A better distro for laptop with only 128MB RAM

Have you tried Puppy 4.0? It runs from RAM and feels super fast on my P3 650 laptop. All codecs are installed out of the box, so no configuration needed. It's not very user-friendly compared to Debian/Ubuntu (in terms of tweaking the desktop, adding apps, etc), but considering your low...

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

I'm curious which processor would be the better bang for the buck with the 4coredual: Quad 6600, or E4700. Has anyone tried either with this mobo? I'm currently running an E4300 @ 2.0 Ghz. I wonder how high the E4700 would go in this board? I'm guessing at least 3.0 Ghz? Quad 6600 probably...

Thanks, complain. I ended up going with gskill ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231098 When I went back the next day, the Adata was not listed on Newegg, so I got the gskill, which was $40 off instant savings, plus free shipping. So it came out just a few bucks more...

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

Hi everyone, I'm still chugging along with this board and am finally able to upgrade my DDR 1GB to DDR2 2GB. I'm not up to speed on what this board likes...I see A-data DDR2 800 for $36 on Newegg (2 x 1GB). This is a great price. Any bad experiences with this ram on this mobo? Any other...

What can Linux do that Windows cannot?!?!?

Fair enough...you make a good point. I guess I've forgotten how many good freeware apps there are for Windows. I guess the point I was trying to make is that you don't have to worry about shareware in Linux. Would you agree with my summary?: he one thing that Linux can do that Windows...

What can Linux do that Windows cannot?!?!?

Everyone has different computing needs, so the answer will vary by user. For ME, the main thing is that Linux can do ALMOST everything I need, but for FREE. I cannot afford to upgrade my Windows OS right now (I'm at Win2k still) so Linux allows me to have a modern OS that performs better, is...

    ASRock 775Dual-VSTA

Actually, I think this is a known problem where if the cpu frequency is set to "Auto" it runs the FSB at 256 instead of 266. Just get it out of auto and manually set it to 266 and you'll be fine.

    ubuntu question

I thought that too when I first installed Ubuntu. Then something went wrong with one of the codecs it installed and I couldn't uninstall it through Automatix or Synaptic. My audio codecs weren't working right and I couldn't fix them. After I reinstalled the OS, I realized how easy Synaptic...

Sorry, I'm using 1.80c bios. This forum makes you type in username and password to change your signature (even if you're already logged in) and I lost it and don't feel like getting a new one generated for me because I have my browser set to remember it for login. So my browser logs me in...

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

Yes, it works in Linux...but like I said, it ignores any overclock I have set up. I can be running at an FSB of 290 (2.6Ghz)...verified. The minute I turn on Speedstep and boot into Linux, every cpu reporting tool says I'm at 1.8Ghz (1.2Ghz when Speedstep drops the multiplier). It appears the...

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

I'm the wrong person to ask about ram stability. :-) With my E4300, I cannot even run stable @ DDR400 200Mhz except when in a 1:1 ratio (ie, at my cpu's stock speed). If I attempt an FSB of 266 and DDR400 (ram at stock 200Mhz, but with a 4:3 divider), system is unstable. I am forced to run...

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

The 1.80c bios is a user-modded bios. The website it's on is in German, so I am guessing they are techy German enthusiasts, with no ties to Asrock. I believe the 775dual-VSTA's first few bioses had these options enabled. Then Asrock disabled them for all future updates and the 4coredual-VSTA...

http://www.pc-treiber.net/download_kategorie_108.html This is a DOS flash. Just replace Asrock's bios file in their DOS download with the one on this site, and when running the flash, type their filename instead of Asrock's. Use at your own risk.

    ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

Sorry it took so long to get back. I tried cat /proc/cpuinfo in the terminal and it gives me the same cpu speeds that conky does. So it appears that when I enable Speedstep in the 4core-dualVSTA (1.80c modded bios), my overclock disappears in Linux. Bummer. I was hoping Speedstep would...

Want to run a Linux distro and WinXP on the same system

Why not unplug the XP drive, install Linux on the 2nd drive, plug XP drive back in, then use the motherboard boot manager. I guess it depends if your mobo has a boot manager. On mine you hit F11 when you turn the computer on and you get a menu with all drives (floppy, cd, hdds) and you select...

Hmmmm. How are you measuring cpu speed in Linux? I wonder why my system removes the overclock when I enable Speedstep? Weird.

How do I go about learning linux?

