What version of Winamp to install?

I've been using AIMP2 for the last few months, a bit leaner than Winamp. http://www.downloadsquad.com/2...ernative-media-player/

A UK business customer will be able to claim the VAT back, which is historically why computer stuff is generally priced ex VAT. Doesn't help Joe Public though. :(

    compatible?

The 8-pin header is wired such that a 4-pin connector will fit and deliver the right voltages, OTOH a quad is current-hungry so sharing that current through twice as many wires is better. But my board only has the 4-pin connector and plenty of people are using it with quads.

    Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 (rev. 2.1)

The Tuniq, unlike the Ninja B, comes with a S775 backplate mount so you should be OK. For Ninjas, consider buying the Thermalright LGA775 Bolt-Thru kit if you have a S775 board.

    E2180 overclock!

I find I need 1.400V in BIOS for 2.9GHz, it's very much YMMV.

Source for DIY 3.5" bay enclosures?

I've also done it for years no problem, most recently with a Seasonic S12-430. It's just taking advantage of voltage being potential difference, so I can't understand how problems can arise, however the PSU is designed, providing the power supply is powering a system and not just a 7-volted fan...

    Partitioning Penality

One reason I've always partitioned has been to reduce defrag and virus check times (the Programs and Data partitions rarely needed defragging). Now these will run in the background so it's not so useful, but having your data on a separate partition to the OS certainly is, it allows for easy...

best no frills overclocking mobo for C2D rig?

I see you have the GA-P35-DS3L which is a tad cheaper when RAID is not required. Same quality otherwise.

Performance Enhance option Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3x mobos

According to the first post in this THG thread, With my system, set 'Standard', I found my 'Static tRead Value' which he equates to tRD was already auto-set at 8, so looks like YMMV with the RAM used, etc. But I do agree with him it's better to leave on 'Standard' and tweak the individual...

Thinking of getting E2xxx or Q6600 for new build

For a budget machine the E2180 with DDR2-667 is sweet, the slight extra over the E2160 is saved on the cheaper memory (lower FSB with 10x multiplier). A problem sometimes found with integrated graphics is that it limits overclocking; may be better with a budget card.

Also does plain FTP. I have a link to it in the 'SendTo' folder, so right-click on a file and 'Upload'. Just the job for uploading images you want to use in forum posts. Excellent program. The Fastone image capture program is now shareware but the older freeware version is still around. Main...

    cpu heatsink not hot???

If the bits of a heatsink you can touch get hot it's a sure sign the fan is broken. And your core temps would be in three figures. Heatsinks aren't made of superconductor and at some uniform temperature, there's a steep thermal gradient from hottest next to the TIM to much cooler at the upper...

Can't get past 3Ghz on E2180 with reasonable voltage

And I need 1.40V in BIOS (1.36 showing in Speedfan, etc) to get 2.9GHz stable and considerably more to go over 3GHz. This thread suggests trying 1.4625V (in BIOS) for around 3.2GHz, worked for me. QFT. Overclocking a cheap processor over 50% is not a given. But on default the P35-DS3L will...

Can't get past 3Ghz on E2180 with reasonable voltage

I don't see an answer on the RAM voltage, but the 1.86V showing in CPUID-HM looks low. I'm under the impression this is 2V RAM?

Best Motherboard for the price for moderate Overclock?

Scythe Ninja B is only a tad behind the very best, but considerably cheaper and comes with a good fan. Arctic Freezer 7 Pro is great bang/buck but a bit noisier than the 120mm-fanned sinks when under stress. You say HTPC, is size a constraint?

    Q6600 Overclock Advice

That's for any CPU with Tj=100C, Speedfan uses Tj=85C in the calculation so 15C low. Try the 4.34 beta, the bug claims to be fixed.

Anybody Else Have This Problem with Gigabyte DS3R ?

I've the DS3L (which looks to have the 4-pin in exactly the same spot) and a Ninja B, the only real problems were getting my hand in to plug in (I had to remove the top fan in the Antec P182) and the fact that my Seasonic's lead (older S12-430 model) was a tight stretch. The difficult part will...

CPU Fan speed control with latest BIOS on Gigabyte P35-DS3

I've the P35-DS3L Rev.2, latest BIOS (F7, 29 Nov 07) and the board's original F5 BIOS give very satisfactory thermal speed control to the 1200RPM stock Scythe 3-pin fan on my Ninja B. Idles around 700RPM, about 1150RPM under stress-testing. The Smart Fan 'auto' setting should correctly supply...

    Voltage questions

CPUID (and Speedfan) round the voltage they measure to two decimal places, CPU-Z shows three, but all three are taking the same raw data and doing the same calculation, and they both show the figure at the CPU (after droop). There's also a thing called "spurious accuracy" very common with...

How much HD space do I need for a swap file?

Win 98 remembers your last swap file size, so it's less useful to set one yourself, but if your work/play load varies a lot from day-to-day it might help, especially if you can optimise it into 1 continuous block with Norton SpeedDisk. Run System Monitor to check your max swap file useage, add...

Best virtual memory settings for 256mb ram

As usual, the crap that possibly applied to Win 3 is still being put out as Truth. For 98+ 1. Monitor your swap file with System Monitor during a "busy" session to find *YOUR* needs. 2. Add 20% for a bit of headroom, set as minimum. This isn't essential; Win 98+ remembers the...

Is the "7 Volt Trick" dangerous?

Rather than go right down to 7v I'd suggest a few diodes in the fan wiring. Each diode drops 0.6v, so 4 will drop the voltage to 9.4v. Still reduces noise a lot, fan less likely to stay off, more air flow. I use cheap 50v 1A silicon diodes, make sure diode end bands in red wire point to fan, in...

Can I use a bath sealant instead of a silion sealent for my peltier?

Many cheap/domestic silicone rubbers release acetic acid (vinegar smell) as they set. Not recommended around electronics. Look for an acid-free type.
