Norton 2009 seems to be showing promise

As a many-year Zone Alarm user, I switched over to NIS 2008 last year because I got tired of the pop-ups and poor Vista support from ZA. Just installed NIS 2009 a few days ago and I must say, the install was fast, no problems at all, and it is VERY light on resources. Kudos to the development...

Need Backup solution for my p/c

I use Acronis to image my system drive on a monthly basis and recommend it for full images. Syncback SE from 2Brightsparks (http://www.2brightsparks.com) works great for my data drive, though. It synchronizes directories very nicely, and I have it scheduled daily and it runs without a hitch...

Can I work, surf or play when I am doing an antivirus or antimalware scan?

It's fine to work/play while the scan is running. The only issue is performance. On my C2D E6600 system using Norton Internet Security 2008 there's no noticeable performance impact using the machine while scanning.

Vista Sleep: Sometimes works, sometimes restarts

If it's really driving you nuts, it might help to remove the sound card and try running with onboard audio for a little while and see if the problem goes away completely. I know that isn't a good solution (after all, you have a separate sound card for a reason!), but at least it might at least...

Vista Sleep: Sometimes works, sometimes restarts

First, make sure S3 sleep is enabled in the BIOS (at least that's the way the setting is expressed in my Asus P5B-Deluxe MB), but either way, that's not what's causing the crash. I had almost the exact same problem for many months. Have you updated your Creative sound card drivers to the...

Best security suite for VISTA- 32 bit

I've had good luck with NIS 2008 as well (minimal performance hit, "silent" with no pop-ups, no problems with any viruses/spyware - all on a fast machine with a lot of memory, though, so YMMV), but if you like ZoneAlarm and have an up-to-date license, they have a public beta out there that's...

    Backup Software: Suggestions? Details inside

I use SyncbackSE and love it. It really is a synchronization program, not a "backup" program. It doesn't create a backup file and doesn't create disk images (so not a solution for backing up your bootable system drive). It's great, however, for creating an exact replica of your My Documents...

Disapointed with Vista on new laptop, can I istall XP?

I know it isn't the answer you want, but I'd make the move now to new programs. It'll be less headache and you can take better advantage of what Vista and the laptop offers. Don't buy into the "XP is better" crap. It's better on old machines, maybe, but Vista is the better choice on a laptop...

    resuming S3 standby from USB

Unfortunately, that's as far as my knowledge goes. My Asus P5B Deluxe came set to power the USB ports during S3. Maybe someone on the Gigabyte forums (assuming they have them) or someone with more knowledge of your specific motherboard can help? Sorry!

    resuming S3 standby from USB

There are specific settings within Device Manager for the Mouse and Keyboard under the Power tab for each. Ensure the box to "Allow this device..." is checked for those in addition to the USB Root Hub. If that doesn't work, you might have to change a setting in the BIOS or a jumper on the...

Senior Citizen Security and Utilities With Vista

I highly recommend the Norton products (NIS 2008 or Norton 360) for a novice. You'll read a lot of crazy Norton stories about resources, etc., but I've now used Zone Alarm and Kaspersky's suites in addition to NIS 2008 and I find NIS 2008 to be the least resource-intensive (on Vista) and...

    Vista Sleep Issues

Make sure all of the latest reliability patches are installed from Microsoft. They deal with a lot of the issues. Upgrade your video drivers, too. If that doesn't work, try sleeping and resuming without all of your USB devices attached. If that works, plug one in at a time until you find the...

Computer won't resume from S1 or S3 sleep (Vista)

Definitely apply all of the latest "reliability" patches available from Microsoft. Many of them deal with increasing the reliability of sleep transitions. It seems that the issue is mostly in the handling of USB ports and graphics cards, but they solved the problem for me. If all of the...

Warm: TiVo temporarily reinstates $400 lifetime subscription for Series3, HD

I have an S3. From what I've read, the major visible differences are the OLED display on the front (tells you what show(s) are being recorded), fancier "glo" remote, and larger hard drive (250GB vs. 160GB) on the S3. The S3 also allows any eSATA drive to be connected to expand storage...

Good Program to Backup selected folders

Not sure if you're looking for something free, but if you're willing to pay a bit, I find SyncBack SE to be a great, straightforward, powerful backup/synchronization tool. Lots of options, but small and focused on what it's supposed to do, doing it very well IMHO. www.2brightsparks.com...

Which is better? Kapersky Internet Security or Norton Internet Security

After avoiding it for a long time, I switched from Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite for Vista (which is pretty buggy and bogs things down a bit) to Norton Internet Security 2008 and have been very happy. It's completely unobtrusive, everything works flawlessly, and no slowdown at all. I was...

    Vista Sleep Issues

Does it actually finish getting into sleep mode? Usually the power light will blink instead of being steady (or something like that, depending on your machine) and the fans will shut off (again, depends on your settings and machine). If it *is* getting into sleep and it's crashing on resume...

cant resume from hybrid sleep in vista

Hi - I've been stuggling to get Hybrid Sleep working well on my P5B Deluxe-based machine. The flashing Power button should bring you out of suspend (just push it as if you were turning the machine back on). If that doesn't work, it's possible the machine locked up going into or coming out of...

Vista wakes on its own and locks up

Just to close the loop on my own thread here for posterity in case someone else is having the same issues, I've finally gotten sleep working reliably (five straight days, 20+ sleep transitions) by removing my ReadyBoost-enabled USB drive (I have 4GB of memory anyway, and didn't want to risk...

    *** Official ASUS P5B / P5B Deluxe Thread ***

Hi - I'm running Vista 32 on a P5B Deluxe and recently began having trouble with the sleep mode. It seems to randomly lock up while it's asleep. I'll come back to the machine and the power light will be solid instead of blinking. No fans or power to the USB ports or signal to the monitor...

Vista wakes on its own and locks up

Recently, Vista began to "wake" from sleep on its own, seemingly randomly, and lock up immediately, without the monitor even turning on. I've tried using the keyboard to launch stuff and watch if the hard drive light works to see if the issue was with the video only (I know there have been some...

WMP 11 Album Art not downloading?

Thanks very much for checking! Actually, I'm hoping that's good news and that it's a temporary server issue and not some weird problem on my side! I guess I'll wait it out a bit. Thanks, again, for taking the time to check.

WMP 11 Album Art not downloading?

WMP 11 Album Art not downloading?

I'm in the midst of re-ripping my music collection in higher quality (I love big, cheap hard drives!), and as of this morning, WMP 11 is no longer automatically downloading album art. It gets album info just fine, but doesn't retrieve any art. This happens both on ripping and if I choose an...

    Clean install with upgrade?

Maxemo - if you have a valid copy of XP, you *can* do a clean install without any workarounds (I know because I did). Just put the Vista DVD in while XP is running. You'll be given the option to wipe the drive and do a totally clean install from there. The downside is that I believe this...

When do you see Vista 64 being more main stream?

Frankly, if it didn't happen with the release of Vista, I'd say we're at least five years away from "mainstream" 64-bit OS use. A lot of software would have to be rewritten to provide significant advantages in a 64-bit world or there won't be any "burning platform" for moving. IE, MS Office...
