    PCI and DRAM frequency confusion

So, I need to build a new machine on the cheap, and after a long period of not overclocking (the last time I knew anything about it was when I had a celeron 566), I have become a bit confused over PCI frequency locks and ratios. I'm talking about the PCI-not-express frequency here, as I don't...

    Strange Browsing Problem

Well, I tried yet another spyware program ('spy sweeper'), and it turns out I had 'cdilla' which is apparently by macrovision. I removed that, and my problem is fixed. I don't understand why neither adaware or spybot found this, or why cdilla would want to add some javascript that breaks a...

POLL: Half-Life 2, Doom 3, or Far Cry?

I really liked FarCry, up until about half way through. After that, it just got more and more boring. And then a bit more boring. I finished it for the sake of it, and not because I was at all interested in what was going to happen next. The final few levels were a complete joke, and the...

    Strange Browsing Problem

I've got an up to date AVG, which finds nothing, and the Trend Housecall finds nothing. Adaware and Spybot are both up to date and both find nothing but the odd 'tracker cookie'. Since the code seems to be to do with the mouse, I tried changing the mouse driver from the microsoft one to just...

    Strange Browsing Problem

OK, I just installed Opera, and I'm having the exact same problem. The same code is put at the top of every page I go on, and the websites that don't work at all with IE or FireFox still don't work :( Also, I just realised it's putting this code at the bottom of every page as well: <SCRIPT...

    Strange Browsing Problem

I hate doing this, but *bump* Any suggestions or ideas would really be appreciated. I tried reinstalling FireFox, and reinstalling J2RE, but neither of these things made a difference. An obvious solution might be to reinstall windows, but I don't want to do that without knowing what the...

    Strange Browsing Problem

Hi I'm using Firefox and IE, they both have the exact same problem. A few websites stopped working, including gmail (shows loading screen forever), and HardOCP (black screen, browser says 'done'). I thought I would check the page had actually downloaded by going to view > source, and it seems...

    USB-key wireless network adapters

OK, thanks. Do you think getting a USB extension lead and putting the USB key on the end of that would help? The distance from the router to any of the PCs is quite short, everything is within around a 10 meter radius of the router through up to I guess 2 walls.

Can I split 1 cable line to 2 cable modems ?

Our cable line uses a splitter to conenct a cable TV box and a cable modem, and we have had no connection issues ever. I think your main problem will be as ZickZJ said, that your provider will want to charge you extra or double to have two modems connected.

    USB-key wireless network adapters

Hi. I'm setting up a friends broadband with a wireless network. Obviously I don't want them spending more than they need to (we are students), but at the same time, the thing is going to need to work. I saw that USB-key wireless network adapters are a fair bit cheaper than the 'box with an...

6800GT + DualView > wrong icon colour depth

Hi I got a 6800Gt a while ago (Aopen one). It's all working fine, and the other day I decided to give this DualView nonsense a go. It works properly, and is overall a pretty impressive feature. The only problem is that with DualView enabled, all my icons take the 8-bit colour depth versions...

    College Students, Computer Theft???

I'm a third year electronic engineering student, and there has not been one time when I wished I had a laptop. There are hundreds of computers on campus to choose from in computer rooms that I can use 24/7. I think if you are worried about carting your computer home at the holidays, just get a...

    System buying advice

Thanks for the replies. A 3.2EE is way above what I want to pay really, with the 2.8C coming in at around £125; the 3.2EE is nearly £700! I am pretty inflexible on the CPU front, I just don't want to wait so long that the 2.8C is not being made any more, and I don't know when this will be - the...

    System buying advice

Hi (hope this isn't the wrong forum!). I am looking to buy a new system in time for the arrival of HL2 and doom3, and am mainly interested in the future availability of northwoods. At the moment, I'm looking at: Intel 2.8C Asus P4P800-Deluxe 2*512 DDR 9800xt/5950 or lower end x800/6800 I am...

    'clever' bandwidth throttling

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like this isn't going to be all that easy, but I'm downloading smoothwall now. I guess I'll just have a play with it, and hope my housemates don't get too annoyed when they get disconnected :)

    Remote Desktop Connection

I don't think you need to completely disable the firewall, just un-block the ports that RDC uses... though I don't know what ports these are. I'm guessing if your home PC is online all day that you have broadband; try forwarding the ports that RDC uses as well if you are using a router. I know...

