I'll try burning my copy of Windows like you did. The disc is the only thing left I can think of as I just bought a new Sata hd and had the same problem.
UPDATE: Didn't work. :-) Also removed video GeForce 256MB video card and hooked up to onboard video. Unhooked everything.
I burned the ISO SeaTools boot CD with DOS, ran the tests on the Maxtor 40 GB hard drive and it found no problems. The drive is good and I'm afraid to buy another hard drive and have the same problem.
The 40 gig appears to work well and I can drag files to it from Vista. I've run all kinds of tests on it and it passes so it is good.
I'm going to work on this for awhile though. I've unplugged everything and will try again. I could kick myself for not building a system like I have done...
Thank you for responding. Yes, I did disable the Vista HD . Formatted and wiped out any partitions. Did this several times from different sources including the Maxtor utility CDRom. I've tried installing XP maybe 7 times and spent hours.
New HP Pavilion desktop with Vista Premium preinstalled on a 250GB SATA HD.
I have installed my old Maxtor 40GB IDE/ATA HD for dual booting.
Note: one is SATA and one is not.
Both drives are recognized in BIOS (CMOS) and in Vista.
I can drag files from Vista to it.
I am...
I just installed a EVGA GeForce 1700GT with the downloaded driver from nVidia.
Vista 32.
Evga beta 101.41.101.41 Mar. 2, '07
nVidia 7.15.11.65 Feb. 10, '07
Quite a large difference in driver numbers. Should I stick to the drivers from the nVidia site?
Thanks.
If Rosie wasn't so darn sexy and hot I'd have to vehemently disagree with her comments. It's just too bad she's not even remotely interested in me because of celebrity status and "preferences".
I use the free MOZY 2GB online backup http://mozy.com/ every few weeks.
For things that change daily like my calendar, appointments, and documents I use a SanDisk Cruiser with the free U3 RoboForm2Go for my passwords and automatic logons.
All my programs, photos, music, video, etc. I burn...
<edit> Here is the article as it applies to gaming:

There is an article I read online recently that showed the results of using Ready Boost. If you search for it you will see even using all of a several gig pendrive is...
My new HP PC came with Vista and LightScribe installed. I bought some Memorex LightScribe DVD+Rs, the only brand available locally. Works fine. Not overly thrilled about using it though but for DVDs I don't want to attach labels and permanent markers don't look pretty. Takes long time for the...
That is an excellent reference page. I bookmarked it. Looks like the 7600 GT consumes only 36W.
Interesting and confusing to me is the link to the OuterVison eXtreme Power Supply Calculator which turned up a suggested power supply for my system at 332 watts. I don't get it. The graphics...
Those standard ATX measurements are exactly what my HP 300w PSU is. :-)
I was wondering if the 7600GT used a pci-e connector. I assumed it didn't, therefore less power draw.
Sorry I have been cross posting.
Beau
Hopefully for Huai and me the 7600GT is less power hungry than the 8800GTX. If I have any problem I will get a new PSU.
Would turning the graphic options down in a demanding game lessen the chance of a hard crash?
The HP tech, likely in India, e-mailed definitely do not install any other PSU than an uATX.
Must be playing a trick on me. LOL
By looking inside my case I don't see why any standard ATX PSU won't fit. Over the years I built my own systems but when my motherboard started getting flaky I...
Your guess is as good as mine Haui. :-)
I don't know if running a demanding game will stress the power supply more. If yours works out I may just buy the video card like you did and hold back on upgrading the PSU. Keep me posted please.
<edit>
Oh,one more question. On the box does it state...
So Haui, are you upgrading your power supply to handle the 7600GT? I've read that Dell might use a proprietary power supply that may take a bit of work getting a regular PSU installed. Likewise for my HP. I just found out my HP uses a uATX PSU which is 1.5" shorter than an ATX (see my new post...
My Vista graphics Index is only 3 which is holding back my system and I would like to upgrade my video card due to some gaming needs.
HP tells me I have a 300w form factor uATX PSU with input voltage: 100v-240v and output of 300w.
I think I read somewhere that the only difference between the...
I've go almost the same exact system and was wondering the same. I'm worried my 300 watt PSU on my new HP being adequate but I am looking for a mid-range card. My onboard nVidia GEForce 6150LE isn't cutting it and holding my Vista score down. I'm partial to ATI. I don't need to play the latest...
