Company's old IT admin quit, they need someone to assess the network. Any tips?

If you're just trying to assess how bad things are, I would make the person that called you in log into the server(s). You don't want them calling the next day asking what you did to break what seems like a fragile network. I also think the first thing you'd want to find out is what is the...

Having used open source solutions such as pfsense, monowall, ipcop, etc, in the past (and still currently do)...I would suggest going with a solution that another network engineer could step in and work with, or your company could contact the manufacturer for support if you got hit buy a bus. I...

www.buchanan.org censored? DNS seems to fail for that site.

If you do a lookup on www.buchanan.org, the nameservers listed are ns1.prettyoblivion.com and ns2.prettyoblivion.com. If you do a lookup on those, you get "No DNS for this address". No conspiracy, just a DNS issue.

Cost for installing a patch panel?

Since they cable already exists, you might get a quote for time and materials rather than per run. If they are only punching down the existing cables, that's too much. If they are punching down the cables, fully testing them, and leaving you with a documented map, that's a different story.

    Firewall help? Anyone

Change the settings on your wireless router so that it acts only as an access point. Turn off DHCP on it as well. On the firewall, change the LAN segment to something like 192.168.2.0/24.

Need some help with Server 2k3 re: permissions

I would suggest setting up a domain as well, but you'd also have to tack on the time to upgrade the home users to pro, as XP home cannot join a domain.

This is embarassing, but Vista kinda new to me.

Taken from Jack's second link(Vista file sharing). Windows Vista by default does not allow simple file sharing. Access to shared folders, including the public folder (if shared), requires a user name and password. I'd suggest reading it to find out how to set it up correctly for your scenario.

    Server Quote - Fair price?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't there need to be a minimum of 4 drives for RAID 10? Whoever wrote the quote should actually read what they're quoting before copying and pasting from a website. You won't go wrong with HP or Dell.

Need help/opinions/ideas for a small business network upgrade (~25 computers)

The only two caveats of SBS2003 is that it does not support trusts between domains, and the SBS server must retain the FSMO roles. You can join additional domain controllers and member servers to a SBS domain.

I'd suggest getting a Linksys NSLU2, and then an external USB drive of your choice. The NSLU2 can be 'hacked' to run an iTunes server on it, and works really well. You can store all your other files on there as well and simply access it through a network share...

NetGEAR wireless gear -- has anyone had any trouble using them?

I purchased a Netgear RT311 YEARS ago and never experienced a problem with it. I have since upgraded to a Cisco SOHO 91 router which has preformed flawlessly as well. About a year ago i purchased the WG602 from Netgear under the pretense that it would be upgradable to WPA when the protocol was...

    Windows Server 2003, clients w/ 2 NIC's cant get internet now ...

Figure out if you can't resolve internet addresses or if you can't ping them. If it's a matter of being able to resolve domain names, it's probably because the clients are looking to the DC for name resolution as they should be in an AD domain.

Password expires on network share - how to change it?

It's not going to be easy if they're being 'unresponsive'...and are getting away with it. It might just boil down to having to call them once a month and resetting your password. I'd take it up with whomever you're consulting for, and find if they're a common ground that can be reached...

Password expires on network share - how to change it?

Since you never actually log into the domain, you will never be prompted to change your password. You're simply passing credentials to the authenticating server to map a drive...there is no 'prompt' that would ever ask you to change your password or warn you that it is going to expire. Find...

is NETGEAR 54Mbps Cable/DSL Wireless good stuff?

One thing to be aware of... If the product says it is upgradable to WPA, make sure that there is an existing firmware update that you can download before you purchase it. I bought a Netgear WG602 Wireless Access Point for the same reason, because they claimed it would support WPA in a future...
