2009 Subaru Legacy - is this a good deal?

There's a 2009 Legacy with about 34,000 miles on it selling for $14,000. The catch is that it's a former rental car and it has a bunch of scratches on the paint. The hood has some vertical scratches, the top of the trunk has a ding with some paint missing and a few shallow dents, and the front...

    Garage floor coating

Hey guys. So I want to make my garage look nice and the first thing I want to do something about is the floor. I was considering getting one of those DIY kits but after a little more reading I realized that to do it right would be more involved than I expected (grinding the floor, etc). You...

My credit card number was stolen

Chase contacted me saying there were possible fraudulent charges on my card. They were all online charges. One was for a song on iTunes, something else for $2, and another charge for $60. It seems like they started with the smaller charges first to check if it worked and then went for the...

Want to tint my windows but keep it legal

I have a Mark V Jetta that is platinum grey metallic (dark grey) which I think would look nice with tinted windows. The windows are factory tinted slightly green but I don't know how much exactly. I live in New York so legally the front and rear side windows must have 70% light transmittance...

    I discovered something amazing

Here's a link that explains it: http://www.linquist.net/motorsports/tech/mirrors/ The idea is that the rear view mirror is to see things behind you and the side mirrors are to see cars in your left and right blind spots instead of also being redundantly focused behind you. It makes it SO...

Gas mileage improved after first oil change

I recently had the first oil change done on my 08 Jetta Wolfsburg at 5000 miles (synthetic). I keep track of my mileage for kicks with fuelfrog.com. I used to get about 22 mpg in mostly city driving and the latest three tanks have been 23.9, 23.8, and 24.4. Just thought I'd share.

What do you use your netbook for?

I have a desktop as my main PC at home and a 14" laptop. I've never really felt motivated to bring the laptop to class or to a restaurant/coffee shop. I just don't see the need to be online in situations like that. I want to get a notebook partially out of gadget lust, but I also could see...

    DVD Flick question

I'm making a DVD of some TV episodes in AVI format. If the video and audio bitrate are set to auto, does that mean the quality will continually get worse as more video is added? Is there a rule of thumb for how many hours of video can be put on one DVD while keeping the quality decent? The...

Which grade of premium fuel for a turbocharged car?

I know that for cars that don't have turbocharged or high compression engines, premium gas gives no benefit. However, if the engine is turbocharged, and the manual says to use gas with an octane rating between 91 and 96, should I go for the highest octane rating available in that range? So...

Disc brakes squealing on 2008 Jetta

My Jetta has disc brakes on all four wheels. When I first start driving I can hear the brakes squeal. It seems like as I keep using them on a single drive the squeal will eventually disappear. Is it possible the squealing is due to the brakes not being warmed up enough?
