    Basic C++ graphics framework?

    Yeah, just interested in Windows for now. My only thought regarding DirectX is it may be a little overkill for my needs. But of course, it is one of the industry standards... Any recommendations for getting started? I really enjoy figuring stuff out, but this is one of those things I just...

    Basic C++ graphics framework?

    I'm a competent SDE, but have never done much in the way of graphics programming. I'd like to make a basic game as a project and I'm looking for ideas of how to get started. I'm sure there are tons of C++ libraries out there which do what I need. I just need to be able to get basic...

    Good headphones for gaming?

    The HD280s are $70 at Amazon.com, which doesn't sound bad from what you say. I'm no audiophile or anything, but do want a decent set for gaming, so I'm not sure how big a difference I'd see throughout the price range. These are what I currently have, but they've taken a beating over the past...

    Any thoughts on the EH250's? I'm sure those HD280 Pros are better, but how big a difference would there be between those and these?

    Good headphones for gaming?

    I'm looking for headphone recommendations. Mostly play FPSs, so I'd love to be able to hear clear footsteps and stuff like that. I do prefer closed-back style to block out some noice, but I don't need crazy noise-canceling ones. I don't need a headset with a mic, just the phones. Any...

    New Build

    One of the things I always ask: What resolution are you gaming at? The cost of the GTX may be more than it's worth.

    Full rebuild, no upgrade. Feedback requested

    Especially with newer games, you'll want the GTX if you want eye candy. That kind of resolution is where the top end video cards really are necessary. I figure if you've got the money to drop on a 30" LCD, paying a bit extra to get a video card that'll drive it well is a good idea. Anandtech Link

    Do you really think this is a good combo? I'd be a bit concerned with a 8800 GTS 640 driving the 30" at 2560x1600.

    Can i blind myself with a laser mouse? & Will i notice a difference with this new mouse?

    It's not unpleasant. In fact, lasers used in mice use less power than LEDs used in optical mice. It's not like people get tracks burned into their desk from laser mice. You won't feel a thing.

    Question on Ram / Ram timing

    DDR2 generally has significantly higher latencies than DDR. DDR running at the same bus speed as DDR2 will be faster. However DDR2 is able to run at much faster bus speeds and at lower voltages. DDR3 will be the same again: higher latency than DDR2, but much higher bus speeds and lower...

    New Computer

    I'm running XP, so I can't say anything good or bad about Vista. Keep in mind if you want to use 4 GB of RAM, you'll need a 64-bit OS. A 64-bit version of Vista is the way to go there. Stay away from the 64-bit XP, far far away.

    1) P35 is the way to go. Nothing wrong with that board. 2) I think either of those 2 would be fine. Whatever you like best really. 3) Looks pretty good. There's no need to consider the 8800GTS 640 if you're running at 1280x1024. The extra memory is most useful for AA/AF at higher...

    Stock HSF will be fine if you're not OCing. Intel is not going to ship something designed to be used a factory specs if it does not work. What resolution are you gaming at? Just asking because that video card might be overkill. Sounds like you're not too worried about money though.

    Feedback/ Critique new system please.

    Full resolution for you is only 1280x720, less than the native resolution of a 19" LCD. You can get an 8800GTS 640MB for $350, where the Ultra would run you around $600. The 8800GTS is more than enough for your resolution. Save yourself the money now and in a year or so, you can buy a new...

    1080p is only 1920x1080, smaller than a 24" widescreen (1920x1200). A 8800GTS 640MB will be plenty for you for that. Future proof is pretty much a joke. You're better off buying a good card now, and another good card in a year or so if you need it. Edit: Just because you're using a 57" tv...

    Whats wrong with this build , if anything??

    The 2 reasons why newegg might not be the best. 1) If you're ordering a Q6600, there's no guarantee what stepping you'll get. 2) Somewhere else might have the same parts cheaper. zipzoomfly and clubit are common alternatives to check

    setting up raid-5 questions

    1. Depends on the controller. Most onboard controllers will just do the minimum of all. So you'd have 900 gig of usable space with those 4 drives. 2. You will need to reinstall everything. You're essentially formatting a large volume. 3. You'll have a single 900 gig drive.

    First Time Builder Looking for Help

    Check out the charts at tomshardware Link At your resolution, 1400 x 900, which is similar to 1280x1024 the difference between the 640MB and the 320MB is negligible, definitely not worth the $80-$90 price difference.
