I don't know about the Nvidia chipsets. On Intel ICH9R, the status of the RAID becomes marked as "degraded." You have to pop in the replacement drive and add it as a member of the RAID, and it should start rebuilding once the O/S is loaded up. The mirror process for a pair of 250gb mirrored...
Make sure all your drives are set for SATA-II (300) operation. This should be detectable by the Intel RAID software. Also be careful of bad drives; you may want to run a diagnostic on each of your tera's separately. We roll out Dell Optiplex 755 units at work all the time with 250x2 mirror RAID...
The manual says you can run it with 20+4. The 4-pin 12v plug is for extra power going to the CPU and is important. I have mine running on an Antec 80+ certified power supply. It pulls 80 watts at idle and 115 watts at full power, running 3d game demo. All measured with a Kill-a-watt meter.
That driver is for your ide hard drive to sata converter module. It should work okay without the driver as the Silicon Image module will just work in "compatibility" mode. I would recommend putting that driver back in to prevent any future disk i/o issues. It may also speed up your access times.
