What benefit does flashing to dd-wrt have?

boomerang's experience isn't typical, so don't get discouraged. My WRT54G v.4 was never as fast and stable as it is now with the Tomato Firmware. I wouldn't consider ever using an 3rd party firmware capable router with the stock firmware again.

want to share files with my neighbor

Honestly, If you both want simultaneous access of one specific Music folder, Hamachi is the easiest way to do it. With Dropbox, the files have to be uploaded to the web, which, if you think about it, is a useless step for what you want to do. If it was me, Hamachi would be my only option...

ultra vnc on mutiple computers on single network

After discovering LogMeIn, VNC is dead to me.. so to speak. Look into it, its so easy to manage multiple machines, and its web interface is incredibly well laid out. If i was on the same LAN, VNC might be a better option for the speed, but over the internet LogMeIn is almost a no brainer for its...

Networking solution to stream HD Video to Living Room?

Wireless just isn't going to be stable enough (even draft-n) for streaming full length films with absolutely no hiccups, there is just to many variables. I have the same x264 1080p encoded files and even with a dual band draft n router ill still occasionally have buffering issues. I say run a wire.

Wireless N routers and cards are worth the money...

So whats your "un"-absolute statement spidey, off the record? FWIW, smallnetbuilder.com's charts show the Apple Airport Extreme having the fastest average AND max downstream throughput of any wireless router they have tested, and that is in single AND dual band. The MAX they saw was 133Mbps...

Wireless N routers and cards are worth the money...

Question about home cable jacks and internet...

I suggest you find where the cable comes into the house and get familiar with how the splitting is done, and what run goes to what room. Get a good 2-way splitter, and connect it to the line running in, and to the 2 out ports connect the line running directly to the cable modem, and the other...

    Ipod/Safari Mobile Security Issue

If you're going to cut off access to an iPod.. then you might as well cut off access to every computer in the house. When it comes down to it, there just as vulnerable. You just happened to read a sensationalist artical targeting Safari.

    Ipod/Safari Mobile Security Issue

IMHO, you are being ridiculously paranoid. But like i said, thats IMHO. WPA encryption is enough, MAC filtering is just a unneeded headache, that isn't really worth it. If you where still using WEP, then maybe, but make you're like 10x easier and disable MAC filtering. Cutting off you're sons...

    10.5 iMac -> ARD -> 10.3 iBook, help!

Just for a bit of fun, I decided to set up my old iBook (dead display, turns out the mini-VGA port is dead to) into a network server of sorts. To do a fresh install of Panther (newest OS i could get my hands on) , I connected the iBook via FW to my Quicksilver 733 G4 and booted it into target...

Router keeps cutting out - WRT54G

Tomato or DD-WRT, im pretty sure you will be ok after that. I've bought 3 WRT54G's in the past (v2, v3.1, v6), and the first thing I did once unboxing them was install Tomato firmware. Never had a problem with any of them... ever.

intermittent wireless connection? No LAN connection

Its probably not a router issue, but just to be safe, update the firmware, or if you're up to date, just re-install it. The I would suggest possibly updating you're mobo's bios? Probably cant hurt.
  25. R

    Is DD-WRT reccomended?

If Tomato is available for Buffalo routers I suggest that over DD-WRT. DD-WRT is very flaky and I have had to reboot it many times in a row just to get the DHCP server to start handing out IP's. Tomato is ROCK SOLID and have never had any issues at all.

Well since its been almost 24 hours since you posted this, and no responses yet, ill take a jab at it. Im not certain but if you have any 11b or 11g devices connected to you're router, it might default to the speed of the slowest device. If all you're computers are 11n then try restricting...

    Help bridging two routers

Aright, im pretty sure that when in Bridge mode, the bridged router basically becomes invisible and acts like a wire connecting my iMac to ActionTec downstairs. I've been on these boards for all of a few days, and i have read many of you're great posts Jack, but don't you think that reliability also plays a part? The DIR-655 is absolutely rock solid. Had mine for 3 months like blacksheep and have never had to reset it. Never. I'm a heavy bittorrent...

    Wireless bridging question

Im no expert, but you might run into problems with two DHCP servers on the same LAN. Again, I only have a vague notion about how WDS works. Possibly have the router assign static IP's to the computers in its room?

You're welcome. Yes the Mini has optical audio out, and XBMC passes Dolby Digital and DTS out to you're receiver or pre/pro. Most of the time you can match you're displays resolution with OS X's built in display control panel, but if you run into troubles, SwitchResX will solve all you're...