    'clever' bandwidth throttling

OK, Firstly here are the resources I have available: Linksys router with 4 port switch, cable modem, 12 port switch, a bunch of network cards, and a P2 350 that can be used to run a linux router or whatever. We have 4 people in our house who share the 512K connection. The basic problem is that...

    P3 coolers

I searched for p3 and only got one result, so I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I'm trying to get either a passive or very quiet P3 heatsink in the UK, and am not having much luck. I remember there used to be a ton of them on the market and was hoping that perhaps now the big ones might...

    Drives spinup for no reason

I'm running win2k pro SP4. I have a CD drive, a CD writer, and two Hard drives, and the hard drives are set to turn off after half an hour. The problem comes when I go to shut the PC down, windows decides it needs to spin up both CD drives if there is a CD in them, and the secondary hard drive...

windows took over my parallel port

OK, so is there such a thing as a universal parallel port driver? A driver that lets you use the port as if windows wasn't there... somehow? This is almost as annoying as when windows tells you 'sorry, you can't delete that file', or 'sorry, microsoft won't let you end that process' :)

windows took over my parallel port

OK thanks. I already tried booting into DOS, and it does work properly having done this. I just don't see why it is impossible to write a byte of your choice to the parallel port (which the software for the emulator is doing) in windows :(

windows took over my parallel port

Hi As part of a university module, we are developing systems using the 6502 microprocessor, and for the testing out of software for the systems, we use ROM emulators which plug into the PC parallel port and the ROM socket on the 6502 board. This emulator works fine in DOS, but when I try and...

    HDD click of doom dilema

Thats interesting JaydenChris, when the other drive died, I had to send my broken one to them, and only when they got that did they send me the replacement... If I could get the replacement first then I could easily transfer my files onto it before sending the clicking one back. I think I will...

    HDD click of doom dilema

I'm seeing some good improvements going from the diamondmax plus9 to the sata version (both 8 meg cache). Is this just because of the interface, or is the sata drive actually faster? If I were to connect the pata version to a sata controller using an adapter, would it bring the speed up to about...

    HDD click of doom dilema

OK, thanks. I don't want to buy a SATA adapter card because I am getting a new PC in 3 months, by adapter I meant one of those small things thayt just lets you plug a PATA drive into a SATA cable. I guess I'll have a look at some sata/pata comparisons.

    HDD click of doom dilema

I have a 5400rpm, 60 gig Maxtor drive that has served me well for 2 years. However, while running a virus scan yesterday, the drive started to make the click of doom. Broadband http dies after 5 minutes

I have this problem on two comepletely seperate networks, one is using ADSL and the other cable, and with two different routers (one netgear, one belkin). The broadband connection works perfectly in every way, except for after about 5 minutes of use, no website will load, even though msn or p2p...

    3ns RAM really 3ns?

At a guess that was when they implemented special methods for obtaining many sequential addresses in a row giving a short access time for those sequential reads, but as I say, that's only a guess.

    3ns RAM really 3ns?

Yeah that's a good idea. He said they are currently using some commercially available 'card' that does the job, but he said it costs something like £20,000 - I'm not sure of the details because this isn't a project I am working on (we just did a simple circuit to generate the laser pattern).

    3ns RAM really 3ns?

I see. One of my lecturers is working on a gigasample/second system for wave height analysis or something, and I thought perhaps the kind of memory used in video cards would be suitable. Oh well, thankyou - and sorry if this isn't technical enough for this forum.

    Which cheap TV out card?

After moving my PC into the lounge to watch a divx last night using the TV out on my Geforce2 GTS, I am now looking to convert another machine into a kind of half-assed HTPC. The only component I really need is another graphics card with TV out. I would use this GeForce and buy myself a new card...

    3ns RAM really 3ns?

Does the kind of RAM used on graphics card boards really have 3ns RAM? What I mean is, can you ask the memory for any random address, and the memory will have the data ready 3ns later, or does the 3ns figure only correspond to the reading of sequential locations?

    PSUs... all lies! (maybe)

My board is an asus cubx and apparently it has problems overclocking this particular chip. My rubbish heatsink is only losely attatched to the CPU and with a 3ghz coming soon... I can't be bothered any more :)
