I have the P5E-VM DO (not the HDMI model).
I went to do the pencil mod and the layout was different from all the pics

On the "DO" board, the transistors (?) to...
I've had my q6600 for at least a year, runs stable at 3.0ghz.
Just wanted to make sure I had all the bios settings correct/good.
The parts-
q6600 G0 revision
Ultima 90 heatsink with scythe 120mm fan
asus p5k premium
OCZ DDR2 PC2-8000 4GB Platinum Edition Dual Channel...
I have the P5E-VM DO (same board minus HDMI). The vdroop is pretty significant. If I set bios to 1.3, I get 1.28 and that slumps further to 1.23 at load. That means for 1.3V you have to set the bios to about 1.37V. I'm using an e4500 with stock HSF so I'm just doing a light overclock from 2.2 to...
I don't agree.
Encoding video like x264, my q6600 can do 6-8fps where my e4500 does 3-4fps. That's a huge reduction in time for the average movie (8 hours instead of 16).
Pro Tools LE - all the RTAS plugins use cpu and things like reverb and convolution gobble up cpus. Having 4 cores vs 2...
The idle is fine but 72c is where my q6600@3ghz ran with the stock hsf. It was flakey and rebooted sometimes. I put an Ultima 90 with a slow 120mm fan and the temps dropped to 50c. Totally stable and very quiet.
3 sticks of ram "breaks" dual channel, so not a great idea there. That shouldn't affect stability though.
I would pull the heatsink off and look at how good your contact patch is. I always do that to see if the grease spread properly/evenly.
Do you have good airflow in and out of the case?
My x850 XTPE did that with an inadequate power supply (Enermax 350w). I swapped in a 430W Antec and it went away. I could also get it to stop by underclocking the card, which supports the idea that the PSU wasn't sufficient.
Then again, when you have buttery smooth, high fps, the tearing sticks out like a sore thumb.
The absolute easiest way to see tearing is to press just strafe left or right in an fps game.
You got the wrong card so that's worth complaining about. PCI-E slots can run at various speeds, 16x being the highest. The videocard is merely a PCI-Express part, the slot it goes in determines the interface speed. So don't worry although I would do something about getting the card you paid for.
Although the Phenom loses across the board, it's very close for x264 encoding and Crysis. Those are the two "killer apps" for many people.
The real problem is that although they come close to stock q6600, we all know the q6600 can be easily bumped up to 3.0ghz and then the Phenom gets...
I got the same easy overclock but the system wasn't stable. Random reboots, hard lockups in some games.
The core temps were hitting 70c+ at load so I switched the hsf to the ultima 90. Now's it's stable like a rock.
I get no performance boost from 7.10 to the hotfix drivers. I ran the GPU benchmark on both several times and ~32fps average either way (1024x768, shaders=high, rest=medium, no fsaa)
Can someone with an 8800GTS/GT with the latest drivers check this for me-
In the advanced properties, can you set a 5 digit refresh rate such as 71.928hz or does it still limit to 4 digits i.e 71.92hz? And can you check that it "sticks" if you go back in later or does it truncate?
I need...
Anyone that believes the Nvidia renaming thing is a "bug" is a total chump. This game is critical to position each company as the best value and will undoubtedly be a deciding factor for those upgrading. Any reputable hardware site is going to have to check image quality again to make sure the...
The Ultima 90 is the "mini" version of the Ultra 120 extreme. It cools only a 2-3c less and weighs almost half, costs less and actually fits most motherboards :) It
beats all of the old-gen heatsinks like the Tuniq and Ninja.
I just got mine today and with a Scythe 120mm my Q6600 G0 is idle...
A few comments-
The P5B is kind of old, you might want to consider P5K-E
You need DDR2-800 not 667 - I would get something like OCZ platinum rev. 2 ($90 plus $35 rebate currently)
Wait for the ATI 2950 pro. It's coming in a few weeks and will be faster plus support DX10
If you want to...
Well, I'm running a G0 with the retail HSF, overclocked to 2.88ghz
At full load with prime95 254
tjunction - 100C
cores ~70C
You should be running cooler with such a superior HSF and at a lower cpu speed.
I'm up in Canada so Newegg isn't a viable option.
I can get OCZ Platinum XTC REV.2 PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit
for $92 with rebate vs $155 for the Crucial Ballistix. Is it as good as the Crucial? I'll be using it on a P5K premium with a q6600...
The P5K deluxe is almost $100 cdn more than a plain P5K. Does it have more bios options for voltage tweaking needed for overclocking the q6600?
I'll be happy if it can do 3.0ghz.
I downloaded the p5pe-vm manual pdf and it doesn't show ratio settings for the ram, though the manual only shows when ram speed is set to auto. Maybe when you set it to manual it becomes available. On my P4c800 the ram divider is set by picking ddr 266/333/400 which creates 1:1, 5:4 and 3:2...
So little info available for this combo. I checked Tom's forum, Hardocp and ocforums and only the last has a thread, though it's brand new too.

I don't wanna get this board and find I'm stuck at or near default clock. That would suck.
Brutuscan:
I find the Ai overclocking rather worthless. It gets impressive sounding cpu speeds but it clobbers memory performance.
E.g - When you set to 20% O/C in the Asus Ai option, it adjusts the ram to 3:2. Mem scores tumble of course. So you get a nice looking
cpu speed but it chokes...
