Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

I think the key to the airline industry is that more than one airline can run out of an airport. That gives you all of the benefits and workings of capitalism (competition, choice, etc..). Things like subways, there can by their nature be only one. But I see your point. The true...

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

Yeah I understand how it works, I suppose I should have been more specific, in that I was referring to the ticket price. It seems to me that private ownership would create a deadly spiral. Higher ticket price, less riders, less revenue, raise ticket prices again, continue until bankruptcy...

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

But a quite necessary one. I grew up just outside Washington, DC. You don't drive unless you absolutely have to. The traffic is terrible, there's nowhere to park, and I doubt there is much anything that could be done about it without knocking down a whole bunch of stuff. And that is with the...

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

Well in my view both sides are a little short on sources on this one. Then again, some people here realize this is more an exercise in principles and ideas than cold hard facts. Nothing wrong with stating your opinion, just recognize it as such. And realize you may not have all of the...

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

Well in a standard democracy, I'd say elect someone who thinks like you do, and for a while that's how I saw the Democrat/Republican balance working. Democrats would spend, raise taxes, enact programs in the public good. Then it gets out of hand, the Republicans get voted in, cut taxes, cut...

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

Addressing 3, I tend to think of taxing more like everyone putting money up to build a swimming pool everyone can use. My problem with the current structure, is the swimming pool costs 3 times as much as it should, because the guy in charge of all the money is buying beer and whiskey for his...

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

I think we need to first see where all of this money is going. And herein lies the problem. Figuring it out is a complete mess. 100 Billion more than a peace-time DoD. For some reason, the budget for the DoD doesn't include money for actually using the military, so we have to throw another...

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

This to me makes it rather obvious then where the money is flowing. Business is in the position to protect their profit no matter what, because they can just pass on the costs as they need to.

    Abstinence message goes beyond teens

Why do they need all of this money for what amounts to getting in front of people and telling them "QUIT FORNICATING! IT'S GONNA FALL OFF!"

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

Well from my understanding of it (which isn't all that studied..), the Constitution doesn't outline what can or cannot be spent on, only who is to authorize the spending. The Constitution only says that congress has the power of the purse, not what to do with that power. If you take the...

Illinois govenor wants to jack taxes

I have a question. In the two days I've been reading these forums, I've seen all kinds of taxes bashed. So is it the belief of everyone here that they've never seen a tax they've liked? The good old less government is better, and less funding is less government? Or is it just dislike of...

Gas Thread:8-22-07 Gas stations owners file lawsuit alleging price fixing by Saudi owned Refiners in U.S.

Ok, first off the new wing would be the Department of Homeland Security. Maybe I should have been more specific on that part. Shadow government, I probably should have left out, it was more of a reference to something I read about how intelligence functions are quietly moving into Dick...

3-7-07 Republican Mississippi Governor would rather see his citizens starve than raise taxes on Tabacco companies

Point taken on the home/public difference, although I do have to add I live with chronic bronchitis due to my family smoking like chimneys as I was growing up. But someone living alone, truly does not affect anyone else, so you're right in that case. Also, it's notable that the same moral...

3-7-07 Republican Mississippi Governor would rather see his citizens starve than raise taxes on Tabacco companies

I think the difference between tobacco and other 'sin tax' issues, is that tobacco is a public health issue, not a personal health issue. Drinking requires you to do something stupid in addition to putting the bottle to your lips to cause a problem for others, but the very act of lighting a...

Is there anything wrong with a Presidential candidate campaigning with his cabinet?

Well, maybe it doesn't have to be specific people that a candidate names, but they could outline what their criteria will be for selection. At this point, I'd be happy with a statement to not appoint people with tight Big Industry connections to oversee the Interior... or Arabian Horse...

Wal-Mart thread II:10-3-07 Judge Awards Wal-Mart Workers Another $62 Million for Lost Break Time

Thanks - That's quite a lot to sort through, mind giving me a pointer where to start? Anywhere you've summed up? I've been grappling with this one in my mind for quite some time, and can't seem to think of a solution that works and doesn't create some super-exploitable government intrusion...

PETA to Al Gore - meat eaters cannot be environmentalists

Udder chaos  No PETA generally kills animals off they think are in bad situations. So I imagine they'd gas all of the cows or something... bovine concentration camps and all that. But don't eat them.

True. I think Americans would be a lot better off if we could learn to live within their means and wean ourselves off the credit.

U.S. No Banking thread:4-19-07 Democratic led congress to fix "broken" system

Under normal circumstances, I would write this off as what I call a stupid tax. Go over the limit, pay the fee, remember next time. However, 47 charges for 3 events? Don't you think that's excessive?

3-7-07 Republican Mississippi Governor would rather see his citizens starve than raise taxes on Tabacco companies

I would have no problem with the gas prices staying the way they are if it were part of a comprehensive plan for these companies to use the profits they reap to prepare them and us for our future. However, I get the sneaking suspicion they're just lining someone's pockets.

Is there anything wrong with a Presidential candidate campaigning with his cabinet?

I would go for it. When you get that high up in power, the most important choice you have to make is who to put in charge of what part of the government. And that has been Bush's monumental mistake (well, one of...), that being cronyism. It's important to have someone that understands that...

Gas Thread:8-22-07 Gas stations owners file lawsuit alleging price fixing by Saudi owned Refiners in U.S.

Well you have to pay for things somehow. Cut taxes all around, create a whole new wing of the Executive, not to mention Cheney's off books shadow government, and launch two wars. Biggest deficit ever in pure dollar count, and it's getting there in real dollar value as well. And of course...

Gore's 'carbon offsets' paid to firm in which he is a chairman

You're gonna have to explain that little gem, because I don't get that at all. So you're saying that as long as one coal power plant is running out in Estonia (to name a random country), that we're doing just as much damage as our whole polluting megastructure we have in place now? You can't...

    France... Buncha idiots...

And we all know how well ad-hoc laws go. You can't make a law as broad as that and think it won't be applied to other things. Their intent may be to put an end to happy-slapping, but the effect will be much worse than what they're trying to end.

PETA to Al Gore - meat eaters cannot be environmentalists

I hope PETA gets the message some day. Humans are omnivores for a reason. It may seem excessively cruel, and I definitely don't agree with the factory-farming way it's done today, but we eat animals. And all of the rewording of our relationship with animals into an addiction and habit and...

    France... Buncha idiots...

I do happen to think they over-legislate everything. With regard to the happy-slapping silliness, why can't they just use this recorded evidence of assault to punish the people doing it if that's their goal? They could just as easily see people on the street slapping people and get them for...

Gore's 'carbon offsets' paid to firm in which he is a chairman

I don't understand what the big deal is myself. He put his own money into his own company. As far as the hypocrisy angle, I don't think it holds much water. His house runs on 100% green energy. So, at this time, the only real effect of him using a lot of energy is him paying a lot of...

    France... Buncha idiots...

The first thing I think of when I read about this law is the terrorist tactic of beheading and then televising and posting the video on the net. Maybe France didn't want to mention that angle of it for fear of angering their muslim population.
