    Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 POST issues

That would have been extremely helpful information before I bought the P5Q. :D Anyway, I'll remember this when constructing a secondary system with the GA-X38-DQ6. It's indeed weird that GEIL gave the wrong specification (both the sticker and SPD are 1.8 Volt, while on their site there is no...

    Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 POST issues

Allright, it might not be the motherboard nor the power supply, but the RAM! I have 4 GB of 800 MHz GEIL memory, and while it has a sticker on it specifying 1.8 Volt, I checked their website and was surprised to find out it's specified for 1.9 - 2.4 Volt. So I increased the voltage to 2.2 in...

    Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 POST issues

I ended up bying an ASUS P5Q Deluxe. It booted up fine... till I had to restart due to a driver update. Again it restarted several times before POST-ing succesfully. I think my heart skipped a beat, or two. Could you all post your power supply specifications? Thanks a bunch.

    Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 POST issues

This morning my system didn't want to boot at all (constant restart). :Q The issue definitely seems to be getting worse. I replaced the power supply with my old one, and after two tries it did start up properly. Then I switched back to the new power supply and the system started booted...

    Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 POST issues

Hmm, it's not very assuring that at least two people also have a similar problem. Interestingly, I think the problem got a little worse when I *upgraded* my power supply from a no-name 400 Watt to a supposedly high-quality Zalman 550 Watt. Maybe the motherboard short-circuits or pulls a...

    Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 POST issues

Hi all, My system behaves kinda strangely. After pressing the power button the fans rev up and just when you expect to see a POST screen it shuts down, only to restart a second later and do the same thing all over. Only when I leave it off for a while, it does the restart just once and...

    Nehalem release date?

Thanks for the link but it's not exactly the same. I just need a date to decise whether or not I'll wait, while that thread is more concerned about future socket compatibility. I want one as soon as it's available, that's not the question. But I'll buy a 1000$ Penryn if it's still a full 6...

    Nehalem release date?

I don't see any useful info there. Or are you saying this topic belongs in that forum? It's not just about Nehalem but about the motherboard as well. Anyway if a moderator wants to move it, go ahead.

    Nehalem release date?

Hi all, As we all know Nehalem is near finished, and officially the release is slated for Q4 2008, but I was wondering if any more accurate date is known? My workstation currently has a Q6600, and as I can use every bit of performance I'm trying to decide between upgrading to a Penryn now...

No audio: Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6, Vista 64-bit

I had an AC3 front panel plugged in when I booted the board for the first time. But I unplugged it for the Windows XP installation and still didn't get a sign of functioning hardware. Anyway, I'll probably just buy an X-Fi sound card...

No audio: Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6, Vista 64-bit

I installed Windows XP on a separate partition, but still could't get the sound working... Does that mean the hardware is broken or does anyone still have a last idea left that I could try? Thanks for all the help.

No audio: Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6, Vista 64-bit

Thank you! As far as I know the UAA driver is for XP only. Vista should already have it built in. That's why the Gigabyte driver page does not list a UAA driver for Vista. It's dissapointing that the latest Windows is still not free of driver problems. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet...

No audio: Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6, Vista 64-bit

Thanks for the information. I'd rather not reinstall Windows though, since this is a development system with quite a bit of software on it and many personal configurations (it costs me two whole days to become productive again). I tried Driver Cleaner 1.5, which was able to remove all Realtek...

No audio: Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6, Vista 64-bit

Hi all, I recently got a Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6, and while I'm quite pleased with this board I haven't been able to get a single tone out of my speakers yet. I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit (not a fresh install), and in the taskbar it tells met that "No Audio Output Device is installed"...

    Why DDR3?

I base that on the fact that four cores can easily demand more bandwidth than DDR2 can deliver. Are you playing silly? The slower the RAM, the higher your CPU usage will be. With more bandwidth, you'd be able to get higher performance.
  17. C

    Why DDR3?

Why DDR3? Because it's the only memory that can deliver the bandwidth required to keep a quad-core happy.

    Triple-core's

AMD will have single-die quad-cores much sooner. I've read that Barcelone will have four separate power planes and clocks, which should make it easy to completely disable a core. Yields of quad-cores will be terrible at first I think. So instead of throwing all those chips away they could...

    Triple-core's

I'm not talking about dual-dual-core (should have made that clearer from the start). Both Intel and AMD will be producing single-die quad-cores in the near future. Yields will obviously not be very high, and the percentage of single-fault dies they would throw away would be gigantic. So it only...

