    Computer won't POST / Boot

Hi moforles, I have had problems with a couple of other Gigabyte MBs where similar things happened. In most cases, the motherboard was the culprit. In one case, the video card and power supply were also damaged. Each time, this happened using a case that had neon fans/lights. Don't know...

    posting problems. hang?

I don't have much experisnce with SATA, but it has to load the SATA driver before it can go to windows. Maybe the SATA driver got corrupted so it can't get to the hard drive. Try booting with the floppy disk (or CD) used to load the SATA drivers following the same procedures as you would use...

    posting problems. hang?

Looks like it is not finding a master drive. If you go to setup does it see the hard drive? I'm guessing this prob is related to the hard drive cable that was knocked loose. Make sure it is seated right, oriented right (red stripe should be on the side towards the power connector), and make...

Windows locking up/not coming up on startup

You might have just knocked something loose cleaning the dust out. Try reseating all the boards, check for loose cable connections, and make sure all your fans are spinning. Good luck! TD

    random rebooting

Sound card driver could certainly cause your problem. If that doesn't work then it is prob in your BIOS settings. Are you OCing anything?

Which of these companies would you buy a hard disk drive from?

Seagate - Over the years I've had failures from Fujitsu (?), IBM/Hitachi, WD, and Maxtor. Percentage-wise I've seen/had several IBMs (all failed within 3 years use), several WDs (but none recently), a couple of Maxtors, but NO Seagates of many used, some for 5 years. I stick with Seagate...

    No video/POST with upgrade

My bad - you already RMAd the MB. Your new 550W PS should be enough if it's a good one. The video card checks out OK. That pretty much leaves the case, RAM and CPU. Maybe you can get hold of a cheap AM2 Sempron to test in the new MB. If it works, then the X2 CPU is prob fried. Have you...

    No video/POST with upgrade

Try Slikster's suggestion and if it still doesn't work, I'd suggest RMAing the MB. Nearly every time I've seen a PS fizz, the motherboard dies with it. And your two PSs were clearly not enough for your system. I read that AMD suggests over 20A on the +12 for A64s. And that was before the...

    good low-end laptop?

I got my wife one of the Acer laptops. We like it much better than the Compaqs or HPs we've used. It actually has room for RAM upgrade with normal RAM and other niceties. Was a low-end machine (she's internet, office apps user). TD:)

Do I really need my back faceplate?

I once did a Red Green on one and covered the open space with duct tape to prevent kids from poking something in there. Worked fine. Looked like a Red Green job. TD

Is it worth it (or even possible) to upgrade my processor?

You are probably not going to be happy with a processor upgrade at this point. By the time a comp is years old, the speed is more affected by slower memory speeds, drive bus speeds and video. Yours is about maqxed out and adding a processor that can run faster than the other slower components...

Possible to use all old hard drive's in new PC?

You normally will have to erase the old drive to use it on your new comp. It might be possible to upgrade with a new motherboard/processor if you remove all motherboard-related devices from the device list , replace the motherboard, and then get the new motherboard drivers loaded. This is...

Help pick the right computer for my parents.

I have always had pretty good luck with Dell comps here at work (we ahve about 8 of them. We've not had very good luck with HP, although I hear they are getting better. Maybe the problem with the Dell was because it was a QVC special. I bet if you configured and ordered one from the Dell...

    Random freezing problem :|

Does sound like a hardware problem. I'd suspect RAM first. Could be timing - set too agressively or OCed? Or could be one stick not so good. Try running with just one stick at a time to test. Also check compatibility for MB and voltage settings. You could try increasing the voltage...

    Not so simple problem

I agree with the power supply concern. Just starting up could be enough power draw to cause problems if the PS can't handle the +12 load. I would check the jumpers on the optical drives. I have always had the best luck using master/slave settings rather than CS. Mixing CS and Master could...

    Need To Buy HDD Enclosure

I second the Bytecc recommendation. We have 5 or 6 of them here at my office and everybody loves them. All have their own power source and can be used with HDs or CD/DVDs.:)

    Computer cannot run Win XP

I second the PS replacement. Just make sure you get as much capacity on the +12v as you can. You have an extra drive and A64s use a lot of power. I've seen several problems with A64 builds including extra drives, fans where the PS couldn't handle the load. I believe AMD recommends over 22 or...