When Ubuntu 7.04 came out in April, I decided to give it a try. I was still a Win2k holdout and couldn't afford XP, let alone Vista. I too have a family and felt guilty having the same copy of Win2k on 3 computers...but felt handcuffed because finances are so tight. I then got an old work...

Intel Speedstep work in Ubuntu, but un-does my overclock

Yeah, I'm sure I've seen reports of people overclocking their systems and Speedstep throttling their cpu speed down from their overclocked speed. In my case, it's ignoring my overclock and throttling the speed down from its stock speed. This is why I'm posting here...hoping someone can tell me...

Intel Speedstep work in Ubuntu, but un-does my overclock

I enabled Speedstep in my motherboard bios and was happy to see it supported in Ubuntu. However, when I enable Speedstep, I lose my cpu overclock. I have an E4300 running at 2.4Ghz. It runs @ 2.4 with Speedstep disabled, but when I enable it my cpu runs @ 1.2 Ghz throttled, and 1.8 Ghz (my...

How to get Intel Speedstep working in Win2k?

Is there a way to get Speedstep working in Win2k with my E4300? I have it working in Linux on the same system (albiet with some issues I will post about in the Linux forum), but it doesn't work in Win2k. I read something I found through google about going to Control Panel -> Power Options ->...

    Conky cpu temp w/Asrock 4coreDual-VSTA

Thanks, drag. That was an awesome post. I finally got it figured out. Unfortunately, temp1 and temp2 that 'sensors' detects turn out to be Northbridge and case temps. I started comparing sensor temps between Windows and Ubuntu using a known good program in Windows (Speedfan). Speedfan...

Help me pick a Linux distro for a very slow computer

I've got an HP Pavilion in my garage that I use to play mp3s. It's currently running Win2k (very slowly) and I'm looking for a good Linux distro to replace Win2k on it. All it will be doing is playing mp3s. I might occasionally use it for research/reference on the web, but that will be rare...

    What's your OS??

Just made the switch to Ubuntu 7.04 in April and I'm dual-booting into Win2k occasionally for things I haven't had time yet to figure out in Linux. I'm guessing within 6-12 months I will be completely Microsoft free in my home, with the exception of my wife's computer. I'll eventually get her...

    Conky cpu temp w/Asrock 4coreDual-VSTA

Thanks, and sorry. I'm using Ubuntu 7.04. I just installed lm-sensors, ran sudo sensors-detect, and said yes when it asked me if I wanted to add to /etc/modules. Then when I ran sensors -s it said it couldn't find anything. I checked in /etc and there is no 'modules' folder there. There's a...

    Conky cpu temp w/Asrock 4coreDual-VSTA

I'm trying to get Conky to do a cpu temp readout via ACPI on my 4coreDual-VSTA and I'm getting a reading of 0 C. I've been told that this doesn't work with some motherboards...perhaps my Asrock is one of those? Anyone have any luck getting this working on a 4coreDual-VSTA? Thanks.

Windows 98, Old Hardware, New Internets :)

Arkaign, I think it'd be interesting to stick a PCI IDE/SATA controller card and hook up a modern hdd. I agree that the hdd controllers of the day combined with a hdd of the day don't do the old system any favors. What video adaptor does this guy have in his 200MMX? An upgrade there...

    Memory timing issues

I recall reading about it on a leaflet that came with my ram. I think I also saw it on a .pdf on their website. The memory is 2-3 years old now, so that pdf file may or may not exist anymore. Or maybe I have defective memory. ;)

    Memory timing issues

Not necessarily true. I have a pair of 512MB DDR400 modules that are rated 1T singly, and 2T if used in pairs. Corsair XMS3200c2 (if my memory serves me well).

FIRST OFFICIAL DX10 GAME DEMO OUT

I've been a Win2k holdout for years now. This is the first app I've tried that doesn't support Win2k. I got an "operating system not supported" message when trying to install the demo. Given I don't actually have time to play games anymore, I guess watching a video of the demo in action is...

    Memory timing issues

Can you clarify: Have you had this RAM all along running at 2-3-3-6 1T? Did those timings stop working after the cpu upgrade? Have you tried 2-3-3-6 2T? Some motherboards can't run @ 1T @ 200Mhz and some memory can't run at 1T in pairs (only singles). Don't be so quick to blame the RAM...

How can I tell if Ubuntu is using both cores of c2d
