Mine: Just got the Dell Mini 9 a couple days ago. Neat little machine. I'm still getting used to the keyboard.

I thought the credit market was supposed to be tight...

Just for kicks, I clicked the "request credit line increase" option on my Citi credit card account, and was surprised when I was offered an increase of $1400 to my credit ceiling. I've never broken even 20% of my available credit on the card, and I pay off my bill in full each month, so the...

Some things just make you stop to think.

I took these photos in 2005 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and just ran across them again this evening while looking through my pics.bbzzdd.com account. Really makes you stop and wonder what life is all about. Note left at the wall Flags :brokenheart:

Hundreds of yards of fiber is being installed above my head right now.

There are three Verizon techs in the crawlspace above my apartment now running fiber for FiOS. Tomorrow, they'll be coming into each unit in my building to install the termination box. And shortly after that, I plan to order their 15Mbps/2Mbps service. :)

Man, I was *so* close to finishing 4 years worth of document shredding...

I'm moving to a new place soon and am trying to get rid of as much junk as possible in preparation for the move. Tonight, I ran across bank and credit card statements and receipts dating back to 2003 (remember $1.399/gal for gas?!) and decided to shred them. After finishing all the credit...

I just bought GREEN electric power for the next 11 months

My current price from BGE for regular old coal-fired electricity is $0.1088/kWh, which is pretty reasonable. Other utilities charge $0.12 - $0.13/kWh. I've heard a lot about buying carbon credits, but I don't have $20/mo. to spend on something that I'll never see. However, I did some...

My entire neighborhood is caked in ice

I'd post a pic of the neighborhood, but that would involve scraping my apartment windows. I'm really surprised that the power hasn't gone out. EDIT: there's no screen on that part of the window - the ice is actually stuck directly on the glass in this picture. :Q

I need help finding this song...

Okay, I fixed the link... I even have a sample of the music! Hopefully this will be quick and painless. I have to say, I don't even like the song that much, but I'm incredibly curious to find out the title and artist. Any help offered is much appreciated. Sounds like the lyrics are "It's...

Do you use PGP to encrypt email?

Does anyone use PGP to encrypt their email? It's a great idea and a neat concept, but very few people I know use it, which makes it impractical for my use. There's even a plugin for Firefox to let you use PGP with Gmail.

    Well *that* was strange...

I went to the grocery store earlier for some chow mein noodles - they're for a tuna casserole I'm baking today. The noodles (La Choy brand) were the only item I purchased. The checkout coupon that came with them? DOG FOOD. I know those rumors about Chinese food are funny, but I didn't...

Paying relatives to do stuff for you is a bad idea...

I run a small, local jam and preserves business. Nothing out of the ordinary; I buy fresh blueberries, strawberries and raspberries at a discount from a friend of mine who owns a berry farm, and I make really nice products from them. My neighbors have always loved my jams and they've been...

I've had enough of the Gerald Ford complaint threads.

There's a reason we don't toss former presidents' bodies into unmarked graves and cover 'em over with dirt and a wooden cross. The state funeral is what keeps the prestige of the office intact. Everything surrounding the United States presidency is filled with tradition, formality and...

    Can someone get a vacation...

Naldo's comment here is quite a bit out of line, I think. Especially since Ford's state funeral in D.C. just concluded mere hours ago.

    Eating in a restaurant alone...

I eat alone at restaurants fairly frequently, but only at "quick" food places, like Panera Bread and local diners. I usually bring a book or magazine. The only time I go to anyplace nicer than that is with my girlfriend. I find it relaxing to eat alone. I don't have to worry about my manners...

Nothing like an early-afternoon lunch at the taqueria

I stopped by the local taqueria this afternoon for lunch. I ordered three tacos al pastor and an orange Jarritos. I added some hot peppers (not sure what kind, but they look like shredded cabbage) and some salsa roja, and I was off and running. It's the first time I've been to this...

    Good freaking Lord...Monster cables

Who would pay $125 for a 6-foot HDMI cable when Monoprice has one for $7? I can guarantee that a Monster cable (especially a full digital one like HDMI) will not deliver a picture that's worth 20 times the cost of Monoprice's cable.

Wow, I think a shooting just happened in my neighborhood

So I'm watching Thank You For Smoking on my couch, when I start to hear several sirens outside my apartment. No big deal, as I live near a fire station. Then I hear the rumble of helicopter blades. Again, no biggie; there are two airports within 5 miles of my house. But the helicopter keeps...

My apartment's furnace has run without a filter for at least 6 months

I dropped by my apartment office today to pick up a new furnace filter as I just started using the heat this month. When I got home, I opened the furnace closet and discovered that there was no furnace filter already installed. I've lived in this apartment for about 6 months and have not had...

My college has the best ideas.

Magic Bus lets Michigan students track campus buses as they make their way around campus. No more waiting outside in the cold for a bus that's 28 minutes away! The best part is that it updates in real time, so you can watch the bus literally drive down the street! It was developed over about...

You know you're a geek when...

My tomato plant was getting out of control (and some tomatoes were on the ground :Q), so I knew I had to do something. I didn't feel like going to the store, so I took a 10-foot length of coax cable and wrapped it around the plant. Now all the fruit is off the ground and the plant is looking...

My girlfriend wants to "waste" her rent money...

My girlfriend is starting graduate school in D.C. this fall and she moved into her apartment about 1.5 weeks ago. She lives in a beautiful neighborhood in Georgetown and is paying about $1200/month for a 1-bedroom basement apartment. However, she's incredibly homesick and lonely (I live...

Did you have a song that makes you think of your mom or dad?

My dad and I always loved John Denver's "Shanghai Breezes," and every time I hear it I think of summer days when I was little and that song would come on the tape deck in his car. I haven't heard the song in years, and I just started thinking about it. My dad is 500 miles away now, but I'll...

For $14, I'd expect the initial experience to at least be somewhat pleasant. Instead, my brand-new CD has sticker residue all over it and it took 10 minutes to open the darn thing. :|

I got a little creative with dinner tonight

Instead of the usual Sunday meal of steak and salad, I integrated the salad right into the meal. I grilled the onion slices for about 2 min. per side, and then drizzled them with a sauce containing olive oil, red wine vinegar, honey, salt and pepper. I sprinkled the tomatoes with salt and...

What kind of spider is this? PIC

Yech!! Spider! At first I feared it was a Black Widow, but the red marks aren't in an hourglass shape so I don't think it is. If it's not dangerous I'll leave it because spiders kill other insects. Also, it's not as big as it looks; the total length from leg to leg is probably around ¾"...

    How's this for sh!tty?

I just moved to a new town and don't have any friends, so I'm stuck celebrating my birthday on my own. No biggie - I don't really like being the center of attention anyway. When I got home from work today, I noticed that my burglar alarm had been tripped with a police entry code, which...

My girlfriends brother owes her $450

My girlfriend is living at home with her parents this summer to be closer to her job. She's starting grad school in the fall. Her brother is "subletting" her apartment, but they never made up a contract, so everything is informal. He's 20 years old and was working at Staples, but he quit...

Some pictures from my vegetable garden

It's pretty modest, but I think the yield should be exactly right for me. There are four jalapeño plants, one tomato plant (which is just starting to flower, as pictured), and a pizza pepper plant (potted). The tomato plant is still pretty short and squat, so I'm thinking it might be a cherry...