    Troubleshooting: emachine m5310

I'm not an expert, but if you're running XP, change the control panel/system/advanced/startup and recovery settings so it does not automatically reboot on errors. Then you can post what the blue screen says, or what kind of lockup happens. You also might get some info from the event viewer to...

new gameing computer 2 problems help needed

Yes, deeinc. I know, for instance, 2 sticks of 512M are slower than 1 stick of 1G, etc. But I don't know exactly where the tradeoff happens. Maybe someone who is more expert about this issue can explain better. But in your case, I think most of the issue is going to be whether the system...

new gameing computer 2 problems help needed

I agree with Xanis and Bob - There is a point of diminishing return on RAM where you are at the limits of the capacity of the system to access all of the RAM and the more memory slots that are filled, the more it slows down access to the memory. Maybe 3G would be a more acceptable tradeoff...

    Power supplies keep failing

Well we're off and running again with a new case, MB, video card and sound card. They weren't all bad but they were the last of the original components not swapped yet. I'm leaning towards the case being the problem. We'll see how long things last this time.

    Power supplies keep failing

Thanks for all the good info. We are going to put things in a new case, with new video and sound card also. I will also check out his power situation to see if it can be improved, or to see if anything that might be problematic is on the same circuit. Thanks again, and I'll let you...

Constant Crashing, can't find source of problem!

I agree with Big Lar. For a system with a 6800GT and 2 HDs and an A64 and an Audigy, your power supply, even though a good one, is probably not sufficient. I have a customer with a similar setup who didn't get things working well until we had a PS spec'd over 25A on the +12v.

    Is Maxtor really that bad?

I have built many machines and have seen plenty of hard drive failures. Almost every Fujitsu drive I've seen has failed. In my office we were 0-4 with IBM "Deathstars", only one lasting over 1 year. I saw several WD drives fail when they were having troubles with their first 7200 drives. I...

One of my IDE HDDs isn't seen in PC

I always use Master/Slave settings my IDE devices, and as long as they are set right, I've never had any problems. I don't know if it is certain chipsets or what, but sometimes drives just don't like to play well together using CS. That is probably the case on your other PC. And some drives...

    Power supplies keep failing

Thanks for the replies. Went from a 480 to 450w PS because the 450w PS had better specs, more +12v supply. Check out the specs on the PSs I listed and you'll see what I mean. And a decent 450w PS with good +12v should be plenty for this system. I have an almost identical one running at...

    Power supplies keep failing

Thanks for the reply. I haven't found any obvious bad caps. And I forgot to mention - temps all look fine - CPU @ 42 C idle, maybe 47 C at load w/stock cooler and MB around 37 C. Voltages have always looked good whenever tested. Any other ideas??

BF2 and some other games freeze my comp and the speakers continue with weird noise

I had a similar problem with my son's computer on some newer games. You are probably running asynchronouslly - FSB @ 333 MHz and RAM @ 400 MHz. This shouldn't be a problem, but some MBs just can't seem to handle it under intense operations. In my son's comp the only thing that finally...

    Power supplies keep failing

Has anyone seen a intermittent problem causing power supply, motherboard failure involving an Audigy 2 ZS sound card or a Logisys case with neons? I've built about 25 systems before for family, friends, work and I try to keep up with things pretty well, and have a US Navy electronics...

    strange hang-up during post

    Computer Problem

Something wrong with my WD800 80gb hard drive

I saw a comment on another thread that XP Pro won't let you format as FAT32. If that's what you are trying to do, you need to do it some other way, amybe using the software from the HD manufacturer. Otherwise, it sounds like you should be able to format from within XP.

Which internet browser do you use?

At the risk of getting laughed at, everyone in my family uses Netscape. Mostly because we use Netscape mail (no Outlook or OE vulnerability). I dislike all the extra junk in Netscape and hate their homepage, but we've had very few problems with spyware, etc.

    Computer stability problems

Your hard drive issues sound like the drive is almost full or needs to be defragged. When it slows down during a large file xfer it's probably swapping. Try a disk cleanup. ME is good at fragmenting a drive, especially if you were crashing a lot.
