Windows 10 served to 75 million devices

Windows 7 had 60 million in 2 months. The Windows 8 number includes copies sold to OEMs to be placed on computers later, same with Windows 7 actually, Windows 10 is 75 million *actual* installs and activations of Windows 10, most of which were upgrades. Source: this weeks Windows weekly #428.

Apple Watch reviews are in: Best smart watch, but smart watches are unnecessary.

There are no "must have" 3rd party apps in my opinion. The apps you will regularly use are likely either communication apps (Messages) or maybe fitness apps (Workouts). The watch works best when you are dealing with notifications that come to the watch, not you digging into the app. Then you...

Save up for a iPad Air 2 or iPhone 6+ 128 GB?

This man speaks the truth. 6+ is crippled by RAM. I will not be surprised to see the iPhone 6 become the $99 phone and the 6+ fades away into the sunset to be replaced with the 6s+. Oh, and the 6s will happen too.

12.9" iPad Pro with 2732x2048 screen is "confirmed"

One thing I don't understand is I don't see how delaying an update to the iPad Air 2 just to push the iPad Pro is supposed to increase sales of all iPad products overall in future quarters. Some people absolutely do not want or need a tablet larger than the current iPad Air 2. And the lack of a...

Why don't phone manufacturers just sell phones on their main website?

Until the subsidy model goes completely away (rapidly happening), even 0% financing of a phone over 24 months ends up being cheaper than buying outright and putting the charge on your credit card. The strength of retail outlets like Best Buy and Amazon selling truly carrier agnostic phones has...

How are the older (Air, Mini 2) iPads performing these days?

2GB RAM and multi-tasking in iOS 9 are reasons why I wouldn't recommend less than an iPad Air 2 these days. It's clearly going to be the next "iPad 2" model in terms of longevity.

Xbox 360 and XBone which cpu has better single core performance?

360 and PS3 were both such boondoggles in spending money to one up the competition that a) both lost tons of money at release and b) in order to make up money, the generation was extended by at *least* 2 years if not more. The benefit of a faster realization of profit by Sony and Microsoft is...

The official Nintendo NX rumours and wild speculation thread

If Nintendo really is sitting on 18 billion in cash, then there is zero need to do anything drastic like PS3->PS4 where you greatly correct the mistakes of your predecessor in an attempt to win the market. So Nintendo can continue to make money bit by bit, but it won't be "sexy". They will...

Surface 3 , Surface 3 Pro, or iPad Air 2?

I would try Surface 3 after Windows 10 is pre-loaded onto it in ~3 weeks. 8.1 is an ok operating system, but features like Continuum in Windows 10 really smooth some of the pain points. Plus, I feel like app launch of modern apps is a *lot* faster.

How likely is it that we will see more powerful consoles for VR?

When you take a look at the specs Oculus Rift recommends vs the likely price of Morpheus (maybe $200, probably $300), I don't see it "exploding" in sales. Doing VR right with the visuals the public probably expects takes a *ton* of GPU power if you want it to be fast, movement to be fluid...

    "Fastest" phone?

While this question is often asked, it's actually not the question you needed to ask. Why? 1) This question only applies to Android phones. With the iPhone, you get what you get. 2) This question only applies to non-Nexus Android phones. If you want pure Google, you get what you get. 3)...

ipad 3 compared to iPad Air 2

The longevity of most iPhones is such that by the time they hit their brick wall, you've already upgraded to something else. The only true issue is the 6+, which I hit the brick wall daily, due to the 1GB of RAM causing apps to be kicked out of memory at a rather quick pace. This has always...

ipad 3 compared to iPad Air 2

The 1GB RAM on the iPhone 6+ pains me. I should have kept my iPhone 5 and waited another year. Sigh. Like you said, yes, there are absolutely certain iOS devices you should not buy brand new if the name of the game is longevity. iPhone 5c and 6+ are probably the first iPhone devices to reach...

    Some basic questions on iPad

You should not be swiping up to kill apps unless it is misbehaving. Apps that are killed are effectively dead to the OS (get no push notification, cannot schedule local notification, no geofencing, no iBeacon support, no location tracking, etc...)

iOS apps can now be 4 GB.

iOS doesn't run out of memory. It kicks out apps that haven't been used in a while to free up memory for new apps. However, with newer phones, especially the 6 Plus, that happens *really* frequently, to the point that at most 2-3 apps reside in memory at once. In addition, Safari is a real...

Xbox One - Buy now or wait?

I'm wondering if Microsoft intends to continue with the Xbox One without ever updating the hardware via revision to support HEVC/HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 so it can support 4K streaming. Plus, at the same time, Blu-ray 4K is coming out this year which also needs those standards. Good chance Sony will be...

How come the iPad is still more popular than the Surface?

If the Surface Pro 3 actually sold 2 million units last quarter, then it's doing pretty well against the MacBook Air (which with all Mac sales last quarter at 5.7 million means it's going toe-to-toe). As for the iPad itself, Microsoft needs to come out with a smaller 8" tablet running the...

The iPhone 6 is apparently the only "secure" smartphone available currently.

The can compel you to use your finger, I don't think they can compel you to use the "correct" finger any more than you have to tell them the pin code to your phone. Of course, you will still suffer the consequences as they may hold you in contempt, but that does not mean you are guilty. In...

    [ VR-World ] REPORT: FIRST PICTURES OF SONY’S SLIM PS4 LEAKED

Do people suddenly think that the PS4 is going to get magically smaller from a 28nm -> 20nm die shrink? The PS3 only got smaller after 3 years because Sony a) dumped onboard PS2 EE-GS chips b) 90nm -> 65nm die shrink and c) removed space taken up from having a memory card reader, extra USB...

What Are the Hallmarks of Good / Bad Code?

Writing "good" code is a skill. I don't think there's an easy way to get there without experience, and that's really only gained by working on projects either at a job or on your own. Like all things, you must actually DO the thing you want to improve on, not just read about it in a book...

    Iphone 6(now) or Galaxy S6(wait)?

The iPhone 6 and definitely 6+ is flawed with the limited 1GB of RAM. It's pretty terrible. Apps that were recently open are closed because Safari causes such tremendous memory pressure. Heck, if you have a podcast app playing in the background at the same time as browsing a page in Safari (or...

CNN Money names T-Mobile as Tech Company of the year; Investors not happy

T-Mobile's CEO said it best, he's garnering good will by doing things that everyone in the industry must eventually do. For example, the hocus pocus that previously happened around 2-year contracts and $199 is unsustainable, especially when it's clear that phones are going to last longer than...