    Triple-core's

Look at the GeForce 8800 GTS. It's based on the G80 chip with four clusters of 32 stream processors, but one of them is disabled. And it's insanely popular. And it doesn't have to rely on a stead stream of partially defective parts. If you have more working quad-cores that's a good thing, and...

    Triple-core's

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone expects quad-cores with just one defect to be sold as triple-cores. They could just market it like a kind of Celeron, instead of throwing them away. With the Cell processor and GPU's it's also very common to have disabled components. This would give...

    ATI's Boundless Gaming is bounded

Who's going to win the 'physics war'? Intel. Then Microsoft together with NVIDIA and ATI. Seriously. The Intel Core 2 Duo has massive floating-point performance. You don't need anything extra for physics processing. Dedicated hardware is nonsense, there isn't a single operation that is...

    Dual-channel memory running single-channel

Yes, both modules are recognized as OCZ4001024ELPE with the same timings. What's slightly odd though is that the BIOS uses timings 2.5-3-3-5 when set on Auto while the SPD information sais 2.5-3-2-5 (and the stickers say 2-3-2-5). I tried to manually set the timings in the BIOS, but this...

    Dual-channel memory running single-channel

Hi all, I recently upgraded from 2 x 512 MB Kingston ValueRam to 2 x 1024 MB OCZ Platinum 2-3-2-5, and now it's running single-channel instead of dual-channel. I have an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium motherboard (nForce 4 chipset) with the latest (non-beta) BIOS, and an Athlon 64 X2 4400+...

People who own the Zalman Flower and Socket 939

For my ASUS A8N-SLI Premium I used a hairdryer to heat up the backplate. I don't think there's a risk of overheating it (unless your hairdryer is actually a flamethrower). I couldn't touch the backplate for a while after heating it for several minutes on the highest stand. When it was touchable...

Chipset: not touchable - ASUS Probe reporting 43?C

I'm still puzzled by milleron's temperatures though. Do you by any chance have a side-panel fan blowing straight onto the northbridge? A fan in the front meant for the harddrives that also creates airflow around the northbridge? A graphics card fan in the vicinity? Or just a high-speed CPU fan...

Chipset: not touchable - ASUS Probe reporting 43?C

I bought the Zalman 7700AlCu and Zalman 12 cm case fan. I first installed the case fan and disabled Q-Fan (everything running at full speed). Maximum CPU temperature was 43'C and motherboard temperature 37'C. I can now touch the northbridge. It only becomes uncomfortable after ten seconds. So...

Chipset: not touchable - ASUS Probe reporting 43?C

The A8N-SLI Premium has a heatsink on the voltage regulators which is roughly 2 cm high (the heatpipe of the northbridge ends here). Since the Zalman 9500 blows straight to the back I believe it would be adequate. On the other hand, it looks like a very big cooler and even though the weight is...

Chipset: not touchable - ASUS Probe reporting 43?C

It's the 7700AlCu I had in mind. My processor barely reaches 60?C with Q-Fan on and the 7700AlCu should perform equal to or better than the stock cooler. Interesting! Now that you mention it, nTune also reports it as 'System' temperature. So it's probably not build into the northbridge itself...

Chipset: not touchable - ASUS Probe reporting 43?C

Thanks for the information! My board isn't mounted upside down, but I only have two fans: the stock CPU cooler, and a 12 cm fan on the bottom of my power supply. I'm probably going to need extra airflow around the heatsink connected to the heatpipe. With Q-Fan on the CPU cooler creates only a...

Chipset: not touchable - ASUS Probe reporting 43?C

Hi all, I recently bought a new system with an Athon 64 X2 4400+ (overclocked to 2.4 GHz), and an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium. I primarily chose this motherboard because of the fanless chipset cooler. The CPU temperatures are excellent: 60?C at full load and with Q-Fan on. Noise levels are also...

    Dual-core NOW! or later?

Thanks Capt Caveman! If this is true then Cheesetogo was right-on. So what I'll do is get the cheapest Venice, wait a month or two, and if there's a cheap dual-core I'll buy that one, else I'll buy the 4200+ anyway.

    Dual-core NOW! or later?

Trust me, I know exactly what dual-core has to offer. And it's not during the programming that I'll see the benefits, but when running the multithreaded multimedia applications I develop. So I definitely want dual-core, no doubt about that. I was just wondering whether it would be smarter to...

    Dual-core NOW! or later?

Thanks for all the opinions! Although they are a bit confusing... ;) Anyway, I'm the kind of person who bought a Celeron 1200 MHz just for the SSE capabilities, while there were much 'faster' Athlons at that time which were just as cheap. I used SSE very intensively and I still don't regret...
