    Have Ubuntu VM Set Up

Last time I installed Ubuntu (in a VM also, needed to test an app port) the installer is so good in autodetecting everything, that I really don't know what you would do to "learn" linux. I cut my teeth on linux by trying to set up all the hardware, and by the time i figured out how to get it all...

Replacing Vista with XP on new laptop

I wanted to say the same thing, but I refrained, in light of his "stain" comment - quite clear what the attitude is.

Replacing Vista with XP on new laptop

Pecisely. Add to the the SATA issues on most new laptops, meaning that you will have to slipstream them on to the XP cd, etc, means that you should just plump for another stick of RAM and leave vista as it is.

    Vista Serach

Possibly, can you tell me what the Adobe Reader problem was? I had to add "%1" in the CLI arguments to get a slight improvement, but as documented on the newsgroups this fix seems to "expire" after a while. My notebook is C2D 2.00Ghz, with 2GB RAM so I don't think it was the a case of a...

    Vista Serach

Bummer. I actually have Office 2007 as well, but I am using 2003 since I found 2007 to be slow and laggy doing certain things (opening excel files for one - I made a thread about this some time ago).

    Vista Serach

I've just diabled access to Windows Mail, nothing. I have also checked the file associations, and all the messages are correctly linked to Outlook. It still doesn't work though. I can't use Windows Mail since I get my mail from a company exchange server.

    Vista Serach

One of the reasons why I love Vista is the search function - click on the orb, type and it's there. I am terrible in organising my emails, so I often have to search for one to find a bit of info. Now, when I do this in Vista, it finds the mails and displays them in the "start menu". Problem...

    Very irritating thing in Vista

I find the user experience in Vista a lot better than in XP. I'm not holding my breath, if I was any less productive in Vista I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to switch back to XP. However it is faster and more stable than XP was for me, so it is staying, and I hope by the time SP1 is out this...

    Very irritating thing in Vista

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, I also used to use XP with excatly the same domain settings and I never experienced this lag. I see now that it is a known bug, well, fingers crossed that it gets fixed soon then. I can't imagine going back to XP after using Vista.

    Very irritating thing in Vista

Have Vista Business, and am part of the domain. When I am on the company network, everything is 100%, machine is snappy and brisk (its a 2.00Ghz C2D, 2GB RAM HP notebook BTW). When I am NOT connected to the network (i.e. at home, client, etc), and I click on, say, Computer, or Documents, I...

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

Sure, but there is no way I'll remember that :) Now if one of you guys points it out in the thread, I get a nice little email telling me to check the thread and I definitely get to see it ;)

    Why do people hate Vista?

Looking at businesses is hardly any indication of what we are discussing here. The fact that they will not upgrade has more to do with bottom lines that anything else - i.e. they have to calculate in training time for support personnel, training sessions for users, transitional downtime (setting...

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

The two hotfixes are clearly marked in the list of the updates, so one can remove them this way too, without going back to the system restore. However I've been stress testing the machine for 2 days now and no problems with the patches.

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

Anyway, can I just ask the "official" guys to give us a heads up when the two hotfixes are available through WU? I want to know when they are available, to be able to ascertain if WU will see them as installed already or not. Thanks.

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

No prob, I don't have to wait for anything since I have it already and I can draw my own conclusions when it comes to a bunch of hotfixes. I am also not "blaming" you or anyone else for anything, all I did was say that some people don't mind taking a "risk" and running a beta of a patch, and...

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

I'm all for debate and questions. I've even asked some in this thread. But the people I am reffering to are not asking any questions, they are going "No way, I'm not installing this, ecverything is fine etc etc" That's not a discussion, and not constructive.

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

What's the big deal - no one is forcing you to install them. The OP made a post informing people, not asking you to install it. If you want to wait, great, your choice, but what's the point of posting things like "Why should I install it"

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

Thanks, but what I actually meant is, let's assume that these make it to WU, in the rollup form. Also suppose that they bump up the version to indicate that it is the final release. Now, I check WU - will it tell me there are no new updates for my system (cos I installed the beta) or will it...

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

Just one question - when these are officially released, what will Automatic Update do on the machines which were patched using this beta version? Will it overwrite them, or see them as already installed?

    Why do people hate Vista?

I must say that I have followed this thread very closely, since I was hoping that someone will come up with a intellingent and logical argument against Vista. The only logical argument so far is put forth by the people whose HW doesn't work under Vista (or it doesnt' work propely), and they...

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

Sure, I can understand that. I for one am not worried to install this, I remember running the beta of SP2 for a long while before it came out with no problems, and this is far from a beta.

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

Whatever, wait if you want to, I've installed it and the machine is a lot snappier, not to mention that the silly "calculating time remaining" bug is finally gone. Great stuff, thanks to the OP.

How do I change Music/Pictures folders?

It is my personal machine, but you make a very valid point - do I really need to be joined to the domain? What are the benefits (the cons I have experienced many times). Thinking about it, the only tangible benefit that I get is that my documents are always synced with the domain so I don't have...

How do I change Music/Pictures folders?

Ok, so could I change it on the domain server? How would I do this? Rant: I don't get why the hell it restricts me from moving stuff around on my own machine, just cos I am a part of a domain!!!! Fsck!!

How do I change Music/Pictures folders?

I do have a location tab, but I don't have any options to change it - i.e. it shows me a full path (which is on the server, in my user folder) but I can't move it to anything else.

How do I change Music/Pictures folders?

I am a part of a domain at work, and as such my documents always get synced with the server. Music and Pictures are a part of Documents, but I don't want them to sync and stay on the server (for obvious reasons) so I have created foders C:\Music and C:\Pictures and this is where I put my stuff...

    asghost - CPU hog??

This process routinelly hovers around 20-30% CPU time, however it is dormant most of the time. I know it is cognisance blah blah blah, but what does it do? There are no effect whatsoever if I kill it. This is on Vista Business.

MS Office 2007 - my perception or is it really slow?

Did all the updates, still very slow. I am not the only person having this problem, newsgroups are full of it and it is a documented issue - it just doesn't have a solution. Deleting items from XLStart doesn't help, playing with the CLI arguments ditto. Double clicking files, and opening them...

MS Office 2007 - my perception or is it really slow?

Not really, it is just as slow to open when I double click on it. It is hard to quantify what "a lot" slower means since it is so subjective, but it definitely is slower that 2003 - as you guys have noticed too.

MS Office 2007 - my perception or is it really slow?

Hi, Our company recently got the whole MSDN/MS Partner folder, and since Office 2007 was one of the CDs in the package I decided to give it a bash. At that time I still had my old laptop, AMD Turion 64 with 1GB of RAM, running XP Pro. Off the bat, I noticed that the responsiveness of the...

What would it take for you to switch to VISTA?

That's understandable, if you have old hardware it's the right decision. We can choose to be cynical about HW requirements of Vista (which are really not that high anyway, my laptop is hardly cutting edge), but the reality is that some cut off point needs to be set in order to strike a balance...

recommend Vista boot parition size on 320GB HD?

I do this on my laptop - simply because if I ever have to reinstall, I don't have to copy my music/pics/videos back from a backup location. On a desktop I agree, no point, just get a separate HDD for media files.

What would it take for you to switch to VISTA?

Already made the transition - at first grudgingly, since my new laptop came with it, loving it now, faster and more stable than XP.
