IE8 is shutting down after a fresh install

OK. Here's the deal. IE was shutting down on this system pretty often, but there were also a bunch of trojans on it. So I formatted the c drive, reinstalled xp pro, office pro, avira, ad-aware, spybot, and, spywareblaster. I left the D partition alone, where the user's docs are located...

Can u fix a computer that is getting a blue screen periodically w/o knowing the code?

OK. Thanks. Will try that. The HDD passed the short test. It's a WD. Have you ever had a HDD pass the short test but fail the long test? He also said to me that about 6 weeks ago, his automatic windows update only showed 1 update. And since then, it has only been one update that...

Can u fix a computer that is getting a blue screen periodically w/o knowing the code?

Thanks for the tips. I'll check them out. Here is the latest. The blue screen happened again, so he was able to get the error code: Stop error: 0x000000C5 (0x00000004, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x805yb917) It was very slow, so I did some cleaning of spyware. Ad-aware found 83 cookies...

Can u fix a computer that is getting a blue screen periodically w/o knowing the code?

A client of mine has gotten a blue screen two times in the past month (Dell desktop). He said with no warning, the screen goes black, and then comes up with the blue screen. He noticed that it said "ready to dump memory," but he didn't get the rest of what it said. He panicked and shut off the...

Problem with Avira AntiVir Rescue CD - Get "Finished Scanning" message immediately

I just downloaded the file to create the Avira AntiVir Rescue CD from Avira's website and made a rescue CD with it. I then booted up from that CD and ran a scan. Immediately after running the scan it said, "Finished Scanning" and had no log file. I tried both the "Scan all files" and "Smart...

Problems with TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen; quarantined it but now Run DLL errors

OK. Thanks. Did not run the online scan in safe mode. I used AntiVir (both by quarantining everything that came up and via the Rescue CD), SDFix, and MalwareBytes and it fixed everything. Thanks.

Problems with audio and video on a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop

Thanks. I installed the video drivers from Dell, but that did not help. Someone said that Flash video is CPU intensive and to try other browsers. I was using Firefox, I believe, but will try Opera and Chrome. Will also try installing the audio drivers from Dell.

Problems with audio and video on a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop

This system is quite old. So I am just refurbishing it and selling it at cost to someone who needs it. Here are the specs: Win2k Pro SP4 Dell Inspiron 7500 512MB RAM (maxed out; 2 X 256) 433Mhz CPU DirectX 7.0 (4.07.00.0700) [Not sure if this video card is compatible with 9.0c] Video...

Problems with TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen; quarantined it but now Run DLL errors

This system had the TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen Trojan on it. AntiVir kept on popping up with the threat constantly. I kept on hitting "Quarantine." Finally Antivir stopped coming up with it, but then I started getting a Run DLL error. It was asking for "dwdki32.dll". It says that it could not find the...

Popped in additional RAM chip; Now getting error

Well, I just found the problem. The RAM that I put in there from the old system is shot. When I ran MemTest86+, INSTANTLY there were tons of errors. And when I say tons, I mean it. It's been running for about 2.5 min so far, and it's already at 410,000 errors, and counting very rapidly. I...

Popped in additional RAM chip; Now getting error

I decided to add more RAM to it, as you were right. It can't even survive on 192MB with what is out today. So, I took a 256MB module from an IMB laptop (an older one) and popped it in and this is what I got: "The amount of system memory has been changed, or the suspend-to-disk file is...

Is this a RAM issue, video card, video drivers...?

It's a Dell Dimension 2400, and it's behaving very oddly. I reformatted the hard drive, installed XP Pro from a Dell CD that did not come with that computer (he didn't have his CD on him, so I borrowed it from his colleague since he was losing money with no computer; I assume it's just the OS...

    Did my laptop just die?

Thanks . I actually figured out what happened. I have an Antec AC Adapter that's adjustable in voltage. I guess that last time I pulled it out of my laptop bag, the lever that controls the voltage went from 15v to 24v. So, it was giving my laptop too much power. Good thing it didn't fry it...

    Did my laptop just die?

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1405-S171. It has always been reliable for me. Tonight, I turned it on, and then as it was booting up, I plugged in the A/C adapter into the jack on the computer while it was plugged into a UPS battery backup, like I have done many times before without issue (minus...

Word 2003 not printing verticle lines

I am working with this document that has two thin verticle lines on the left side of the page, and line numbers (numbers to the left of the line for each line in the doc) to the left of the lines that go down the page (it's a law doc). For some reason, when I print this doc with one computer...

She just unplugged it and plugged it in again and now everything is fine. Any idea what happened? Is it on its way out? Was it a glitch? Might it not have been plugged in to the computer all the way?

All data from external hard drive got deleted!

A client of mine lost all of her data on her external hard drive. It happened while she was away from the computer, and as far as I know, no one else touched her computer. I asked her if her computer were acting abnormally, like she had a virus or something, and she said, "No. It's acting...

Firefox keeps crashing; the screen was also going black, but fixed that

And I just "repaired" windows and am still getting a BSOD. It has the same stop error number as above (the second one that I mentioned), but the numbers inside the parentheses are a little bit different. Also, when the BSOD occurs, the CPU fan starts speeding up and it sounds like it's about...

Firefox keeps crashing; the screen was also going black, but fixed that

I created a new user and deleted the user account I was using (I was going to delete it anyway) to see if any of the user settings or files were causing it. No luck. Just got a blue screen error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Check new hardware, etc. STOP: 0x0000000A (0x001B0007...

Firefox keeps crashing; the screen was also going black, but fixed that

Not sure what the deal is, but Firefox keeps crashing on this system. It was also giving BSOD errors, and the screen was going black at times. I looked up the code on the BSOD error, and it said it was a bad video driver. So, I attempted to update it, but there was no update. However...

Can print a test page, but can't print from any application; fresh system

Thanks. The reason I mention the other items is that this system also just restarted on its own, and it's a fresh install. So, I'm dealing with other issues as well. It's a Canon S300. You're right. Some printers are picky about when you plug it in. I waited until it asked for it...

Can print a test page, but can't print from any application; fresh system

Tried both the driver from the CD and the latest driver. It will print the test page, just not from an application. Also, this is a fresh install of the OS, and it just restarted on its own, which is what it was doing before. Maybe a mobo issue? I checked to see if were overheating, and...

This system is a Toshiba Satellite A75 S211. It had some viruses and spyware on it, which I got rid of. It also had two burning software programs on there. I got rid of one and left the other. The DVD CD/RW drive on this is recognized by Windows, but will not read anything you put in it...

    BSOD even in safe mode

Can't get rid of this virus. Suggestions?

It was from the FedEx trojan. I did a search and found that only 7 out of 36 virus engines caught it. So, since Avast was not one of them, I uninstalled it and installed one that did catch it, AntiVir. Thanks. Just so you know, the contents of that directory was empty, and I was doing...
