    dell studio hybrid wireless issue

Probably a problem with the compatibility between the Wireless N card and the Wireless N router. Try connecting to the router and configuring it to only go with wireless G or B/G speeds and see if your speed goes up

House with potentially 6 active computers at once

I agree with ModelWorks... if you have an old PC, PFsense would probably be your best bet. It will do a better job of QoS then a hacked home router, but I would recommend purchasing a Wireless Access Point or a good wireless router to act as your wireless connection, but disable everything but...

Best Wireless Router Location in a House?

Usually the higher the better, but if you want access in your basement you might want to put it higher up on the first floor and away from anything that could cause interference

    Confused about NAT/PAT

I have another CCNA question about PATs. If you have two computers on a network and they both try to go to www.anandtech.com at the same time how would that work? Wouldn't they both try to go to IP:80? and who decides what port the client and server are going to communicate on, the NAT...

    CCNA practice question

yeah I get that a lot on these questions... really frustrates me when I see stuff like that. I am looking at the cisco practice questions now, and according to them 127.16.71.43 is a private IP range and 10.215.34.43 is not.... how am I supposed to study well for this when I keep finding stuff...

    CCNA practice question

so you would say that the answer "Networks are segmented into multiple collision domains using bridges for CSMA/CD networks." is correct even though the question says it is wrong?

    CCNA practice question

Ok, I am doing some practice questions for my CCNA test tomorrow and I rain accross a question dealing with CSMA/CD and it asked me to pick 3. One of the ones I picked was "Networks are segmented into multiple collision domains using bridges for CSMA/CD networks." Another question they had...

Cripes. Didn't know cable could go so fast!

I have 10 Mb too and most sites will max mine out.. I use Ubuntu for my OS and every time I download updates for it, it goes at about 1.2 MB/s, which should be around my max.

is it good to shutdown your router every once in awhile?

It would be nice to know what the router is hooked too.. if it is a home router.. go for it if you are worried about it Wow this thread has gone on for days without any reaction from the starter. and I love his join date of 12/30/1999 was he worried about the Y2K problem?

consumer router vs. cisco router vs. building your own router from an old computer

Matters what you are doing on your network... you mainly just need a switch that can handle all the drops you are going to have and then get a router that will handle the number of users. I would suggest the old computer being used with pfsense or smoothwall. Cisco routers are pretty expensive...

Please answer my dumb question about RAM

I forgot the rules on all that stuff, I think most of the time there is a range in speed that is needed and it should be supplied in the manual of the Motherboard.. you can also look up the vendor of the PC or Motherboard on the Crucial and Kingston sites to see what is recommended. They...

100 MBPS fiber internet - What hardware do I need?

Wow.. I don't think it would be possible to use up all of that by yourself. The people you download from would probably be your bottle neck or the hard drive on your computer! I do not know about Mikrotik but pfsense is pretty good.. any old computer should work and it would be cheaper then an...

Router > Bridge > Router setup?

hmm does the other network have DHCP? you should get the DHCP server from the other network through the bridge. Try connectoin a computer directly to the bridge to see if you have a connection. If it is not DHCP, then you will need a static IP for that other subnet. Try connecting to that IP...

    Cisco IOS Software

I am taking a CCNA class right now and decided to get a used 871 router to practice on. I noticed that it has the ability to have optional software, but I can not find out how to add it. I see places to download it from the cisco site, but it says I have to register, so I register and it still...

    seperating two domains

Not only is it possible, but one of the main functions of a firewall. You just need to set up three interfaces on the firewall (one for each LAN and one for the internet) and set them up for each segment or segments. You then have to go to the settings of the firewall and tell it what you want...

Please help me test my ftp server

I had the same problem one time when I installed a firewall.. I could access it fine inside my LAN but outside I would be able to login but get no file directory. I noticed that if you turn the FTP client off of Passive mode it would work fine, but a browser will not do this. I found out my...

I need to block ps3/w!! and other useless devices from my router

    Wi-Fi Location Finder?

I do not know how accurate it is but there are companies like AirDefense that can do this by adding devices everywhere and triangulating wifi signals, but I am not sure how accurate it would be.. probably within a couple meters.

    Speccing a router

Routers have specialized processors that are optimized to work for networking situations. You can not compare them to computers. It is even difficult to compare two computers by Ghz since a new generation 3.0 Ghz processor Intel processor works a lot faster then a 3.0 Ghz P4. If you are...

which is the best wireless access point under $1500

I half agree with that.. mainly cause a lot more can go wrong and you have to find a place to put the PC.. can't really hang it on a wall or ceiling. You could get an appliance like you can get from Soekris and use a Mini PCI-E card to turn that into a wireless AP and it would not be that big...

    Speccing a router

Not sure if there is a reason why you would pick GNU Zebra but it seems like they have not worked on that project since 2005. Try looking at smoothwall, Clarkconnect, and pfsense those are always being updated and have tons of extra feature that make it even more useful

Best way to Monitor Network speeds on home network

if you go to the Task manager by using Ctrl-alt-Del you can go to the networking tab to see your percent utilization.. just multiply that by 10, 100, or 1000 (whichever one of those three is your network speed)

    Bittorrent slowing down connections

Matters the Router.. some of the new Dlink routers have QoS which you can set to match your games so your game traffic goes before his bittorrent traffic. Also if you have an old computer laying around that you do not use, you can use a program like pfsense to turn it into a router, but you...

    Something wrong with my LANspeed

    Broadband router to a switch

It would work any way, but if you do a lot of file transporting (meaning multiple computers at a time) its possible that there could be a slowdown from that one wire going to the router and the 3 on the router and everything else on the switch.. The switch will give all the computers 100 Mbps to...

Can I use a gaming adapter

    Blocking Bittorrent Traffic

With what you have I believe blocking those ports and blocking the popular pages would be your best bet. You need an application filter that can examine the packets on your network and tell if it is a bittorent packet, but unless Optenet can do this you would need another piece of software.
