    First attempt with Mini ITX

My father has asked if i would put together 3 computers for his office. Doesn't have to be something massive, but would like to get 5-6 years out of these machines (hence why i've included an ssd to keep them peppy). I used mwave.com instead of newegg.com since the prices seemed to be overall...

    dual voltage 2.5" hdd

I have a Panasonic Toughbook that has a dead hard drive. I thought all drives were created equal and i could just throw another one in there. I was wrong and discovered that Toughbooks use 2.5" drives with 5V and 3.3V. Anyone know where i can get one of these kinds?

Do hard drives contain hazardous materials?

Circuit boards contain hazardous, heavy metals which makes up the electronic components. Doesn't keep me from taking them apart though:D

    IIS, perl, and html forms

I don't know when this stopped working. I just know that it isn't working anymore. Something is weird permission-wise and i can't for the life of me, figure it out. here is what i am troubleshooting with: <form id="form1" name="form1" method="post" action="test.pl"> <label>what...

What are you doing for your Win2000 machines?

I found a better way since M$'s registry changes are ridiculous. NetworkAdministrator has a patch for Win9x, NT, and 2000. I just made a wee batch file that applies the fix silently and applied it with Group Policy. I rule!

    Flight Simulator X Machine

The Strategy Guide for FSX states explicity that the hardware which FSX was rendered on is so powerful that consumer video cards that become available in 3 or 4 years will be burdened heavily trying to render FSX in full detail.

Windows XP Screen Saver won't start

I have half a dozen LCDs here at the hospital with burn in of the hospital logo which is the desktop background. HP1902 is the model. But when you're a 24/7/365 operation, that's what happens no matter what kind of screen.

What are you doing for your Win2000 machines?

Since M$ isn't making a KB928388 for anything W2K related, what are you doing to make sure your Windows 2000 workstations and servers are going to be updated? Flat out, i've been trying to use a combination IntelliAdmin's patch and Group Policy, but i'm not having any luck. How about you?

server for heavy duty webserver and database

HP has some grand servers for doing storage, but it depends on the kind of storage. If you can afford to use a SAN with fibre channels get DL580s or ML570s. If not, perhaps get some DL380s which are considerably cheaper, work just as well, they just don't have the capacity and expandablilty of...

    Active Directory on Win2000 Servers

We are using more sophisticated programs that pull groups from different OUs and it's just a PITA to recreate groups that already exist. If we go to native mode we can use group nesting and avoid the unnecessary bs of doubling group memberships with security and domain local and universal.

    Active Directory on Win2000 Servers

Isn't it true that the switch from mixed to native mode only affects NT4 Domain Controllers and *NOT* NT4 file/application servers? What i'm getting at is that my company thinks it is a bad idea for us to go to native mode since we have 4 NT servers still on the network. They are not domain...

I can encrypt files fine after importing the keys i need. However, i am unable to decrypt them. I can extract them using PGP (the gui version for Windows), but when i use gpg i get this error: c:\>gpg --decrypt "c:\crap\century.doc.gpg" gpg: encrypted with 2048-bit RSA key, ID FFF1B3EC...

    XP x64 and Netware Client

Novell doesn't make a 64-bit client (as of May 2006). Does anyone have any thoughts how to map a drive to a Netware server without using their client? The 32-bit client is very incompatible with XP64: IPX doesn't install, services don't start, NWGINA doesn't display during login, etc.

Smallest PDA-like device on the market

Some of you may remember back in the 90s the Star TAC. One of the accessories was a snap-on Contact Organizer that could also work without being attached to the phone itself. Is there anything out there, not necessarily a PDA (they are quite bulky compared to this), that can hold a couple...

    adding files into SQL 2005

Turns out it isn't as easy as i thought it would be. I'm comfortable enough adding data to tables (age, height, weight, favorite color, salary, etc), but adding actual files to tables has not been something i've done before. I assume i have to get an INSERT statement to take a file (.jpg...

    Gameport / Joystick / DB-15 adapter

Is there any such adapter that can adapt a DB-15 to USB? I can't get the device to come with a USB, it is a foot pedal for medical transcriptionists and *only* comes with the typical gameport plug that would normally go in a soundcard. If there is no direct adapter, is there a PCMCIA card that...

    Domain Controller replacement procedure.

Yes we have to use the same host names for both servers. Reason being that the MSI software is pushed from AD2 and some of the older MSIs require connectivity to AD2 to run certain programs. I'm feeling more confident about doing this now. Thanks everyone.

    Domain Controller replacement procedure.

    Domain Controller replacement procedure.

Currently i have 2 domain controllers, let's call them AD1 and AD2. AD1 is the schema master, global catalog, etc. AD2 is the Certificate Authority master. Both of them are still running Win2000 server, but i have 2 new HP DL380 servers that are going to replace these DL360s. What is the...

    Getting a new SID

If your just gonna use Ghost, it should come with a tool called Ghstwalk. When you run it, it will show you the current SID and will go thru the hard drive and registry and change the SID. It has something like a 1 in 50 billion chance of re-using the same SID. Not sure what the program uses...
