    Quality/Longevity concerns regarding ATi

Before I knew any adequate amount about computers I got a crappy ati on black friday that failed, then a crappy nvidia that failed. This has no real significance. Now I have a 3870, going strong for about a year now.

    How do I rip DVDs?

I have a couple of movies I'd like to put on my HD. I know it's possible, anand's written articles on it. How do I do it, and what's the necessary software? Is there freeware that does this? Thanks in advance.

FSX pegged at 16FPS, GPU stuck at 70%

Ok, I'm checking the situation out again, and the proc isn't even pegged. It's hovering around 70% max, and sometimes it looks like it's only consistently utilizing one core at about 50%. Also, turning off filtering and AA bumps the FPS up to 28. What gives?

FSX pegged at 16FPS, GPU stuck at 70%

Ok, thanks guys. Guess this is one of the only games that gets bottlenecked by the 6750. On a related note, last night I saw a phenom with 8Gb of RAM and a 3200 run FSX just fine on all high settings at best buy. Go figure...

FSX pegged at 16FPS, GPU stuck at 70%

FSX is stuck at about 16fps for me, and a look at CCC tells me that the GPUs isn't going over 70% utilization much, if at all. I've heard that this game is very bus intense, so is PCIE v1 limiting me here? specs: C2D conroe @ 3.2Ghz P35 3870 Anyone else have a similar setup that they...

What's with nehalem pads on top of the chip?

    1. Well, wouldn't that require screwing with the IHS? You'd have to lap and then re etch. Seems pretty impractical. I don't follow.

What's with nehalem pads on top of the chip?

On nehalem there's a couple of pads around the IHS. Based on pics I've seen, they don't seem to be making contact with any pin on the locking device. Are these the Vcc pads supplied from the locking device, or are they there just for show?

Thank you, silentrunning. bsobel: It was extremely disorienting when I first switched to vista, and I prefer shutting down over sleeping.

    The off button?

I just read the article on the graphics testing platform and was pleasantly suprised to find out that the sleep button in vista can be changed to being the off button, as logic (and the icon) would suggest. How is this done? Thanks in advance.

    Help-A-Noob with his first build

I agree with the previous posts. However, I would go with a P45. From what I know, P43s are binned versions of the P45s, and logically should be worse at OCing. Personally, I'd put money into a better PSU. The earthwatts isn't really shoddy, but I'd still get a solid PSU. I'd go with the...

    Nehalem Review

The marked die shot looks messed up to me: 1. The L2 is arranged in between blocks of L3? WTH? That doesn't look right. I found another version saying it's write buffers with the L2 in the core rectangle, but still, it looks a bit screwed up. 2. Obviously, it's 3 channel DDR3.

    Good CD ripper?

Itunes 8 apparently can't rip in non mp3 192kbps formats anymore. I'm pissed. I like all of my music in aiff (any lossless, for that matter, but wav doesn't support as much metadata). So, is there any option out there that rips in multiple formats, has good codecs, and will download metadata...

    E6750 @ 3.2Ghz - Need Advice

Wow, you have pretty good luck. I need 1.3125v to do the exact same thing. Mine runs about 30C with speedstep at idle in central illinois in this cold weather. P95 can push it up past 45C, which is no problem at all. In warmer weather it idled around 37, which isn't bad either. If you get...

    Good ensemble/orchestra/classical music

Concerto for orchestra by bartok, especially the 5th movement, but all the other ones are also good. Symphony no. 4 by brahms is also really good, movements 1 and 2 more so. Hopes this helps, although my taste may not be at all similar to yours.

    Some kind of weight system?

Yeah, but we had borrowed weights from the gym, and welding together a few metal bars together to put them on wasn't too hard. Would this be more cost effective? (That's the main question, along with scalability if the gym runs out of weights). I appreciate the help anyways. The arm is an...

    Some kind of weight system?

Well, previously, we used gym weights and that worked pretty good. Would it be pretty cheap to build a giant bucket? It'll be swinging around, and we don't want it to be slopping all over the place. Of course, if we had the means/sheer will to get DU, we'd probably go for DU.

    Some kind of weight system?

We need a weight system for a trebuchet. Last time we tried it, we used bench press weights from the Y, and that scaled up to about 1200 pounds. We have a pretty small budget, so what can we get that will scale up further to 1500-200 pounds? We don't have the budget to get a ton of lead or DU...

    Running 800 x 600 on widescreen

In CCC you can set centered timings, which will keep everything at the same resolution in a box in the center, or you can blow it up at the same aspect ratio. I dunno what nvidia/intel graphics do.

    ATI AA options?

Put simply, what do all the anti aliasing options in CCC mean? The slider only goes from 2x to 8x, but the filter enables it to go up to 24x. What do box, narrow tent, wide tent, and edge detect mean? And what's temporal AA? Thanks in advance.

    SyncMaster 22" vs 24" battle

Well, I have a syncmaster 226bw (which is a 22 in) and it looks fine. I don't know if it's a TN or not, but it works perfectly, no defects, and I don't notice any viewing angle issues. Black level isn't a real issue for me.

_____With flash so cheap and features getting piled on, why not..._____

That would make a good swap drive, except: 1. People who buy those boards are very likely to blow money on tons of memory. 2. Flash doesn't last all that long, and is unsuitable for a swap file.

    Defragging on SSDs?

Since there's virtually no access time on SSDs, doesn't that make defragging redundant? Also, wouldn't the limited lifespan of SSDs make an even greater disincentive against defragging?

Tank vs. the Great Wall of China

Well, (assuming rebuilt sections) it's a pretty thick wall on top of a hill. The thing's multistory tall dirt/rock pile that's 2 car lanes wide. You're telling me a few DU shells will blow that up? Sure, it'll cause some serious damage, but it probably won't blow a hole big enough to drive through.
