Challenge: Cheap build. Custom, or go Dell/HP?

definately go with the Dell Vostro 200. My brother just got one... He ordered monday morning. It was due to ship the 24th. It arrived at his house on the 23!! He ordered an analog monitor.. but the monitor has DVI and it came with a DVI cable. He upgraded to a ATI HD3650, and can...

    VISTA network and internet connection

The "network setup wizard" pic you posted is NOT a network setup wizard. XP's is located in the control panel and allows you to change settings. Vista's is just a pretty button that does everything on it's own. And as far as ISP's loging devices... I am on that PC right now... I can...

    VISTA network and internet connection

elevated operations eh? Doesn't change my point. If hitting OK on a UAC is deemed secure, why can't clicking on *.exe be secure? Do I really think that some malicious hack/prog. inelligent enough to screw with my pc is going to be side tracked by a UAC? Come-on even I can run a script to...

    VISTA network and internet connection

First off, what is with all the popups? If clicking the OK button on a popup is proof that I want to perform an action, why the !@#$ wasn't it proof enough the first effing time I clicked? If the OK button is secure why can't the rest of the GUI options be secure? </rant> Ok, I am not...

    Vista DRT (Demo Readiness Toolkit)

I figure maybe I should try VISTA. <side note>I just fixed this laptop which spent a month or two in China, using a free always-on wifi connection WITH NO ANTIVIRUS. This dude's laptop was so screwed! The viruses had his cpu hitting 70-85% idle! I stopped counting at virus #13... AVG...

http://www23.tomshardware.com/...3&model2=882&chart=416 by the way, http://www.tomshardware.com/20...3/04/amd_780g_chipset/ http://www.anandtech.com/cpuch...howdoc.aspx?i=3258&p=1 this mobo has PASSIVE integrated AMD HD3200 graphics with DEDICATED 512 memory, plus the integrated graphics...

New build - 1 good beep but no video

Had the same thing happen to me before. Just had to flash the bios (needed support for g3 stepping or something). While none of this applies to you, 1...i concur that it is probably the motherboard 2...before you trash the mobo, try flashing the bios.

    Seems like random PC freezing

Have you checked your HD for bad sectors? I had a similar problem with not coming out of hibernation/sleep b/c of bad sectors on my HD. So, I backed up my data, Re-partitioned my HD around the bad sectors, And Re-installed my OS. As far as the POST problem, it could just be that your MBR is...

How to best partition for my uses?

True-dat ...... partitioning is something I am quite familiar with. This is what I reccomend: C: WindowsXP (for everyday use) -primary partition D: WindowsXP (clean install, for emergencies) -primary partition X: Data (storage, backups, etc..) -primary partition Y: Logical...

OK, What RAM to get for $100

any benefit from a 4x1gb setup would be imperceptible. But it would drain more juice from your psu and put more stress on your mobo, and leave no room for upgrading. 2x2gb is a no-bainer. because you don't have untied OC-ing wrt the FSB? Consider this...

    Should I upgrade my PC?

Totally, totally wrong. You're recommending a socket AM2 board, while he has 939. Not to mention that any current vidcard will do HD acceleration. yup you're right. Didn't even think. My bad.

    drive loses power after POST

Hmm... Sounds like a windows Driver issue, not a bios issue. I would suggest updating the drivers, but I am sure you have already done that. ..Sorry I couldn't help more

    printer ink levels

HMM... there website could be more helpfull. So according to the link it looks like your Printer has 6Cartridges? (this sounds absurd though I admit printers are not my thing) How many are actually inside your printer and which ones are you using? (51black, 23photo, etc..) as best as I...

Just installed new 24" LCD Monitor, screen goes black and sort of resets sometimes

UM ... have you checked to make sure the cords are all connected tight? If they are you may need to get a new DVI-d cable (I assume you are using a dvi-D connection?)

Server vs. NAS, which one do I need?

I agree with slow Learner. No need to buy a dedicated server though. Here is what you do: Network the existing PCs. Choose one of them to be the "server." (it can still serve as a workstation). Install 2 new HDs in Raid,1 and voila you now have a backup solution that is as fast as...

    Hard Drive problem

What were you using to reformat it? This makes a difference. Sometimes this makes a difference. Try making sure that the hard-drive is flagged as bootable, from within the formatting program. Try this. During the windows XP install process, after you have selected "choose where to install...

    drive loses power after POST

sounds like it could be a powersupply issue. Disconnect something else in your computer which requires electricity...video card, hard drive, etc. now see if you can use it. after the post. If not, I would just get rid of it. Flash RAM, is less expensive than floppy disks, i mean you can...

    Broken laptop

take it to your local tv repairman. They should be able to fix it for $30-45, unless the motherboard's pcb is broken

    Should I upgrade my PC?

ok, don't overclock your computer. Your AMD X2 should last another 2-3 years, for gaming. Your X1950 should be good for another 1-2 years. You aren't going to notice a huge performance increase by upgrading now, b/c your cpu is NOT bottlenecking your system. Think of it like this...

Still can't figure out why my games are freezing

Dude, It is waaay easier to just install everything from scratch (which the person who installed your MOBO did not do, most likely) after re-formatting your hard drive, than to do all this other stuff you have done. Here is the deal. (1) get out your MOBO (motherboard) manual, and find...

Can I connect IDE drive via Serial ATA connector?

Argo In my opinion, get a new sata HD. 80GB is old technology--currently WD, Samsung, and others ship HDs with 320GB per platter. (This will translate to just less than 4x the Read/Write transfer rate of the 80GB drive--much faster). If you don't want to spend $75.00+ consider the...
