My new 8800gt, a few questions

There are some problems with using the guru3d guide with the new version of Rivatuner (I discovered this recently as a noob to the program). There's an updated guide here, though: http://www.vaguetech.com/index.php?pageid=rt207

Biology is making me doubt evolution

It is interesting that many people seem to think that their subjective opinion on a biological system's "complexity" has any bearing on the truth of evolution. It is as if you are saying that your natural "insight" is more accurate than over a hundred years of scientific study by countless...

US Soldier used Koran for target practice

I'm sure most Muslims respect the Bible as a religious text important to many people, even though it is not what they believe. Maybe extremists don't, but they are out there anyway. The point is that treating the Quran with such disdain is highly undiplomatic. It's also just, well, rude. Free...

    Einstein: God belief is childish

I think what Cyclo meant was that Einstein's genius with regard to physics says little if anything about his authority on matters of philosophy and religion. People seem to think that because Einstein believed or did not believe in God, it means something profound.

    Einstein: God belief is childish

Well isn't that nice for you. However, there are a lot of people on Earth. After you're done thanking God for being so generous, would you be inclined to ask why millions suffered famine, disease and war while you led a relatively blessed life? Out of empathy for my fellow man, I too would be...

    Budget Gaming

Ah good point. Should I go with the 4800+ instead? I can swing the extra $20 for 2.5GHz. Will that give me more headroom for potential overclocking? http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103212

    Budget Gaming

Been around the forums for ages, but this is my first actual build. I thought I'd get some input before I actually click "buy". The PC is for lots of things, but the most important with regard to performance is gaming (MMO, FPS, the works). My budget is about $600, which the current setup is...

Watch the web for climate change truths

This is really why I quoted Cyclo's post. The point is we can't really prove that man has anything to do with it. If you are waiting for proof you will be disappointed. That is not how science works. This doesn't mean that scientists cannot piece together data and have a pretty good picture of...

Watch the web for climate change truths

One of the best ways to counter this global warming issue would be to halt deforestation of our rain forests, not cut them down for this morally gray biofuel nonsense. There are plenty of other reasons to stop deforestation anyway. CycloWizard said it best, on the first page:

$100 million opening weekend for Iron Man

Iron Man impressed me as just being a good movie. It is a very entertaining watch. Some super hero movies are not so great, even if they capture the hero well, but this movie nailed everything.

Anti-genetic bill passes through Congress and the only one to oppose it........

I was going to use this analogy as well. Neither free market nor state's rights arguments really apply here. This is about discrimination based on human attributes. Also, giving genetics more freedom to explore is a nice side effect.

    JK Rowling suing a fan-made website/book?

That Card guy is not very convincing. It's more of an opinion piece than a serious comment on the legal side of things. He doesn't seem to like JKR for whatever reason. The only point he has that I noticed was that there are some other books which are related to the Potter universe. Dunno how...

    JK Rowling suing a fan-made website/book?

I dunno. I think that profiting off of Rowling's world by making an encyclopedia is a legitimate concern for the author. If it's non-profit, fair enough, but if you're making money off of collecting facts someone else came up with.. eh.... I'll have no sympathy if he loses.

I Am Ripoff, I mean Legend

I liked 28 Days Later a lot, it had a cool atmosphere. I Am Legend was just a lot of good solo acting by Will Smith. Both movies are good, but... Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.. ripoff?.. Hahahahahahahahahahaha... etc

Mother Nature a scapegoat for God?

Oh indeed, along with other viruses and bacteria (thanks for that Ebola, that is a real treat, and the Bubonic Plague.. I'm sure that we deserved it, right?). Also the large variety of parasitic organisms which cause pain and illness to humans as well as animals, in places without proper health...

Mother Nature a scapegoat for God?

Why shouldn't we blame God for natural disasters and the ensuing chaos, famine and suffering? He created the Earth, including it's weather systems.

LOL.....great way for the best man to piss off the bride

I hope my wedding is as fun. Admittedly the jokes were a bit weak, but still humorous in a light hearted way. Seemed like most of the people were enjoying it. If it's all dull and respectful I would just be bored and look back on it with indifference (speaking about the reception of course...

How do I talk to white people about the weather?

Do people make small talk about the weather? I mean, it might be part of small talk, but it's not like you have to get into it. "Yeah, it's nice" is an appropriate answer. To follow it up you can compare it to the current weather pattern (how it compares to the previous day/days, and the...

Is your mind corrupt? Look at this picture and decide for yourself

First picture I saw the couple first, like every other adult person would. I picked out the dolphins quickly though. The second illusion held for about a second before I could only see the lamp. The "legs" are shaped too weird when you really look at it.

some rich guy in India is building a $2 billion "home"

I find it hard to accept that anyone would need to spend more than a few million on a home. Anything else is just excess for the sake of it, which I find morally lacking, if not outright "wrong".

    Contacts vs Glasses

I have a stylish pair of glasses. I get compliments on them from time to time. As long as you have a pair of glasses that suit you, they can be a nice accessory. I can't be bothered to deal with the hassle or expense of contacts, and there's no way I'm getting eye surgery.

How do you justify (ethically) consuming animals and animal products when you don't need to?

This is my view. I carelessly slaughter microorganisms by the thousands each time I wash my hands. It seems very hypocritical to start feeling squeamish about killing animals because they are cute and fluffy.

Expelled--No Intelligence Allowed Movie lacks intelligence?

Apoppin, is it really necessary to be so aggressive? I'm not attacking you. I'm just trying to explain it from a scientific perspective. Being condescending and offensive does not make your point any stronger. Before I respond properly, I would like to note that I have been misusing the term...

Feds: 36 mpg for cars by 2015

36mpg seems a little pathetic for 2015. The average mpg in places like Europe has been well over that for some time. It is not out of reach technologically. It's just that cars in the US are not designed to be efficient, but to be unnecessarily powerful and bulky.

Expelled--No Intelligence Allowed Movie lacks intelligence?

Well, I don't know about textbooks, but if anyone is saying spontaneous generation is more than a possible source of the origin of life, they are being misleading. However, as I said in my previous post, "god created" is not an equivalent alternative. Just because there is no definitive proof...

Expelled--No Intelligence Allowed Movie lacks intelligence?

I was never taught that abiogenesis was anything more than a hypothetical origin of life. Is this not the case elsewhere? The reason "spontaneous generation of life" is more scientific than "god created" is because there is a hypothetical basis for spontaneous generation that is grounded in...

OSU Officials Prevent Use of 'Rubber Ducks' (aka fake rifles) For ROTC Training

I don't really see why military organization belongs in an educational institution. But that aside, dismissing something as political correctness is stupid. Personally, ROTC using fake rifles to train would not bother me on my university campus.

    Thunderfoot > Ben Stein

    Thunderfoot > Ben Stein

To get back "on topic" as it were. Mr Pepper, by a curious coincidence, this article was just posted on New Scientist (a well known scientific news magazine): Evolution: 24 Myths and Misconceptions. You may find it interesting, I don't know. They also link to several other locations on the...

    Thunderfoot > Ben Stein

I would like to point out that reading the first page almost every statement is false, an opinion, or assumed. None of them are backed up at all. We are supposed to take their word for it? I could take it bit by bit, but really I don't feel like it. If you want to believe that evolution is...
