What a good printer for around $50

If you just need b&w, I would recommend a laser. I have a Brother that I bought 3 years ago and all I have spent on toner is $24. I previously had an Epson inkjet and about every 6 months, I would have to spend $50 or more for cartridges. The first toner cartridge for my Brother lasted 2 1/2...

    Troubleshoot this symtom

IMHO, I would lean towards the PSU first and would try another one. I always have a couple of extra computers laying around so it is easy for me to do that. It may not as easy for you unless you purchase another one. But, make sure you check for popped or expanded caps on the mobo. Good...

Biostar K8M800 and Athlon X2 BE-2400 not working

I have an Asrock AM2 board that works great with a Windsor 5600+ but will not work with a Brisbane 5600+, which are different wattage CPUs. I assume a bios update would work for me, but I decided not to do that as my Windsor has the 1MB X 2 cache while the Brisbane has only 512 KB X 2. Good...

Using CPUs not "supported" in BIOS...

Just a little piece of info. I have a 5600x2 Windsor in an Asrock motherboard. I recently acquired a 5600X2 Brisbane and it would not work in my Asrock board. I really didn't care since the Windsor has 1MB of L2 cache on each core while the Brisbane has only 512 on each core. I probably...

possibility of getting O/S to run on new/different motherboard

Do you still have the HD intact with the OS from before the motherboard went bad? If so, have you tried to boot to it? I imagine that you do want a clean install of the OS but may be forced to buy one. I have an install of 2000 Pro from Feb 2005 that has been through about 5 different...

    Strange AMD 5600 X2 problem

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering why I couldn't find much about the Dublin core and was not aware they were Brisbanes. I was also getting mixed info about the L2 cache but I was pretty sure the Windsor was 1MB on each core. AMD's website wasn't very helpful to explain all the differences...

    Strange AMD 5600 X2 problem

I have had an AMD 5600+ X2 in my computer for almost a year now in an Asrock motherboard. It runs great and I have no problems. I think it is a Windsor core. I recently picked up another 5600+ with an ECS motherboard in a combo deal. I benchtested that setup and it works fine. But is shows it...

    Ultimate Linux/Unix n00b....help?

I have found an easy way to play with Linux and still have my Windows OS intact. I have 2 removable bays in my tower. I have my Windows HD in one of them. In the other, is a HD on which I install 'nix. That HD has had 6 or more flavors of 'nix at one time or another. If I want to play with Linux...

    Just installed Fedora 9

I have played with Ubuntu a couple of times. I just now installed Fedora 9 and it did a better job of setting up the nVidia video card than Ubuntu. But it didn't have the codecs to play video files. Guess there are tradeoffs with any of the different distros. Good Luck Smitty

    Brother HL-2040 Monochrome Laser Printer

I have had the Brother HL-2040 for over 2 years and still am running the original toner. I paid $80 or $90 for it. I know during that same 2 years, if I was still using one of the inkjets I had previously, I would have spent $150 for ink cartridges. So it is a no brainer for me. Good Luck Smitty

    System panel connectors

The way that I do the power LED connector is to use a pair of sidecutter pliers and cut the connector down the middle of the empty slot. Then they can be put individually on the correct pins on the motherboard. You can either trim the excess plastic or just turn the connectors 90 degrees. As...

    Canned air? Air compressor?

I use an air compressor on every dirty computer that I work on and have never had a problem. Just don't use full pressure and only use short bursts. Don't let fans spin out of control by sticking a small screwdriver in the blades. And I don't think the moisture is a problem. Some climates have...

Are we getting a taste of what happens when there is only one manufacturer left on the market?

If everyone didn't HAVE to have the latest and greatest. most expensive, things would be a lot different!!!! The companies realize there is a sucker born every minute!!!

Do I upgrade or not, what is your opinion

    Simple dual-booting question...

To me, the simplest way is to have a removable rack in your computer and have 2 removable trays, each with a hard drive and an OS, and just put in the hard drive to which you want to boot. That is what I am doing at the moment. I have Ubuntu on one drive. which I am using right now, and 2000 PRO...

New HDD but computer is hesitating and running slow!!!

It doesn't sound like the drive itself is the problem. The drive won't cause a typing problem. As far as the 3.0 SATA, it doesn't run any faster than 1.5 SATA in real time, so that is not a problem. You must have a memory problem or have too much running in the background, hogging up your...
