Aha! Do you have any ideas how to circumvent that?

    Hard drive testing

It actually creates a file on the destination disk called Outfile.txt. I'm going to try another test which will copy lots of data from one disk to another using Karen Kenworthy's program called Replicator. It has the ability to time the file copying. To answer seeminglyrandom's question, no...

    Hard drive testing

I wrote the following little VBA program to test various drives in different computers. All the drives in my home computer test the same. I have two 150 gig Raptors in RAID 0, one 150 gig Raptor X for C drive, one new Velociraptor as D, and a Hitachi 7K1000 1 terabyte drive. They all take 38...

    Raptor 150

I have both the old 150gig Raptor drives, a brand new Velociraptor drive and a Hitachi 7K1000. All of them test the same in my computer. I wouldn't bother getting a different drive if it was me.

    Motherboard/CPU/Memory recommendation for MathCAD

Thanks! Unfortunately, MathCAD does not use multiple threads yet and when I queried them as to whether or not they planned to implement multiple threading they said they did not plan to do so.

    Motherboard/CPU/Memory recommendation for MathCAD

I need the fastest Motherboard/CPU/Memory combination to use with MathCAD. The emphasis needs to be on which combination allows the fastest floating point calculations. Secondarily, it takes forever for the program to load into memory. Graphics speed is not that big of a deal.

    No luck with building computers

It is interesting that you brought up the topic of magnetic fields. I have been thinking the same thing about myself. I must have some kind of magnetic or electrical field that keeps killing the machines.

    No luck with building computers

Is it just me or do you have problems with computers that you have built? I have built several and very few of them last. There are a couple that are still going after several years but most of them develop some kind of problem, especially with motherboards. I tend to use premium components...

Dually Motherboard with a 5volt, 64 bit slot?

Yes, it was the retail version with all the packaging. At the time I had no idea there were two different kinds of 64 bit slots.

Dually Motherboard with a 5volt, 64 bit slot?

Does anyone know of a manufacturer that makes a dually mobo with a 5volt, 64 bit slot? I bought a MSI K7D Master and a Tekram Ultra 160 SCSI controller card but they are incompatible due to the differences in voltage and slot configuration.

    64 bit PCI boards

I bought a MSI dual processor mobo that has 2 64 bit slots. I also bought a Tekram SCSI 160 controller card. I was surprised when the card would not fit in the mobo's slot. The configuration of the pins and cutouts is different. Would someone please explain why there are 2 different configurations?

    AOpen AX4B-533 Tube Motherboard

Has anyone heard of the AOpen AX4B-533 Tube mobo? I'm curious if anyone has any interest at all in it besides me. From an audiophile standpoint, it is too good to be true but for most people I can't imagine it drawing any interest at all. I can't imagine that they can recoup the engineering...

    Chaintech 7VJL- KT333

Well.... Somewhat bad news to report. The board will not post at 166mhz even though the manual says it will. Supposedly it has a 1/5 divider but something is not right with the implementation. See the review at http://www.viahardware.com/kt333apogee_1.shtm which seems to agree with my...

    Chaintech 7VJL- KT333

After all was said and done, this thing runs like a champ. The reason it appeared dead when I first tried to crank it up was that the picture of the front panel connector in the manual looks 180 deg. out. Also, the cpu speed jumpers are not explained very well in the manual. In any case, all's...

    Chaintech 7VJL- KT333

I just received my 7VJL from newegg. It is deader than a doornail. I have checked the jumpers but it still will not come on. Also, the board is a little different than the manual. One of the jumpers on the board is not in the manual.

    Asus P4T533-C + P4 2.2 (100FSB) + PC1066 =

I have the same combination (P4T533-C, 2.2,1066 ram) but when I select 133/33 from the menu, it will not boot. The voice says it can't boot due to overclocking. How do I get around this?

    Asus mobo requires Samsung Rdram??

I just got a new Asus mobo with the Intel 850 chipset and it uses RDRAM. The manual says that only Samsung memory chips should be used. Is this a hard and fast rule or can I use chips from another manufacturer?

what is the best DDR ram ??? looking to get 512mb

I normally use Crucial, but I have a couple of sticks of Muskin. Both are good. I recently bought 2 sticks of Kingmax 333 and it solved a problem with overclocking. Cheers

    Win 2k and sound card

Does Windows 2000 pro have problems with sound cards? I can't get it to work with a MSI K7 Master-S regardless of whether I try the built in sound card, an SB Live or a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I have the same problem with an ECS K7S5A. Any ideas?

    MSI K7 Master-S no sound

I can't get the sound to work on this mobo. I am running Win 2k pro. I have tried the driver from their web site but doesn't work either. I am also trying to install a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz but it says that the data is bad. (I did disable the onboard sound before doing this) Any ideas?

Radeon driver for Linux Mandrake 8.0

Linux Mandrake 8.0 apparently has a driver for the Ati Radeon built in because when I go to the X configuration page, that board type is listed. However, it doesn't present me with a list of resolutions from which to choose. Also, the video is really slow. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Corsair vs Crucial memory speed

I oc'd both of them at the same speed. That was why I wondered what the deal was with the Corsair. On the Iwill KK266R+, both brands were able to run at the "FASTEST" setting for DRAM and with CAS=2.

    Corsair vs Crucial memory speed

I've started testing Corsair PC2400 and PC150 to see if it is any better than Crucial's PC2100 and PC133 CL2 memory. So far it doesn't seem that the Corsair performs any better. Has anyone else made similar tests? I'd like some feedback.

You to... can be a superhero.

I know this isn't exactly going to answer your question but I have a KK266 with a tbird 1.2Ghz running over 1.4 without a hitch. It has a Thermalright SK-6 with a quiet fan to boot. I'm getting the other board pretty soon and should be able to compare them but I would say go with the Iwill board...

    Which AMD DDR board?

I'm going to issue a caution against the Epox board. Although it is now up and running with the 1200 cpu clocking at 1342 seemingly effortlessly, it was a pain to set up. The manual was wrong and the dip switch that you use to set the multiplier has a problem. One of the settings causes the...

    Gigabyte GA-7DXR with Win 2K

Has anyone tried this board with Win 2K? The drivers for the onboard Promise raid controller don't seem to agree with Win 2K's setup program. By the way, the manual is no help in figuring out where these drivers are on the CD-ROM. I found them by accident. Also, the manual is incorrect about...
