    Help me find a GPS

Best Buy has the Garmin Nuvi 255wt on sale for $180 this week. They have the Magellan RoadMate 1440 (4.3", TTS and no traffic, bluetooth, media player) for $144.

For $10 more ($89.99) I see the 3250 (refurb) at TigerDirect (as of Sat 11/29). It comes with the 6M POI, AAA Tourbook, live traffic capability, Bluetooth and other stuff. It -may- also have a headphone jack. That I'm not sure of since I have the 3225 which despite pictures indicating it has...

    Memory prices - Amazing

Microsoft is loving this because their inefficient programmers can now spec the minimum recommended RAM for Windows 7 and Office 2010 at 4GB. Lovely!

It may vary with the manufacturer and retailer but TigerDirect has a number of refurb models (for brands they are authorized to sell) and they appear to have full warranties.

    Are Bluetooth headsets unique?

I've used two identical Plantronics headsets with my Centro. I also purchased them at the same time from the same supplier so they could have been from the same manufacturing batch. Even with the same (default) passcode they are uniquely identified.

    Magellan has New Maps

I wonder when they will start shipping that version of the software installed on new units. At the rate prices are dropping it would likely make more sense to buy a new unit for $125-$150 than buy an $80 DVD. You would have a spare GPS for $45-$70 over the price of the DVD. As a 3225 owner...

Did you have both downloaded files in the same folder and with the same name (unchanged) as downloaded? It took me a few tries too since I tend to modify the names of files when I download them. I used unrar(command line). One file is created from the two parts. You only need to reference...

The 3225 has POI data for all regions that it has maps for (US48, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Puerto Rico). The 6M figure for POI data is actually the total for all regions. As mentioned earlier in the quite long thread, the larger US48 file has ~4.8M POI. The larger US48 POI file is the only one...

What features are important to you? If you value support, Magellan may not be the brand for you. There is no shortage of old and new horror stories about tons of phone time, months for repair and relatively high repair costs. Dunno how that will be now that unit prices are much lower than...

    Bluetooth Headset ~$40

Though bluetooth is a standard, some phones work better (or worse) with certain models of headsets. You may want to specify your phone model when you ask for recommendations. If you want one to use primarily in your care you may not car about size. If that is the case I like my Plantronics...

Not to be argumentative but that sounds like the Black Friday price. As you know, the regular price for the Roadmate 1200 is $150 which is about the same as the Maestro 3100 and only $30 less than the 3225 which stores the maps internally with 800MB free. In addition the 3225 comes with the AC...

Sounds like the 1200 is a dud! It isn't any cheaper than the 3100 but with significantly more limitations. Why bother? It's also too close in price to the 3225 (when on sale for $180). But anyway...is there a way to determine if it is something simple like volume label that it is looking...

Updating the US48 POI may make your unit more desirable in the future for eBay. You should not need to tell your GPS where you are, it should tell you. Within 2-3 minutes after you turn your unit on (in reasonably clear skies) it should receive signals from enough satellites to determine...

Which GPS for under, say, $250?

If you are considering the Magellan Maestro 3100 for $130 (among others) you should toss the 3225 in the mix as well for $50 more (sale,Costco). It has TTS, more internal memory, easy upgraded internal POI file (see other thread),multi-destination routing, more regions, and AC adapter. It is...

Which GPS for under, say, $250?

The Garmin Nuvi 260 (their least expensive TTS model) can be found for $250-260USD (delivered) though I'm not sure that's from authorized dealers. The Magellan Maestro 3225 goes on sale for $180 @ Costco and Radio Shack sells it for $250USD.

Which GPS for under, say, $250?

For Garmin's "w" models screen size is the only difference. I'm guessing they do not expand the battery along with the screen, though they could, so battery life is likely reduced for the "w" over their 3.5" screen version. That is 100% speculation though. If anyone knows for sure please post.

I got the last Nuvi 200 at that Ritz. My conundrum is that I am happy with the Maestro 3225 and purchased it from Costco. Costco says the manufacturer may not honor the warranty which may be a good thing if they are standing behind it. From Costco.com The question I have is does Costco...

Good point. That makes it even more difficult for those of us who primarily use them in one region to compare. It's too bad they don't publish an API so independent developers could offer enhancements. An open source API may make their devices more popular. Even after the US POI...

Interesting. The POI count makes me wonder if advertised POI counts are routinely fudged or if there is a reasonable explanation for the discrepancy. I wonder if the size difference of the file is due to a more efficient compiler since its a later version used for the 32xx. Seems a bit odd...
