YMMV; BestBuy Geek Squad UPS on clearance

Test yours first. I do have one EA500 that works fine with a stepped sine wave UPS. Update - the 2 of mine that don't work with stepped sine wave UPS's are EA500D, which I believe are newer ones made by Delta. The 1 that does work is an older EA500 (without the D) that I believe was made by...

YMMV; BestBuy Geek Squad UPS on clearance

I ended up replacing my 2 EA500's with Corsair power supplies. I found a statement from one of their employees in an on-line forum (don't remember which one) that their PS's with active PFC work with stepped sine wave UPS's. I don't have a large sample size, but I've tested the 2 I bought and...

YMMV; BestBuy Geek Squad UPS on clearance

Yep, some work, some don't. I have three EA500's, and only 1 works with simulated sine wave UPS's. I have 2 CyberPower, 4 APC Back-Ups, and 1 old Belkin and 2 of my 3 EA500's refuse to work with any of the UPS's. The 3rd EA500 works with all of the UPS's. I tried to get Antec to replace the...

YMMV; BestBuy Geek Squad UPS on clearance

Best Buy in Webster, TX had one returned 1285 in a beat-up box left - and they wanted the regular shelf price for it.

YMMV; BestBuy Geek Squad UPS on clearance

You might want to give it a try and return it if it doesn't work. I actually have one Antec EA500 that works with a simulated sine wave UPS, so I'm 1 for 3. You might get lucky. For my 2 that don't, I found it to be cheaper to replace the power supplies than to get a true sine wave UPS...

YMMV; BestBuy Geek Squad UPS on clearance

This is a very good price, but note that these do not produce a true sine wave when on battery. Some computer power supplies with Power Factor Correction don't like anything but pure sine wave. For example, I have 2 Antec Earthwatts 500s that won't work with a CyberPower 1500VA. However, a...

    ***DEAD*** Fry's q9550 & ecs mobo $229.99 B&M

Webster, TX Fry's is bundling retail box CPUs (mine is a SLB8V). I haven't put it together yet so I don't know if the board has a recent enough BIOS to support the chip.

Intel E8400 $159 with free ECS motherboard

Interesting... I've purchased 2 E8400 combos at Fry's, both with retail boxed CPUs. The first was several months ago, and the second was this week (w/ ECS G31T-M for $160) . This is at the SE Houston Fry's (Webster).

From what I understand, technet doesn't have any development tools, e.g., Visual Studio. You need an MSDN account to get those.

FRYS Intel E8400 Box + ECS or Gigabyte MB $269.99 or $309.99

I would have personally preferred an ASUS P35 MB, but the Gigabyte has a good reputation, too. There seemed to be plenty at the SE Houston (Webster) Fry's.

    Hot? or Not?

The HD channels are already in digital form, so the I'm fairly sure that no encoding is needed. I believe that the card just saves the data to hard drive as a transport stream.

    Radeon HD 3450 for $49.99 + shipping

I get the same result with audio. The audio device installs and claims to be working, but no audio from the TV via HDMI. Unfortunately, I don't have another TV or HDMI equiped computer to test with, so I can't be certain which device is at fault. I do know that my TV will only accept...

    Hot? or Not?

The HD Homerun does look interesting, but I'm sticking with internal cards because of the flexibility. I have 3 computers with HD TV capture cards, and they can all independently watch/record without impacting each other or the home network. I don't know how well you can stream HD content over...

    Hot? or Not?

To add even more confusion, *some* of the different models of 1600 *can* receive QAM, which is digital HD from a cable box. However, I'm fairly certain that this will only get you non-copy-protected HD cable channels. I don't have cable, but I would expect the premium HD cable channels like...

    Hot? or Not?

Yep. The only advantage of HDMI over DVI is that HDMI will carry audio over the same cable. Depending on your setup, this may be a nice thing or a "don't care". Well... that is if you ignore the whole HDCP/DRM subject

    Hot? or Not?

I'm not certain what you mean by dual tuners. I believe that the 1600 and 1800 are both dual-tuner cards (one NTSC and one ATSC). From what I can tell, the primary difference is that the 1600 is PCI whereas the 1800 is PCIe. What I would really like is dual ATSC tuners on a single card. I...

    Radeon HD 3450 for $49.99 + shipping

My first attempt did not work, and in trying various drivers I've hosed my system so badly that I can't even get sound from the motherboard jack. This is with 32-bit Vista Home Premium on a "fry's special" ECS motherboard (945GCT/1333). I'll probably reload the box with XP this weekend on...

    Radeon HD 3450 for $49.99 + shipping

Video editing and rendering do take a lot of horsepower, but mostly in the form of CPU (more cores is better) and memory. I think that the 3450 would be suitable for that type of work, but that would be a strange machine - high cost multi-core CPU, lots of memory (and 64-bit OS to take...

    Radeon HD 3450 for $49.99 + shipping

If you mean standard definition movies and DVDs, then even a 3450 or 2600xt are overkill. Even integrated video is fast enough for standard definition. If you do need high definition, then either of the two cards above should work fine and you can buy strictly on price.

    Radeon HD 3450 for $49.99 + shipping

If I were going to play games on it, absolutely. The passively cooled HD 3450 is very much a niche product. It seems to be the best fit for a budget HTPC box that will only be used for DVDs and HD video.

    Radeon HD 3450 for $49.99 + shipping

Card arrived today - no HDMI adapter. Bummer. The card itself has one VGA, 1 S-video, and 1 DVI. It comes with an S-video to composite adapter, an S-video to component pigtail, and a DVI to VGA adapter. ATI/AMD sells their DVI-HDMI adapter here - $7.00 + shipping ($5 and some change in my...

Thanks for the link. I took a chance and ordered the 3450, so I'll know sometime this week if it includes the adapter. Gotta love newegg fast shipping  This should work great in my new HTPC box - quiet and not much load on the PS.

    Fry's Combo Deal: E6600 Core 2 Duo & ECS P965T mobo for $299

According to my local Fry's folks, they usually have an "upgrade" deal to a better quality motherboard for their combo packages. It typically won't be quite as good a deal, but not bad. You just need to ask.

Right now I have a mixed bag. You might say I'm rebuilding from the bottom up. Left and right front are an ancient set of large 3-ways with 12" woofers made by Utah (they are probably long out of business by now). They still sound amazingly good considering their age. They were pretty good...
