    Atom for sale at Newegg

PCI is the logical choice. It's universal... unless you want to install a SAS card or something crazy. Sure, an x1 slot may offer double the bandwidth, but for a $69 kit, compatibility is more important.

Intel Price Cuts Be a Comin' Q3

In Q3, the Q6600 will still be doing the majority of the grunt work for Intel. That's why they're keeping it. It'll continue to beat AMD in the numbers game: 2.4 GHz and 8 MB cache. Not to mention real-world performance. Finally, it squeezes AMD even tighter by forcing X3 Cripple-Core down...

It's times like these when I'm glad I can read Chinese. HKEPC posted a slide deck and a huge article on Nehalem a few days ago. Since then, almost everybody has linked to them.

    8 Core Nehalem

Intel is building four 45nm fabs, each of which have 176,000 to 200,000+ sq. feet of clean room space. AMD's Fab 36 has less than 1/5 this amount of clean room space. Even if you account for Larrabee and Silverthorne, it doesn't take a whiz to figure out which process node Intel plans to...

    8 Core Nehalem

Intel's CEO already confirmed back in September that 8-core Nehalem would be monolithic. If you look at the die photo of quad-core Nehalem, the four cores are arranged linearly. This makes zero sense in terms of timings. But if Intel mirrored the whole thing for an 8-core device, the whole...

B3 stepping vs GO - how are current overclocks going

The motherboard bag isn't always sealed. In most cases, we have to put a company/warranty sticker on the board.

    I blame monolithic design

CPU designs take 3-5 years before fruition. AMD's game plan for Barcelona was devised back when Intel was touting NetBurst. Back then, Intel intended to take NetBurst to the next step via Tejas, which was a monolithic 213mm2 device (Barcelona is 285mm2). AMD probably also genuinely believed...

Is this the end of the line for the Athon64 X2 core?

AMD will release a 5800+ (2.9 GHz, 89W) and a BE-2450 (2.5 GHz, 45W) next year. Brisbane still has to hold the fort for another 4-6 months before Phenom X2 arrives.

AMD Unveils Second ?Black Edition? Microprocessor for Enthusiasts

The data only measures the U.S. retail market (i.e. Wal-Mart, BB, CC) so the data isn't conclusive. If you factor in Intel-centric sources like white box builders and Dell, I suspect Intel comes out on top.

    Penryn lineup ?

Q9300 is designed to compete with Phenom at sub-$200. These prices are designed to be fluid since Phenom prices have not yet been revealed. Right now, Q9300 has a $266 placeholder, but soon, you'll see a Q9350 with 12 MB cache replacing it. Q9300 will be sub-$200.

    Intel Penryn desktop processors listed

It should be pretty obvious the QX isn't 130W. The 3.2 GHz (X5482) quad-core part for DP is 120W. They're holding onto the 130W envelope in case a 3.33+ part is needed.

    AMD Confirms Three Core Phenom

Triple-core is a double-edged sword, especially since AMD has confirmed that those parts will be salvaged from quads. Yields increase with time. If the triple-core market is as big as AMD suggests, they'll eventually have to make X3s from perfectly good X4s. If a powerhouse like Dell or HP...

    AMD prepares three-core processors

Honestly, I don't see how AMD expects to compete using triple-core. Q6600 is currently $266. With Penryn/Yorkfield set to arrive soon, Q6600 is bound to drop in price, probably to the $224 slot (or less). If $224 isn't cheap enough, Intel can probably package together a pair of 2.13GHz...

    AMD Confirms Three Core Phenom

I'm not aware of any die size estimates for Phenom X2. The official data only reveals that it has the same cache size and structure as X4/Barcelona.

    AMD Confirms Three Core Phenom

Probably. If dual-core Phenom was a different piece of silicon, AMD would have likely removed the L3, or at least reduced it.

    AMD prepares three-core processors

The Xeon 7200 series is Clovertown with one core on each side disabled, leaving each core with 4 MB. Triple-core really should not be a problem if Intel needs to produce an SKU.

When will Barcelona be at NewEgg?

Around November. AMD claims they started "shipping" in August, but no one has these chips, not even tier-1. As for Phenom, it's looking like January.

    Will AMD Phenom beat CD2???

An octo-core MCM is physically impossible with Barcelona. AMD did not layout Barcelona for an MCM design. Study a photo of an unlidded Barcelona and then return to this thread.

    Will AMD Phenom beat CD2???

No. Keep in mind Barcelona has a L3 cache. The job of the L3 is to reduce memory traffic. It's going to mitigate the effects of moving up to DDR2-800 or 1066. The L3 also increases latency because to get to the main memory, it has to go through this 20ns L3 roadblock. One or two additional...

It's not even enough to trounce Kentsfield. Compared to K8 Quad FX, Kentsfield had a 30-50% lead in those games.

    AT Barcelona previews are up

Barcelona as a consumer chip looks disappointing, whether it's gaming or media encoding. Barcelona for server apps looks reasonable, but the low clock speed means low ASPs. Since 45nm Harpertown/Yorkfield and 1600 MHz FSB are coming soon, there's really no reason for AMD to celebrate.

Will there be a billion 'new Barcelona build" thread by next week?

The tardy arrival of AMD's product makes it moot. The ones that want performance already switched to Intel. There are also plenty of P965 boards that support Conroe through Yorkfield.

It just means a beta or internal version of the BIOS has been loaded. The board should not be sold with this version installed typically because of stability issues or settings that have not been locked down.

Intel can do no wrong! Check out the new AT review on Q6600 GO stepping.

"Do no wrong"? I don't understand, are you not satisfied with $266? Maybe you think the improvements in G0 aren't enough? What is it exactly that you're looking for, given the competition has nothing to offer?

Core 2 Duo and P3 Chip Size

No, the FC-PGA package from the P3 era is massive compared to LGA775. It's got an edge length of 4.95cm vs 3.75cm.

What was your favorite overclocking "era" and why?

The current era.... Pentium Dual-Core E2160 1.8 GHz @ 3.0 GHz, stock cooling. Under $100 for the boxed processor. 3.2 to 3.6 easily achievable using a Ninja.

    Barcelona runs at 3.0 ghz

Using "true" implies quad-core processors must comply with some normative standard. Those standards don't exist. That's why only marketing guys use it. Barcelona is a monolithic quad-core. Clovertown is an MCM quad-core. Enlightened?

When will new CPU prices drop to batch price level?

Give it 2 or 3 months. Distributors pay significantly less than the 1ku tray price. But the problem is the parts are being booked as soon as they're available. In addition, at the bottom level, resellers are choosing to charge more at this point.
