    ZALMAN ZM850-HP or ZALMAN ZM1000-HP

The difference in price isn't that bad between the two actually which is why I'm still on the fence. I've learned the hardway over the years that the PSU is not a part you skimp on.

    COOLER MASTER HAF

Thanks PCTC2, that was my main concern about the case. Unfortunately I have to decide between good cooling or good sound insulation, I haven't found a case that does both that'll fit the hardware I want/need to run.

    ZALMAN ZM850-HP or ZALMAN ZM1000-HP

Ok so I'm building up a whole new rig. Only thing that'll be transplanted over will be my hard drives. After researching out various high capacity PSU's I think I've settled on the Zalman's. They seem to give a good cost vs silent performance. However I'm not sure just how much power I really...

    COOLER MASTER HAF

So I'm building a new comp for the first time in like 6 years. My current case isnt going to cut it so I need to build up in a new case. After researching a bunch of cases the COOLER MASTER HAF looks to be decent but I'd like to hear if other people have this case and can give me some feedback...

Changing the Vista Power Button to log off

The problem with shortcuts is the user might miss them, delete them, move them etc.. plus vista has a habit of eating icons at times (don't know how many times I've re-enabled the recycle bin at home). However a desktop background is something we can manage directly through policy's. The problem...

Changing the Vista Power Button to log off

Heres a thought, would it be possible to create a custom desktop with just a giant button on it that says Log off? The main problem we're facing is just students and teachers not paying attention and locking/sleeping the computer instead of logging out.

Changing the Vista Power Button to log off

Fantastic, thanks for the ideas everyone. Sadly the shortcut idea and the classic start menu aren't really options. The gpedit idea tho may have a strong possibility of working, I"ll play with it at work tomorrow and see what comes of it.

Changing the Vista Power Button to log off

Hi all, hopping some Vista guru can help me out. The school I work at has just moved to Vista and those of us that maintain the lab have begun to experience a new kind of headache. We're trying to see if we can change the behavior of the start menu power button. I know how to change it to...

    Gaming Motherboard Recommendations

The DDR3 thing is for trying to extend the life of the build as much as possible. Depending on where you go, you'll find benches showing anywhere from 0-15% increase in performance. Its not about whats got the biggest number and price tag. We've been through the discussion and its pretty much...

    Rootkit Detectors

So what are people using for their rootkit detection? I know Avast and Spybot now sport them on their free editions. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

Yeah I used to have to uninstall Norton on a fairly regular basis when I was a tech rat. Once you knew what you were doing it was easy but it still took about 40 minutes to clean out all the crap it left behind and repair the damage it did to Windows.

    Spyware/virus removal question

Sometimes it'll help clean somethings, others it'll ignore, it'll depend on the malware. I know I always prefer doing virus scans from either a bootable cd or a clean system. Check out some of the bootable projects like Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, great tools to work from if you don't have...

    Best FREE Antivirus / Firewall

For a free anti-virus Anti-Vir and Avast make pretty solid products. For firewall check out Comodo and Online Armor. Both offer a free one that on http://www.matousec.com/ beat out the paid versions. I've been testing out both firewalls and personally prefer Comodo. Online armor seems to...

You know that hadn't really occurred to me. You make a good point, the whole teach a man to fish and you feed him for life kind of route. I'll make mention of it to them and see if thats something they'd be willing to try out.

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

lxskllr Sadly, I cant even say they have anyone that could be called a guru. Best they have is my friend who got them to install AVG so they at least had an AV system. And that was based off the fact that I threw it on her home computer as a temp fix when her McAfee subscription died off...

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

(What was supposed to be a quick reply got very long. So grab some popcorn and get comfy) This brings up a question. Should someone just deal with a few false positives? In general, the people who come this this forum or post in it are fairly high in their tech levels. I don't think any...

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

Personally I never let the AV decide for me either. However most people stick with the defaults and that means the AV does what it feels it has to, thus missing program files. This is why I'm concerned with false positives since this whole project started as a way of testing AV's for a non tech...

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

I generally run in to the same issue, primarily password hacking tools. Almost every AV I've tried flags that. What I got surprised by was the HIGH number of false positives I got with the AV software I'm testing now. AEC Trustport was rated pretty high, in part because it uses 4 or so Antivirus...

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

Sadly no I don't have a series of test beds to run the AV tests on. While I could throw viruses at my system I dont have the tools for realiably testing it out. For the raw data, that I'm leaving that to sites such as av-comparatives.org, AV-Test.org, etc. I figure why reinvent the wheel if it...

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

What I'm curious about is, if the high level of heuristics were responsible for its higher detection ratings, what throttling down the heuristics would do for its detection ability?

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

I actually did look in to Antivir. Their paid version tested very well, better in general than Nod or Kaspersky in fact. What turned me off from it though was the high number of false positives it produced. While I could probably research out a false positive or two, the people I'm researching...

    Suggestions about this Worm please

The A-Squared forums are showing it as a false positive. It looks like they fixed the issue earlier today with an update, so I'd try running the update and scan again. Keep in mind anything running Heuristics can make a false positive, and quarantining your explorer.exe file is a good way to...

    Parental control/content filtering

One thing I did find that worked really was was Kasperskys security suite. They have a parental control built in to it that blocked almost all chat programs (installed or web). After adjusting the blacklist (with about 3 addresses) the only IM agent I found that it couldn't block was the one...

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

Lemon, I may have overreacted and for that I do apologize. So far I?ve been testing out Kaspersky and Comodo and have been getting VERY odd behavior since running them together. Aside from the rather massive system slow down that?s noticeable with Kaspersky, I?ve had programs hanging for...

Lemon, I realize your trying to make sure all the areas have been explored, however at this point you've now come overly close to insulting me twice. I am not dismissing these options out of hand, nor am I suffering from "mental laziness". Generally when a program will go to such lengths...

Actually I said Kaspersky had a conflict with Comodo because thats what Kaspersky's installed told me when installing. I've been testing out Nod32, Kaspersky and other various AV flavors via the 30day trials. I had just finished testing out Nod32 and Comodo. I uninstalled Nod32, rebooted...

Best of the Best AV, any suggestions?

Thanks so much everyone. It looks like we're narrowed down to Kaspersky and Nod32, depending on the firewall they choose. Unfortunately Comodo doesn't seem to work with Kaspersky, and I'm still waiting to hear back from Online Armor about an issue I've run in to. ~A
