit Google, get with the program already. We want Google printers. And...
!!!!!
Different instance of svchost.exe running wmiprvse.exe just spiked my cpu usage. Under that process explorer it was sucking up all of my processing power.
That doesn't appear to be it... the other svchost is still doing the process sucking. Grrr...
Well, it's been 4 days since I disabled automatic updates, and everything appears to be running smoothly. I'll keep tabs on it for a few more weeks before declaring it safe, as I have my doubts.
The strange thing for me is that I had this problem on my old hard drive. It just kinda happened...
At random, I'll have a massive cpu spike that I can blame on svchost.exe. This program is either tweaking by itself or a .dll file running it is randomly going damn nuts. The instance in question is the one that covers:
Yeah. A lot. It will, entirely at random, just go completely haywire for...
Ok, there's a Software Explorer in Windows Defender. the instance of svchost that's running amok randomly (including now) is svchost 920, which handles:
so I have an instance of svchost.exe running randomly up to 100* CPU usage with mem usage near 200k. before Windows DEP would just force it off, resulting in a few dll files not running, and consequently some things wouldn't work properly. Now it just goes retarded and I have to wait a few...
With all the problems I've run into (Which I believe stem from a virus that I cannot detect) I was thinking of formatting my F:/ drive. Taking all necessary files from my C:/ drive and placing them on my F:/ drive after said formatting, I'd then format the C:/ drive and reinstall Windows anew...
I really don't want to do the limited accounts, since I save in Windows quite often.
And come to think of it, I installed the HP drivers and around that time the DEP error started. Also, I don't know what's causing the lag, but when I enter the task manager, an instance of svchost is running...
...I didn't even think of this. I do have an HP printer.
Thing is, I'm not the only one on the network who uses it. My entire family does. Yet I'm the only one getting the problem. Perhaps I should check for updates...
As for the exact message, It says 'Generic Host Process for Win32...
Son of a bitch. Still nothing.
I'm beginning to think I don't actually have a malware based problem, just a corrupted Windows file that somehow jumped from one drive to the next.
...
Well, I've been digging through my registry in hopes of finding whatever file it is that's running when I boot Windows, hogging my system resources. So far, DEP shuts off an instance of svchost, and there's also an instance of it in the task manager that's hogging system memory for seemingly no...
Well... Hm. I don't have basically any 'liberated' games... There's one I have, but that only came about after I had my new hard drive, plus my friend has it. I have another, as well as two other applications, but those all came way before the problem even arose on the first hard drive.
I...
How did I miss this?
*facepalm*
Edit: Anyway, I'm probably going to go out and buy a DVD burner next week. I'm going to make a checklist of all of my important files, make sure I have backups of my programs and things (such as DeadAIM, of which a friend 'liberated' for me), make sure I...
I'll think about it.
Any more programs I could try in safe mode?
Edit: In order to have a more open minded approach, from here on I'd like to consider this problem Malware, not specifically a worm, as I don't exactly know what it is yet.
As much as I hate bumping this topic so much, I ran Kaspersky in safe mode. Again. Found nothing.
Windows Defender: Nothing
Spybot: A few bots, nothing much else
Adaware: A few tracking cookies
Total time: Atleast 7 hours wasted.
And I'm going to be blowing even more when I reformat...
It's just odd to me that it's happening... It came from my old hard drive, atleast I think, but my old hard drive didn't have the lag on startup.
Also, pictures will randomly not show up as thumbnails when I have then set to do so. What makes them thumbnails, anyway?
And it's a shame I can't kill these worthless people. I's just a good thing I have nothing worth anything on this computer.
Edit: I do go through a router, though, does this help at all?
Wait, what? Maybe it's because I've got a multitude of things flowing through my head, but I didn't get that. Am I formatting both drives, or just one? Because I don't have enough CD's for my things and I lack a DVD burner.
So, where do I download SP2 to a disc from? I have a computer I can...
Urge to kill rising...
1) unplug all network cables & wireless networking so worms can't attack
As in, put all of my files on my other drive and delete everything else off of said drive, including the WINDOWS folder?
2) start Windows Setup from a (Microsoft-made) CD, decline the offer...

Okay, Kaspersky only found 2 things in my F: drive. Yet I have this feeling that my problem is still here, even though after startup any lag or problems are completely gone.
I'm considering reformatting... Again. Though I'd need to completely redo my F:/ drive, deleting any and all files that...
Yeah, that did, and Kaspersky is installing now.
Some things I've noticed:
-DEP is STILL blocking Generic Host Process for Win32 services
-Upon Windows loading, svchost is hogging memory usage for up to a minute, making it nearly impossible to do anything
-Windows fix for the DEP problem...
Two copies of windows update? Yeah, I think that happened. See, when I try to access update.windows.com, it loads and then locks up, forcing me to close IE. Which apparently happened twice.
Also, I'm STILL getting this error from this topic...
Ok, now I've got a problem.
When my computer starts, it lags. a lot. And my CPU usage is 100%, generally. Then I get a win32 services error being closed by DEP (though I downloaded a fix for that and hopefully it's finished), and after a few minutes my computer stops acting slow. If I try to...

I keep getting that whenever I restart my computer. Also, accessing 'My Computer' takes an obscenely long amount of time. Loading photoshop is also slow.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Whatever the generic host process is (excuse my...
